Barbara Bain: Encyclopedia II - Get Smart - Stars

The series starred Don Adams as bumbling secret agent Maxwell Smart, Agent 86. Barbara Feldon's character (Agent 99) had no name; even after Smart married her, he (and everyone else) would always address her as "99". (In one episode she said that her name was "Susan Hilton" but she later claimed that it was an alias [1].) Smart and 99 worked for CONTROL, a secret U.S. Government spy agency. Together, the pair investigated and opposed various threats to the world while Smart's bumbling caused complications. However, at each story's cli ...

Barbara Bain: 1999: Encyclopedia II - Space: 1999 - The Rise and Fall Of Series 2

The second season was, putting it mildly, problematic. Following the departure of Sylvia Anderson following her separation and subsequent divorce from husband Gerry, Fred Freiberger was brought in to help guide the series as producer. Freiberger was best known (and, to a vast majority of fans, infamous) for producing the critically derided third season of Star Trek, as well as producing the first few seasons of The Wild Wild West before being dismissed from the series due to creative differences. By Anderson's own accounts, and those ...

Barbara Bain: 1999: Encyclopedia II - Space: 1999 - Series Flaws and Criticisms

One of the major criticisms of the show was its scientific accuracy. Generally the writers seemed to have very little understanding of astronomy, which might arguably be useful for a series set in space. (Isaac Asimov was quick to point out that any explosion capable of knocking the Moon out of its orbit would actually blow it apart, and probably send billions of tons of debris crashing down onto Earth as well. Harlan Ellison was also equally quick to point out that any explosion on the far side of the moon capable of knocking it out of its orbit would not send it hurtlin ...

Barbara Bain: Encyclopedia II - Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In - Cast comings and goings

The show was #1 in the ratings for the 1968–69 and '69–70 seasons. At the end of '68–69, Judy Carne chose not to renew her contract as she wanted to pursue other projects, though she did make occasional appearances during '69–70; producer George Schlatter blamed her for breaking up the "family." The show also survived the departures of Goldie Hawn, and Jo Anne Worley to remain a top-20 show in '70–71. New faces in the 1970–71 season (joining Tomlin, who first appeared late in the previous season) included tap dancer Barbara Sharm ...

Barbara Bain: Encyclopedia II - Gilligan's Island - Cast

Gilligan (aka Willie Gilligan), of the show's title, was the hapless first mate of the S.S. Minnow. Other characters are the Skipper (referred to as Jonas Grumby in the first broadcast episode), the Professor (referred to twice as Roy Hinkley), millionaire Thurston J. Howell III and his wife Eunice, nicknamed Lovey, movie star Ginger Grant, and Kansas farm girl Mary Ann Summers. As the character of Ginger Grant, actress Tina Louise created a version of the quintessential Hollywoo ...

Barbara Bain: Encyclopedia II - Gilligan's Island - Gilligan's first name

Gilligan's full name has been a subject of debate among fans of the series for decades, a debate resolved by the release of Gilligan's Island - The Complete First Season DVDs in 2004. The DVD includes a documentary called 'Before the Three Hour Tour" which confirms that Gilligan's full name is Willy Gilligan, though this name was never used on the show. This is the same name that Bob Denver mentioned on a talk show. Gilligan's Island - Suggested alternatives. In the "Slave Girl" episode of the ...

Barbara Bain: Encyclopedia II - Gilligan's Island - Lyrics

(During opening credits:) Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale, a tale of a fateful trip. That started from this tropic port, aboard this tiny ship. The mate was a mighty sailin' man, the skipper brave and sure. Five passengers set sail that day, for a three hour tour (a three hour tour). The weather started getting rough, the tiny ship was tossed. If not for the courage of the fearless crew, the Minnow ...

Barbara Bain: 1999: Encyclopedia II - Space: 1999 - Concepts And Plot Points

The concept of travelling through space encountering aliens and strange worlds is similar to Star Trek and Lost In Space, although the crew were obviously more influenced by 2001: A Space Odyssey (except in terms of scientific accuracy). The latter, in fact, was dictated by the Andersons and series financer Lew Grade, which explained the series' look-and-feel of the Stanley Kubrick classic. Th ...

Barbara Bain: 1999: Encyclopedia II - Space: 1999 - The Basic Plot

The show involved the plight of the inhabitants of Moonbase Alpha following a calamity on September 13, 1999. When a huge nuclear waste dump on the far side of the Moon detonates in a massive series of nuclear explosions, it sends the Moon hurtling out of Earth's orbit and into deep space at colossal speed. The Moon in effect becomes the "spaceship" on which our heroes travel, looking for a new home. A "space warp" conveniently serves to explain how it is the Alphans manage to meet so many alien civilizations instead of spending most of their time driftin ...

CONTROL and KAOS didn't seem to be above everyday bureaucracy. KAOS is a Delaware corporation for tax purposes. The Guild of Surviving Control Agents is the union at CONTROL, and Max is their negotiator; he learns from a dying KAOS agent about all the benefits that KAOS agents have for their families as beneficiaries with the Chief in their presence and Max uses that information for his labor talks there and then. Barbara Bain: Encyclopedia II - Gilligan's Island - Pilot vs. first broadcast episode

The first episode broadcast is often wrongly referred to as the series' pilot. This episode begins with the characters on the beach, immediately after they were shipwrecked, listening to a radio news report about their disappearance. This is the scene which reveals that the Skipper's name is Jonas Grumby and the Professor's name is Roy Hinkley. In fact, there was an entirely different episode from this one that actually served as the show's pilot. That episode dealt more with the characters' background and how they came to be shipwrec ...
