Atheism: Encyclopedia - Atheism

Atheism, in the broadest sense, is an absence of belief in the existence of god(s). That is, all who do not have such a belief - whether they think of themselves as nontheists, agnostics or even Buddhists - are covered under this term. Atheism can also be defined more narrowly as the active denial of the existence of god(s), either of a specific or general kind, or even that god(s) can exist. Generally speaking, atheism refers to a la ...

Atheism: Encyclopedia II - Atheism - Criticisms of atheism
Atheists and atheism have received much criticism and opposition throughout human history, chiefly from theistic sources who consider lack of belief in their god sinful, misguided, or immoral. There has also been some criticism from nontheistic sources, at least of various forms of atheism. It is possible from the standpoint of religious philosophy to assess the arguments without necessarily taking a position on the issue. The most direct arguments against atheism are those in favor of the existence of deities, which would imply that atheism is simply untrue. For example ...

Atheism: Encyclopedia II - Atheism - Religion and atheism

Atheism - Spiritual and religious atheism. Although atheistic beliefs are often accompanied by a total lack of supernatural beliefs, this is not an aspect, or even a necessary consequence, of atheism. Indeed, there are many atheists who are not irreligious or secular. These are most common in spiritualities like Buddhism and Taoism, but they also exist in sects of religions that are usually very theistic by nature, such as Christi ...

Atheism: The Spiritual Atheism Of Vedantic Thought

The Spiritual Atheism Of Vedantic Thought

Superficially, Gita appears to be theistic in nature. Verse 29 of Chapter 9 is one of several where Krishna tells Arjun about bhaktiyoga or the path of devotion. But the full shloka makes it clear that this is no ordinary worship. "The same am I to all beings, to me there is none hateful or dear; but those who worship me with devotion are in me and I am also in them". Moksha, in other words, is a state of oneness rather than duality.

Atheism: Atheism is a Truly Divine Science

Atheism is a Truly Divine Science

In 'The Song Divine', Krishna classifies nature as material nature and supernature. He says that supernature is incomprehensible to people who are not in tune with the subtlety of infinity. We think we choose to live, but the fact is we have no independent will to be born. Beyond food, sex and territory, animals are not aware of any other reality; they also do not have any aspirations towards immortality. Since there is no fear or idea of death in their lives, they have no concept of God or codified system of philosophy. They live by instinct and die without seeking to prolong their lives.

Atheism: Encyclopedia II - Brian Flemming - Atheism

In 2005, Flemming released his documentary The God Who Wasn't There. Through interviews and historical footage, Flemming investigates the evidence for the existence of Jesus, concluding that it's highly improbable he ever lived. After concluding this, Flemming discusses the beliefs of conservative Christian fundamentalists, Christian moderates (who he argues simply enable the fundamentalists), and returns to confront the principal of th ...

Atheism: Encyclopedia II - Atheism - Types and typologies of atheism

Many people have disagreed on how best to characterize atheism, and much of the literature on the subject is erroneous or confusing. There are many discrepancies in the use of terminology between proponents and opponents of atheism, and even divergent definitions among those who share near-identical beliefs. Opponents of atheism have frequently associated atheism with immorality and evil, often characterizing it as a willful and malicious rejection of gods. This, in fact, is the original definition and sense of the word, but changing sensibilities and the normalization of nonreligious viewpoints have caused the ...

Atheism: Encyclopedia - Weak atheism

Weak atheism also called negative atheism or implicit atheism is the lack of belief in the existence of God or gods, without a commitment to the necessary non-existence of God or gods. Weak atheism contrasts with strong or explicit atheism, which is the belief that God or gods do not exist, and theism, which asserts that there is at least one god. The weak atheist generally gives a broad definition of atheism as a lack or absence of evidence justifying a belief in God or gods, which defines atheism as a range of position ...

Atheism: Encyclopedia - Agnostic atheism

Agnostic atheism is the philosophy that encompasses both atheism and agnosticism. Due to definitional variance, an agnostic atheist does not believe in God or gods and by extension holds true one or more of these statements: The existence and nonexistence of deities is currently unknown and maybe absolutely unknowable. Atheism: Encyclopedia - Antitheism

Antitheism (sometimes anti-theism) is a direct opposition to theism. Atheism: Encyclopedia - Weak agnosticism

Weak agnosticism, or empirical agnosticism (also negative agnosticism), is the belief that the existence or nonexistence of deities is currently unknown, but is not necessarily unknowable. Weak agnosticism is in contrast to strong agnosticism, in which the agnostic believes that the existence of any gods is not only unknown, but is also unknowable to humanity. Neither type of agnosticism is fully irreconcilable with theism (belief in a deity or deities) nor strong atheism. A weak agnostic who also considers themse ...

Antireligion is opposition to all religions. People who are antireligious may see religions as dangerous, destructive, or foolish, though, like irreligious people in general, they may not be completely secular or lacking in spirituality, though a majority are. In some cases antireligion is based on rational grounds, such as arguments against the validity, usefulness, or ethicality of religion, while in other cases it involves an irrational fear or hatred of religion, sometimes resulting from generalizing complaints about a sing ...

Atheism: Encyclopedia - Agnostic theism

Agnostic theism is the philosophy that encompasses both theism and agnosticism. An agnostic theist is one who disavows knowledge of God's existence but chooses to believe in God in spite of this. Agnostic theism - The position. The validity of the theist's position is debated because believers typically state "God exists" as a fact, implying knowledge of it on their behalf. The agnostic theist however does not state that. Rather he says that he doesn't know whether God exists or not but simply believes in G ...

Nārāyana Guru (नारायण गुरु) (1856 - 1928) was a great sage and social reformer of India. Born in Ezhava/Thiyya community (a Backward Community in today's parlance), he demonstrated a path to social emancipation without invoking the dualism of the opressed and the opressor. In contrast to certain other reformers who critized Brahmins and "upper caste" Hindus for the conditions of the "lower castes", Nārāyana Guru stressed on the upliftment of the community through its own efforts by the establishme ...

Atheism: Encyclopedia - World Pantheist Movement

The World Pantheist Movement (WPM) is an organization of people associated with pantheism, a philosophy which asserts that spirituality should be centered on nature. It claims membership in many countries. Some critics claim that the WPM is "atheism for nature-lovers," while the WPM itself insists that their worldview, while "compatible" with atheism, encompasses much more than atheism alone. Although generally considered a successful organization, the WPM has experienced some opposition in pantheist circles, ...
