WITCHES LEAGUE OF PUBLIC AWARENESS (WLPA): An international organization founded in 1986 by Laurie Cabot and Christine Dumas to protest the filming of John Updike’s novel, The Witches of Eastwick, a gross misrepresentation of the Craft. Awareness: Encyclopedia II - Open Government Information Awareness - Technology

The Open Government Information Awareness suite of software tools acts as a framework for US citizens to construct and analyze a comprehensive database on our government. Modeled on recent government programs designed to consolidate information on individuals into massive databases, our system does the opposite, allowing you to scrutinize those in government. Citizens are able to explore data, track events, find patterns, and build risk profiles, all in an effort to encourage and motivate action. We like to think of it as a Citizen’s Intelligence Agency, giving peop ...

Awareness: Encyclopedia II - Bolo self-aware tank - Artificial Intelligence

Each Bolo contains several computer "cores" with different functions, each of which contains multiple fully functional duplicates in case of failure. If a Bolo's logic becomes dysfunctional enough, it regresses to the original Resartus protocol, which was embedded in all following models just for such a case. Many Bolo stories are told from the point of the view of the Bolo itself, with its internal thoughts printed in italics throughout the text. ...

Awareness: Encyclopedia II - Bolo self-aware tank - Description and History

Bolos are tracked armoured vehicles similar to the tanks of 20th century Earth, but differ in that they are much larger, far more powerful, heavily armed self-aware artificial intelligences. They were originally developed in the late 20th/early 21st century by the Bolo Division of General Motors in the United States. As humanity spread beyond Earth, the Bolos followed to protect the Empire, and later the Concordiat. For millennia they provided the bulwark of humanity's defense, participating in numerous wars against various aliens, most nota ...

Awareness: Encyclopedia II - Open Government Information Awareness - Context

In the United States, there is a widening gap between a citizen's ability to monitor his or her government and the government's ability to monitor a citizen. Average citizens have limited access to important government records, while available information is often illegible. Meanwhile, the government's eagerness and means to oversee a citizen's personal activity is rapidly increasing. As the government broadens internal surveillance, and collaborates with private institutions to access data on the public, it is crucial that we maintai ...

The complex armor of a Bolo Unit of the Line can withstand direct hits from all weapons systems up to (and in later models, including) nuclear weapons. Hulls are built of either durachrome, or the stronger endurachrome, with a drivetrain made out of flintsteel. Later Marks were also protected by energized battlescreens, both external and internal. Each unit is also equipped with an impressive array of sensing equipment for all light conditions, IR, magnetic spectrum, and FTL comm. Units also came equipped with stealthy flying drones a ...

Awareness: Encyclopedia II - Bolo self-aware tank - Bolo Offensive Systems

A basic Bolo is roughly the equivalent in firepower to a division of heavy infantry with artillery support. Later Bolo models are classified as Continental Siege Units, and the Mark XXX and above could usually take on an entire planet's defenders by themselves. The main weapon of early Bolo Marks was either a regular tank gun or a railgun. As Mankind moved off-planet and the Bolo designs became bigger and more powerful, these were replaced by the Hellbore, a complex plasma weapon mounted centrally on top of the superstructure in one o ...

Awareness: Encyclopedia II - Information Awareness Office - Public protests against the Information Awareness Office

Extensive criticism of the IAO in the traditional media and on the Internet has come from both left-wing and right-wing civil libertarians, who see the unprecedented systematic categorization and access to information that it will enable as a grave threat to individual liberties, and another step farther down the slippery slope to a totalitarian state. On November 27, 2002, San Francisco Weekly columnist Matt Smith decided to illustrate the perils of information proliferation to John Poindexter personally by publishing a column contai ...

Awareness: Encyclopedia II - Tornado - Awareness and safety

With each tornado season, schools and media outlets in tornado-prone areas spend time educating the public about the dangers and what can be done to improve the chances of surviving a storm. In the United States, citizens are often advised to purchase NOAA Weather Radios. They are relatively inexpensive devices costing as little as $20 in U.S. currency, which will activate whenever the National Weather Service issues severe weather warnings. Warnings are also carried on radio and television, and most communities have civil defense sirens that will activate wh ...

Awareness: Encyclopedia II - Element Skateboards - Elemental Awareness

Elemental Awarness is an organization designed to promote wilderness conservation and survival skills to young people through skateboarding. The program was started by Mike Kershnar and Todd Larson. The idea of the program is to promote enviromental values to kids in a way that will get them interested and enthusiastic, which for many is through skateboarding. Another goal of EA is to promote skateboarding, since it is a much healthier hobby than drugs or crime, which many of these kids would otherwise be involved with. They do this by providing scholarships to skate camps, taking kids to professional skating ...

Awareness: Encyclopedia II - Delirium - Abnormalities of awareness and affect

Hallucinations (perceived sensory experience with the lack of an external source) or distortions of reality may occur in delirium. Commonly these are visual distortions, and can take the form of masses of small crawling creatures (particularly common in delirium tremens, caused by severe alcohol withdrawal) or distortions in size or intensity of the surrounding environment. Strange beliefs may also be held during a delirious state, but these are not considered delusions in the clinical sense as they are considered too short lived. Int ...

Awareness: Encyclopedia II - Fertility awareness - Breastfeeding Infertility

The Lactational Amenorrhea Method (LAM) of contraception makes use of the natural infertility which occurs through breastfeeding. It is 98% effective during the first six months postpartum for women who meet the criteria: Breastfeeding must be the infant’s only (or almost only) source of nutrition. Feeding formula, pumping instead of breastfeeding, and feeding solids all reduce the effectiveness of LAM. The infant must breastfeed at least every four hours during the day and at least every six hours at night.See also:

Awareness: Encyclopedia II - Cetacean intelligence - Self-awareness

The ability to possess self-awareness shows highly-developed, abstract thinking. Self-awareness is the precursor to more advanced processes like meta-cognitive reasoning (thinking about thinking) that are typical of humans. Scientific research into self-awareness has suggested that Bottlenose Dolphins possess self-awareness. Dolphins differ markedly so an assessment can not be made for all species, some of which have much ...

Awareness: Encyclopedia II - Stolen Generation - History of public awareness

Awareness of the Stolen Generation, and the practices which created it, only began to enter the public arena in the late 1980s through the efforts of Aboriginal activists, artists and musicians. The extensive public interest in the Mabo case had the side effect of throwing the media spotlight on all issues related to Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders in Australia, and most notably the Stolen Generation. In 1992, as media attention and public interest began to mount, the Prime Minister, Paul Keating made the first formal acknowled ...
