Ataxia: Encyclopedia - Ataxia

Ataxia (from Greek ataxiā, meaning failure to put in order) is unsteady and clumsy motion of the limbs or trunk due to a failure of the fine coordination of muscle movements. Ataxia often occurs when parts of the nervous system that control movement are damaged. People with ataxia experience a failure of muscle control in their arms and legs, resulting in a lack of balance and coordination or a disturbance of gait. While the term ataxia is primarily used to describe this set of symptoms, it is sometimes also used to refer to a family of disorde ...

Ataxia: Encyclopedia II - Spinocerebellar ataxia - Types
The following is a list of some, not all, types of Spinocerebellar ataxia. The first ataxia gene was identified in 1993 for a dominantly inherited type. It was called “Spinocerebellar ataxia type 1" (SCA1). Subsequently, as additional dominant genes were found they were called SCA2, SCA3, etc. Usually, the "type" number of "SCA" refers to the order in which the gene was found. At this time, there are at least 22 different gene m ...

Ataxia: Encyclopedia II - Ataxia telangiectasia - Classification

So far there appear to be three forms of AT: Pure AT where patients present with all/most of the diagnostic symptoms. Attenuated AT where sufferers do not possess all of the diagnostic symptoms. Carrier AT where individuals with a single ATM mutation show an increased risk of cancer (known since the 1970’s). These are sometimes classified into ‘types’ from I to IV. Type I is the classic syndrome with all manifestations. Type II lacks some of the typical findings but sho ...

Ataxia: Encyclopedia - Automatic Writing album

Automatic Writing is an album by Ataxia released in 2004. Ataxia consists of John Frusciante, Josh Klinghoffer (Bicycle Thief) and Joe Lally (Fugazi). • Ataxia: Encyclopedia II - Ataxia telangiectasia - Aetiology

AT is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the ATM gene located on chromosome 11q22-23 (OMIM 208900). It was characterised in June of 1995 and is made up of 66 exons spread across 150kb of genomic DNA. It encodes a 13kb mature transcript with an open reading frame of 9168 nucleotides. The ATM protein is about 370kDa long and is ubiquitously expressed and is localised to the cell nucleus. The ATM protein is a large serine-threonine kinase thought to play a role in regulating cell cycle checkpoints, repair of double stranded ...

Ataxia: Encyclopedia II - Ataxia telangiectasia - Differential Diagnosis

Nijmegen syndrome, also known as ataxia telangiectasia variant 1, is a very rare syndrome which could be considered as a differential diagnosis to AT. People with Nijmegen syndrome show the same immunodeficiency, radiosensitivity and risk of cancer as AT but do not have any ataxia or oculo-cutaneous telangiectasia. Nijmegen syndrome sufferers also show microcephaly. The gene associated with Nijmegen syndrome is known to be located on 8q21 and thought to play a similar role to the ATM gene. In the ear ...

    Ataxia: Encyclopedia - Anita Harding

Anita Harding (September 17, 1952 - September 11, 1995) was a British neurologist. Anita Harding made several significant contributions especially in the field of inherited neurologic disorders. Her major achievements are the classification of the peripheral neuropathies and hereditary ataxias, the first identification of a mitochondrial DNA mutation in human disease and the identification of trinucleotide repeats in degenerative neurologic diseases (e.g. Huntington's disease). She has also worked extensively on the popula ...

At therapeutic doses, phenytoin produces horizontal gaze nystagmus, which is harmless but occasionally tested for by law enforcement as a marker for drunkenness (which can also produce nystagmus). At toxic doses, patients experience sedation, cerebellar ataxia, and ophthalmoparesis, as well as paradoxical seizures. Idiosyncratic side effects of phenytoin, as with other anticonvulsants, i ...

Patients with cerebellar dysfunction experience problems in walking, balance, and accurate hand and arm movement. Recent brain imaging studies using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) show that the cerebellum is important for language processing and selective attention. Neuropsychiatric disorders such as dyslexia and autism appear to be associated with a deficiency in the cerebellum, which may also play a role in the development of certain ataxias, including a form of cerebral palsy. Ataxia: Encyclopedia II - Adrenoleukodystrophy - Symptoms

The clinical presentations is largely dependant on the age of onset of the disease. The most frequent type is the childhood-onset one, which normally occurs in males between the ages of 5 and 10 and is characterized by failure to develop, seizures, ataxia, adrenal insufficiency and degeneration of visual and auditory function. In the adolescent-onset form, the spinal cord dysfunction is more prominent and therefore is called adrenomyeloneuropathy or "AMD". The patients usually present with weakness and numbness of the limbs and urination or defecation problems. Most victims of this form are also males, although female ...
