Video art, is a subset of artistic works which relies on "moving pictures" and is comprised of video and/or audio data. ((It should not however be confused with Television or Experimental Cinema) The precise medium of storing this data is variable and at the discretion of the artist; the medium of storage is usually magnetic video tape although the data may also be stored as a computer file (or files) on a Hard Disk, CD-ROM, DVD, solid state, indeed any electronic storage format. However, despite obvious ...

avant garde: Encyclopedia - Æon Flux

Æon Flux is an avant garde animated science fiction television series that aired on MTV. It premiered in 1991 on MTV's Liquid Television experimental animation show as a six-part serial of short films, followed in 1992 by five individual short episodes. In 1995 a season of ten half-hour episodes aired as a stand-alone series. Some viewers prefer the Liquid Television serials to the show for their lack of dialogue and narration, which greatly heightened the story's mystery. Others enjoy the later episodes for the bizarre themes fleshed o ...

avant garde: Encyclopedia - Bengal school of art

The Bengal School of Art was an influential style of art that flourished in India during the British Raj in the early 20th century. It was associated with Indian nationalism, but was also promoted and supported by many British arts administrators. The Bengal school arose as an avant garde and nationalist movement reacting against the academic art styles previously promoted in India, both by Indian artists such as Ravi Varma and in British art schools. Following the widespead influence of Indian spiritual ideas in the West, the ...

avant garde: Encyclopedia II - 2005 in British music - Summary

The first number one of the year, displacing Band Aid 20's "Do They Know It's Christmas?", was Steve Brookstein with his cover version of Phil Collins' "Against All Odds". To celebrate the 70th anniversary of his birth, one of Elvis Presley's eighteen Number One singles was released each week from January until May. The first, "Jailhouse Rock", entered at Number One in early January. The second, "One Night", was the 1000th number one single in the UK charts, and also set the record for being the lowest-selling weekly sale ever to reac ...

avant garde: Encyclopedia II - L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E poets - Early history of language poetry

The seed of language poetry was the launch of This magazine, edited by Robert Grenier and Barrett Watten in 1971. In an essay in the first issue, Grenier declared "I HATE SPEECH." This statement, qualified by the essay in which it occurred, along with a questioning attitude to the referentiality of language evidenced even in the magazine's title, served as a rallying cry for a number of young U.S. poets who were increasingl ...

avant garde: Encyclopedia II - Objectivist poets - Early publications

The first appearance of the group was in a special issue of Poetry magazine in February 1931; this was arranged for by Pound and edited by Zukofsky. As well as Bunting, Oppen, Rakosi, Reznikoff, Williams and Zukofsky, the issue included work by a number of poets who would have little or no further association with the group. These included Robert McAlmon, Kenneth Rexroth, Whittaker Chambers, Henry Zolinsky, J ...

avant garde: Encyclopedia II - Derek Bailey - Bailey's music

For listeners unfamiliar with experimental musics, Bailey's distinctive style can be initally quite difficult. Its most noticeable feature is what appears to be its extreme discontinuity, often from note to note: there may be enormous intervals between consecutive notes, and rather than aspiring to the consistency of timbre typical of most guitar-playing, Bailey interrupts it as much as possible: four consecutive notes, for instance, may be played on an open string, a fretted string, via harmonics, and using a nonstandard technique such as s ...

avant garde: Encyclopedia II - Yoko Ono - Life with Lennon

Ono is best known for marrying The Beatles' John Lennon. They first met when Lennon visited a preview of an exhibition of Ono's in London in 1966. He was taken with the attitude and interactivity of her work, such as a ladder leading up to the word "Yes" written on the ceiling, that she wanted him to have to pay 200 pounds to hammer a nail into a panel of wood (as the show was only beginning the day after), and a decomposing apple. They began an affair two years later, eventually resulting in Lennon divorcing his first wife, Cynthia. They married on March 20, 1969 on the Rock of Gibraltar. Their son, Sean, was born o ...

