Atonement: Encyclopedia - Atonement

The Atonement is the central doctrine of Christianity: everything else derives from it. It is reconciliation with God, of people who have sinned. It is a concept of forgiveness and repair, based on the mercy of God, the central idea of Christianity. It attempts to explain why the sinless human being Jesus died, and in terms of the Trinity, why God the Son, the second Person of the Trinity, incarnated in human flesh as Jesus, suffered horribly and died on the cross. Especially prominent in western Christianity is the conc ...

Atonement: Encyclopedia - Atonality
Atonality describes music that does not conform to the system of tonal hierarchies, which characterizes the sound of classical European music between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries. Atonality usually describes compositions written from about 1923 to the present day, where the hierarchy of tonal centers, in some cases, may not be used as the primary way to organize a work. Tonal centers gradually replaced modal organization starting in the 1500s and culminated with the establishment of the major-min ...

Atonement: Encyclopedia II - Atonality - History of atonality

While music without a tonal center had been written previously, for example Franz Liszt's Bagatelle sans tonalité of 1885, it is with the 20th century that the term atonality began to be applied to pieces, particularly those written by Arnold Schönberg and The Second Viennese School. Their music arose from what was described as the crisis of tonality in the late 19th century and early 20th century in classical music. It was described by composer Ferruccio Busoni as the “exhaustion of the major-minor key system,” an ...

Atonement: Encyclopedia II - Arminianism - Atonement

Traditionally, Arminians have held to the governmental theory of the atonement. A substitutionary view, this doctrine says that Christ suffered as a propitiation in order to demonstrate the seriousness with which God views sin. This is in opposition to the Calvinist penal-satisfaction theory which maintains that Christ died in the sinner's place and stead bearing the punishment due the Elect. Arminians generally have believed that if Christ took humankind's punishment, then forgiveness would not be possible; they believe that punishment and forgiveness are mutually exclusive. (See Hugo ...

Atonement: Encyclopedia II - Yom Kippur - Atonement

Yom Kippur - Forgiveness and vidduy. According to the Talmud, God opens three books on the first day of the year; one for the thoroughly wicked, another for the thoroughly pious, and the third for the large intermediate class. The fate of the thoroughly wicked and the thoroughly pious is determined on the spot; the destiny of the intermediate class is suspended until Yom Kippur, when the fate of everyone is sealed. The liturgical piece Unetanneh Tokef (attributed to Rabbi Amnon of Mainz) states: ...

Atonement: Encyclopedia - Blood atonement

In Mormonism, blood atonement is a controversial doctrine taught by some early Latter-day Saint leaders, and expanded by Brigham Young, that within a theocracy, there are certain sins such as murder that requires that murderers "have their blood spilt upon the ground, that the smoke thereof might ascend to heaven as an offering for their sins" in order for the Atonement of Jesus fully operative in the repentance process. While criticized by many Mormons and eventually repudiated as official Church doctrine by The Church of Jesu ...

In Christianity, Propitiation is a theological term denoting that by which God is rendered propitious, i.e., that 'satisfaction' or 'appeasement' by which it becomes consistent with His character and government to pardon and bless sinners.
