Basic: Encyclopedia II - Visual Basic - Controversy

Visual Basic is a controversial language; many programmers have strong feelings regarding the quality of Visual Basic and its ability to compete with newer languages like Python. It was designed to be a simple language. In the interest of convenience and rapid development, some features like compile time type-checking and variable declaration are turned off by default. This leads to some programmers praising Visual Basic for how simple it is to use, but also can lead to frustration when programmers encounter problems that the features would have detected (e.g., a typo genera ...

Basic: Encyclopedia II - Food Basics - Food Basics USA

In 2001, A&P brought the Food Basics concept to the United States, changing a Passaic, New Jersey store from an A&P to a Food Basics. A&P was pleased with the results, and announced later that year that one of their flagship stores, the Paterson, New Jersey store, would close that November and begin the process of switching over to a Food Basics. Shortly after that, A&P decided to concentrate most of its business in its larger stores, and began to convert most of its smaller stores to Food Basics stores. Today, A&P operates 11 Food Basics stores in New Jersey, New Yor ...

Basic: Encyclopedia II - Tiny BASIC - Tiny BASIC grammar

The grammar is listed below in Backus-Naur form. In the listing, an asterisk ("*") denotes zero or more of the object to its left — except for the first asterisk in the definition of "term", which is the multiplication operator; parentheses group objects; and an epsilon ("ε") signifies the empty set. As is common in computer language grammar notation, the vertical bar ("|") distinguishes alternatives, as does their being listed on separate lines. The symbol "CR" denotes a carriage return (usually gene ...

Basic: Encyclopedia II - Basic taste - Umami

Savoriness or umami is the name for the taste sensation produced by the free glutamates commonly found in fermented and aged foods, for example parmesan and roquefort cheeses, as well as soy sauce and fish sauce. It is also found in significant amounts in various unfermented foods such as walnuts, grapes, broccoli, tomatoes, and mushrooms, and to a lesser degree in meat. The glutamate taste sensation is most intense in combination with sodium. This is one reason why tomatoes exhibit a stronger taste after adding salt. Sauces with umami and s ...

Basic: Encyclopedia II - Basic taste - Sourness

Sourness is the taste that detects acids. The mechanism for detecting sour taste is similar to that which detects salt taste. Hydrogen ion channels detect the concentration of hydronium ions (H3O+ ions) that have dissociated from an acid. Hydrogen ions are capable of permiating the amiloride-sensitive sodium channels, but this is not the only mechanism involved in detecting the quality of sourness. Hydrogen ions also inhibit the potassium channel, which normally functions to hyperpolarize the cell. Thus, by a com ...

Basic: Encyclopedia II - Basic taste - History

Five tastes are known to be sensed by taste buds: bitter, salty, sour, sweet, and umami. Until recently, most Western sources listed only the first four; in recent years, the fifth taste—umami (savoriness)—has become widely accepted. The most familiar example of an "umami" taste is that of the common food additive MSG. The Chinese also recognize 'pungent' as a sixth flavour. Some argue that spicy should also be included here as a different type of taste. Conflicting opinions exist and there are no reliabl ...

Basic: Encyclopedia II - Basic taste - Sweetness

Main article: Sweetness Sweetness is produced by the presence of sugars, some proteins and a few other substances. Sweetness is detected by a variety of G protein coupled receptors coupled to the G protein gustducin found on the taste buds. At least two different variants of the "sweetness receptors" need to be activated for the brain to register sweetness. The compounds which the brain senses as sweet are thus compounds that can bind with varying bond strength to several different sweetness receptors. The differences between t ...

Basic: Encyclopedia II - Atari BASIC - Description

Atari BASIC - String handling. ATARI BASIC differs from Microsoft-style BASICs primarily in the way it handles strings — it actually doesn't have any. Instead it used the Data General-like system of using character arrays, similar to the way the C programming language constructs strings. While this is in theory much faster than MS's solution, it was also much harder to port BASIC programs to the machine. Worse yet, arrays in ATARI BASIC were single-dimensional only, meaning that if a program used arrays of strings it essentially had ...

Basic: Encyclopedia II - Basic taste - Bitterness

Bitterness, like sweetness, is sensed by G protein coupled receptors coupled to the G protein gustducin. Many people find bitter tastes to be unpleasant; many alkaloids taste bitter, and evolutionary biologists have suggested that a distaste for bitter things evolved to enable people to avoid food poisoning. The bitterest substance known is the synthetic chemical denatonium (e.g., under the trademark Bitrex [1]), discovered in 1958. Denatonium benzoate is a white, odourless solid used as an aversive agent, i.e., an additive that prevents accidental ingestion of a toxic substance by huma ...

Basic: Encyclopedia II - Basic Instinct - Controversy

Basic Instinct - Portrayal of homosexuals. The film was controversial due to its overt sexuality and graphic violence -- a characteristic found in many of Verhoeven's movies -- and was protested by gay rights activists who felt that the film followed a pattern of negative depiction of gay and lesbian people in the film industry. It has also received criticism from those who feel it portrays bisexuals as insatiable, untrustworthy, and homicidal. < ...

Basic: Encyclopedia II - Atari BASIC - Background

The machines that would become the 8-bit family had originally been developed as a 2nd generation games console intended to replace the Atari 2600. During development in the late 1970s the home computer market "took off", and management realized they could sell the machine at a considerably higher price point if it were re-purposed for that market. This left them with the need for a BASIC system, at that time considered an ab ...

Basic: Encyclopedia II - Tiny BASIC - History

The language was first developed solely as a standards document, written primarily by Dennis Allison, a member of the Computer Science faculty at Stanford University. He was urged to create the standard by Bob Albrecht of the Homebrew Computer Club. He had seen BASIC on minicomputers and felt it would be the perfect match for new machines like the MITS Altair 8800, which had been released in January 1975. Bob and Dennis published the design document in the newsletter of the People's Computer Company. In December 1975, Dick Whipple and ...

It is now discontinued from its developers, but still available from Idigicon. Recognition of Blitz Basic 2D was boosted dramatically when a limited range of "free" versions were distributed on popular UK computer magazines such as PC Format. ...

Although the first version of STOS to be released in the UK (version 2.3) was released in late 1988 by Mandarin Software, an earlier version had been released earlier in France. Version 2.3 was bundled with three complete games (Orbit, Zoltar and Bullet Train), and many accessories and utilities (such as sprite and music editors).
