August 17th: Encyclopedia II - 17th Street Canal - Hurricane Katrina

After Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans, the 17th Street Canal Levee was breached over a two city-block wide length on the New Orleans side, contributing to extensive flooding in New Orleans. For two days after the storm, the Fox News television network repeatedly showed helicopter footage which they identified by narration and caption as the 17th Street Canal breech, but was actually a breech in the Industrial Canal, near the other side of the city. On 31 August Senator David Vitter corrected the network on air, but captions mislabeling the footage continued to be aired for hours more. 17t ...

August 17th: Encyclopedia II - Peter MacKay - Conservative party merger

The meltdown in MacKay's leadership of the PC Party could be reflected in the fact that an August 17th Ipsos-Reid public opinion poll suggested that by August 2003 the party's national support had dropped to 12% from 19% in May 2003. This could be compared to the increases in support enjoyed by both the Liberal Party of Canada (44%) and the Canadian Alliance (15%). In the same poll, only 5% of Canadians viewed MacKay as a possible future Prime Minister, below Ste ...

The Harmonic Convergence was supposed to be a global awakening to love and unity through divine transformation. It was initiated in 1987 by Jose Arguelles. August 17th: Encyclopedia II - Hurricane Alicia - Storm history

A cold front moved through the Gulf of Mexico. On the extreme western end of it, a mesoscale low-pressure area developed on August 14, developing into a tropical depression on the 15th. The depression became Tropical Storm Alicia later that day. Steering currents were weak, due to a ridge of high pressure to the north. Alicia drifted to the west, gradually strengthening to a hurricane on the 17th. As the ridge receded eastward, Alicia was able to move more northward. As it approached the Texas coast, it quickly strengthened to a 115 m ...

August 17th: Encyclopedia II - Belgian Revolution - The opera riot

Catholic partisans watched with excitement the unfolding of the July Revolution in France, details of which were swiftly reported in the newspapers. The opening phase was a riot the night of August 25, 1830, following a performance of Daniel Auber's sentimental and patriotic opera La Muette de Portici, a tale suited to fire National Romanticism, for it was set against Masaniello's uprising against the Spanish masters of Naples in the 17th century. The duet, "Amour sacré de la patrie," with Adolphe Nourrit in the tenor role, engendere ...

August 17th: Encyclopedia II - Home Army and V1 and V2 - Bombing raid on Peenemunde

Combined with intelligence obtained from non-Polish sources this became enough to convince the British that "something was going on" in Peenemunde on Uznam. Consequently Churchill issued an order for a bombing raid. After a deft ruse on the part of the RAF which mislead the Germans as to the intended target of the raid, Peenemunde was successfully bombed on the night of August 17th, 1943 (Operation Hydra). The action was the largest bombing raid of the war thus far and involved more than 600 bombers. It managed to destroy the manufacturing f ...

The park has long been an epicenter of activity in the city going back to the days of New Amsterdam in the 17th century, when it served as cattle market and parade ground. In 1733, the local government laid out a bowling green and offered it for rent to three local residents for one peppercorn a year.
