History of astrology - Western astrology's Babylonian origins.
The history of western astrology can now be traced back to ancient Babylonia, and indeed to the earliest phases of Babylonian history, i.e. to about 3000 B.C.
In Babylonia as well as in Assyria as a direct offshoot of Babylonian culture (or as we might also term it "Euphratean" culture), astrology takes its place in the official cult as one of the two chief means at the disposal of the priests (who were called bare or "inspectors") for ascertaining the will and intention of the gods, the other being through the inspection of ...

| | | | Astrology and Medicine: Encyclopedia II - History of astrology - Historical proponents of astrologyThe influence of the Medici made astrologers popular in France.
Richelieu, on whose council was Jacques Gaffarel (1601-1681), the last of the Kabbalists, did not despise astrology as an engine of government.
At the birth of Louis XIV a certain Morin de Villefranche was placed behind a curtain to cast the nativity of the future autocrat. A generation back the astrologer would not have been hidden behind a curtain, but have taken precedence over the doctor.
La Bruyère dares not pronounce against such beliefs, "fo ...

| | | | Astrology and Medicine: Encyclopedia II - History of astrology - OverviewAstrology is not limited to Western astrology alone, which by itself has dozens of branches and various offshoots. In modern India the ancient Vedic astrology (or Jyotish) is commonly used to this day, and in China Chinese astrology has existed for thousands of years and continues to flourish. The ancient Greeks formed Hellenistic astrology while the Mayans of Central America also developed their own form of astrology. The ancient Egyptians also had another system of astrology. A unique system of astrology eventually emerged in Tibet as well. Other cultures and civilizations around the world also develo ...

| | | | Astrology and Medicine: Encyclopedia II - Astrology - The seven liberal arts and astrologyIn medieval Europe, a university education was divided into seven distinct areas, each represented by a particular planet and known as the Seven Liberal Arts. They were seen as operating in ascending order, beginning with Grammar which was assigned to the quickest moving celestial body (the Moon) and culminating in Astronomia which was thought to be astrologically ruled by Saturn, the slowest moving and furthest out planet known at the time. After this sequence wisdom was ...

| | | | | Astrology and Medicine: Encyclopedia II - Astrology - Effects on world cultureAstrology has had a profound influence over the past few thousand years on Western and Eastern cultures, along with the English language. Also, the adjectives "lunatic" (Moon), "mercurial" (Mercury), "martial" (Mars), "jovial" (Jupiter/Jove), and "saturnine" (Saturn) are all old words used to describe personal qualities said to resem ...

| | | | Astrology and Medicine: Encyclopedia II - History of astrology - Noted predictionsA few salient facts may be added concerning the astrologers and their predictions, remarkable either for their fulfilment or for the ruin and confusion they brought upon their authors. We may begin with one taken from Bacon's Essay of Prophecies:
"When I was in France, I heard from one Dr Pena, that the queen mother, who was given to curious arts, caused the king her husband's nativitie to be calculated, under a false name; and the astrologer gave a judgment, that he should be killed in a duell; at which the queene laughed, thi ...

| | | | Astrology and Medicine: Encyclopedia II - Validity of astrology - How astrologers view astrologyTo those who practice astrology professionally see it as a science that seeks to investigate the influence of celestial bodies relative to the Earth and the influences therein. Through direct observation of the influences of the Sun, Moon, planets and stars; astrology is essentially a study of patterns and cycles in time and space. They reject claims by skeptics and scientific cynics that astrology is "unscientific" or defined as a "pseudo-science" by conventional science, when it was astrologers who invented such mathematics used in modern ...

| | | | Astrology and Medicine: Encyclopedia II - Validity of astrology - Arguments for astrologySome astrologers maintain that gravitational or tidal forces are the mechanism behind astrology, but the idea that tidal forces from the gravitational influence of the Moon affect biological organisms is only recently gaining some scientific support after years of resistance and debunking from the conventional scientific commuity. Moreover, some modern astrologers state that the solar wind emanating from the Sun regulates weather on Earth and fuels the solar system with powerful magnetic energy that planets orbit through - thus modulati ...

| | | | Astrology and Medicine: Encyclopedia II - Validity of astrology - Arguments against astrologyThere is no viable conventional scientific case for astrology, and there are currently no credible scientists who support the idea. Here are some common arguments used by astrology skeptics.

Dictionary I on ASTROLOGY ASTROLOGY Is the science, which is able to interpret the influences of the heavenly bodies on human beings and their affairs. Just as it is known that the moon has a profound influence on our oceans’ tides, so are humans affected in a similar way. We are, after all, about 80% water. Using the birth or natal chart, which maps the positions of the planets at the time of birth, is each individual's information derived. The interpretation of the chart includes the understanding of the relationships between planets and the signs of the zodiac. Including the area of the chart in which they will fall, symbolic factors, the location of birth, which assists in the examination of the different levels of the emotional and spiritual psychology, and physiology of the individual. Astrology can help someone to explore deeper individual potential and meaning, to see how aspects of the personality may be integrated. This facilitates an understanding of the cycles of life and creation, thus promoting ways to achieve the greatest practical application and fulfillment from the energies symbolized in the chart. | | | | Astrology and Medicine: Encyclopedia II - House astrology - RulershipIn Hellenistic, Vedic, Medieval and Renaissance astrology each house is ruled by the planet that rules the sign on its cusp. For example, if a person has the sign Aries on the cusp of their 7th house, then the planet Mars is said to "rule" their 7th house. This means that when a planet is aloted a house, it's nature comes to have some bearing on that specific topic in the person's life, and that planet is said to be very important for events specifically pertaining to that topic. The placement of this planet in the chart will have at least a ...

| | | | Astrology and Medicine: Encyclopedia II - Validity of astrology - How skeptics view astrologySkeptics believe that astrology is a form of pseudoscience, which attempts to lay claim to the prestige of science without submitting itself to the discipline of scientific method. Skeptics consider astrology to lack falsifiability. That is, it is not possible to construct a test for astrology that it could demonstrably fail.
Given that most astrologers claim to make predictions about future events, it should be possible to construct an experiment that at least measures its accuracy. No such experiment has ever demonstrated the object ...