avant garde: Encyclopedia II - Serialism - History of serial music

The serialization of rhythm, dynamics etc developed after the Second World War by arguing that the twelve-tone music of Arnold Schoenberg and his followers of the Second Viennese School had serialized pitch, and was partly fostered by the work of Olivier Messiaen and his analysis students, including Karel Goeyvaerts and Boulez, in post-war Paris. Twelve-tone music is regarded by some as a sub-category of serialism, and by others serialism is seen as an outgrowth of twelve-tone music.

avant garde: Encyclopedia II - The Beatles - History

In March 1957, John Lennon formed a skiffle group, The Blackjacks, who later became The Quarrymen. On 6 July of that year, Lennon met Paul McCartney through a mutual friend while playing at the Woolton Parish Church Garden Fete, and shortly afterwards, Lennon invited McCartney to join his fledgling group. The lineup that McCartney joined featured Lennon, Eric Griffiths on guitar, Len Garry on "tea-chest" bass, Pete Shotton on "washboard" and Colin Hanton on drums. In February 1958 the young guitarist George Harrison joined the group, which w ...

avant garde: Encyclopedia II - Madrid - Contemporary Madrid

Contemporary Madrid came into its own after the death of the Fascist dictator Francisco Franco. Years of the Franco regime left Madrid and much the country in economic shambles due to isolation. With his death, Madrid, and Spain as a whole, began to reassert itself on the international stage. Within Spain, reaction against the dictatorial bureaucracy centered in Madrid and a history of centralism that predated Franco by centuries has resulted in the successful modern movement towards increased autonomy for the regions of Spain, considered as au ...

avant garde: Encyclopedia II - David Bergelson - Biography

Born in the Ukrainian shtetl of Okhrimovo (also known as Okhrimovka, now Sarny), near Uman, he first became known as a writer in the wake of the failed Russian Revolution of 1905. From a Hasidic background, but having received both religious and secular education, much of his writing is reminiscent of Anton Chekhov: stories of "largely secular, frustrated young people…, ineffectual intellectuals…",[1] frustrated by the provincial shtetl li ...

avant garde: Encyclopedia II - The Residents - Noted projects

The album Third Reich & Roll, an obvious yet amusing pun, tackled the theme of the corporate music industry. The sleeve, adorned with swastikas, depicted images of corporate music businessmen as Nazis. On each side of the record was a single composition, approximately 17 ½ minutes long, using recordings of classic rock & roll songs that were spliced, overdubbed and edited with new vocals, instrumentation and tape noises. The original songs were finally removed leaving entirely new and bizarre performances, or "ruined" version ...

avant garde: Encyclopedia II - Paul Hindemith - Hindemith's Music

Hindemith is seen by some as the most significant German composer of his time. His early works are in a late romantic idiom, and he later produced expressionist works, rather in the style of early Arnold Schoenberg, before developing a leaner, contrapuntally complex style in the 1920s, which some people found (and still find) difficult to understand. It has been described as neoclassical, but is very different from the works by Igor Stravinsky labelled with that term, owing more to the contrapuntal la ...

avant garde: Encyclopedia II - George Crumb - Crumb's music

After initially being influenced by Anton Webern, Crumb became interested in exploring unusual timbres. He often asks for instruments to be played in unusual ways and several of his pieces are written for electrically amplified instruments. Crumb's music often seems to be concerned about the theatre of performance as much as the music itself. In several pieces he asks players to leave and enter the stage during the piece. He has also used unusual layouts of musical notation in a number of his scores. In several pieces, the music is symbolic ...

avant garde: Encyclopedia II - Music of California - 1970s and 80s

The early part of this era was dominated by country rock acts such as The Eagles and Poco, and singer-songwriters such as Jackson Browne and Joni Mitchell. There were also funk acts that were prominent such as War from the South Central (now South) district of Los Angeles, and Sly and the Family Stone and Tower of Power from Oakland. Santana blended rock, jazz, funk and Latin music. This period also saw a number of difficult to classify acts arising who did not sell many records, but proved to be very influential on things to come, such as K ...
