Battle of Hogwarts: Encyclopedia II - Neville Longbottom - Neville in Half-Blood Prince

In Book 6, we first see Neville on the Hogwarts Express, where as it turns out, his grandmother, who he feared would be angry about the battle in the Department of Mysteries was actually quite pleased. Neville was also pleased to show his new wand, one made of Cherry and Unicorn hair, which was apparently one of the last ones Mr. Ollivander sold before he disappeared. Neville was invited to Horace Slughorn's party on the train, along with Harry and Ginny, because of his parents, where it ...

Rodolphus and Rabastan Lestrange are a pair of Death Eaters. They are brothers, and Rodolphus is married to Bellatrix Lestrange. Alongside Bellatrix and Barty Crouch Jr., the two brothers aided in the torture of Frank and Alice Longbottom, driving both of them into insanity. All three Lestranges were formerly imprisoned in Azkaban until their escape, along with several other Death Eaters. Battle of Hogwarts: Encyclopedia II - Minor Dark wizards in Harry Potter - Augustus Rookwood

Augustus Rookwood was a spy in the Department of Mysteries during Voldemort's first rise to power. Igor Karkaroff named Rookwood during his own trial, and Rookwood was sent to Azkaban but escaped in the mass breakout of January 1996. Rookwood fought in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries. The character is described as having a pockmarked face in one of Harry's visions. He is currently in Azkaban prison. ...

Battle of Hogwarts: Encyclopedia II - Minor Dark wizards in Harry Potter - Evan Rosier

Evan Rosier was killed by Aurors, shortly after Igor Karkaroff's capture, while resisting arrest, taking a big chunk out of Mad-Eye Moody's nose in the process. According to Sirius Black Rosier was one of Severus Snape's Gang of Slytherins. Evan is Greek and means "of noble birth," appropriate for a typical Death Eater with pure-blood prejudices. Rosier is the name of a fallen angel (formerly holding the rank of Dominion in the angelic hierarchy). This demon may appear as either a man or a woman, and is a kind of patron devil o ...

Battle of Hogwarts: Encyclopedia II - Ron Weasley - Ron in the Films

As of 2005, Rupert Grint plays Ron in the four released Harry Potter films. Though Ron is a humorous character in the books, in the films his role seems primarily geared towards providing comic relief, more so than it is in the novels. This is especially evident in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, which features Ron as an archetypical sidekick. In the third film, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Ron is even more so the sidekick. In the original novel, Ron's role was fairly small, but the film crea ...

Battle of Hogwarts: Encyclopedia II - Minor Dark wizards in Harry Potter - Grindelwald

Grindelwald (pronounced Grindelvald) was a Dark wizard before Lord Voldemort and his only mention is in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone on Albus Dumbledore's Chocolate Frog card which notes that Dumbledore defeated Grindelwald in 1945. It has been speculated that, since 1945 saw the end of World War II, there may be a connection between Grindelwald and Adolf Hitler and so it is possible that Grindelwald was head of the magical wing of the Third Reich, or even that Adolf Hitler was acting under the Imperiu ...

Battle of Hogwarts: Encyclopedia II - Minor Dark wizards in Harry Potter - Avery

Avery has known Voldemort since Hogwarts. He was also a Death Eater during Voldemort's first reign of terror, but avoided being brought to justice by saying he was acting under the Imperius Curse. After he rose again, Voldemort punished Avery with the Cruciatus Curse for his disloyalty. It is possible that there may be two Death Eaters named Avery--one may be the other's father. Sirius Black mentions that an Avery was in Hogwarts at the same time as Snape, and there was also one ...

Battle of Hogwarts: Encyclopedia II - Neville Longbottom - Personality and development

Neville's lack of self-confidence has affected his abilities as a wizard-in-training; despite being pure-blooded, Neville shows an ineptitude with magic that often gets him into trouble. But he also shows great strength and potential, being able to whiz the Charms teacher, Professor Flitwick, around the classroom, yet he lacks focus. His use of his father's wand may also be a factor, since magic wands in the Harry Potter series must "choose the wizard" - not the other way around. Nonetheless, he has stood up both to his friends (notably in < ...

Battle of Hogwarts: Encyclopedia II - Minor Dark wizards in Harry Potter - Alecto and Amycus

Alecto and Amycus are siblings (sister and brother, respectively) who participated in the assault on Hogwarts school. Amycus is described as being squat and lumpy-looking, with a lopsided leer and a wheezy giggle. They are most likely the Carrows mentioned by Snape in the second chapter. Amycus is a hero in Greek mythology. Alecto is one of the Erinyes, the Greek godesses of revenge. ...

Battle of Hogwarts: Encyclopedia II - Severus Snape - The Half-Blood Prince

In the sixth book in the series, Snape is given the Defence Against the Dark Arts teaching job, and is replaced as Potions Master by Horace Slughorn, who returns out of retirement. Slughorn taught Potions for many years before Snape. Harry is lent an old Potions textbook from the Potions storeroom, which turns out to be filled with the jottings of a highly talented former student. The additional notes include a variety of hexes and jinxes seemingly invented by the student, as well as substantial improvements to the book's standard potion-mak ...

Battle of Hogwarts: Encyclopedia II - Severus Snape - Background

Severus Snape was born to Tobias Snape, a Muggle, and Eileen Prince, a witch. Details of his early life are incomplete, but Harry comes to suspect that Snape suffered neglect by his parents and may have been abused by his father. He comes to these conclusions through his botched lessons in Occlumency. He learns that Snape was extremely unpopular and lonely in his teens, resulting from, or perhaps fueling, his interest in the Dark Arts. [HP5] The youthful Snape was described as having a "stringy, pallid look," being "round-shouldered yet angular," and having a "twitchy" walk "like a spider" and ...

Battle of Hogwarts: Encyclopedia II - Severus Snape - Loyalty

The question of Snape's ultimate loyalty is one of the most significant unresolved issues in the Harry Potter series. Apparently, both the followers and opponents of Voldemort think Snape is working as a double agent against the other, and it is unclear where his loyalties actually lie. According to Divination Professor Sybill Trelawney, Snape was eavesdropping at her door at the Hog's Head during her interview with Dumbledore for the teaching job at Hogwarts . During that interview she fell into a trance, and delivered the key prophe ...
