Ashikaga Yoshiaki: Encyclopedia II - Toyotomi Hideyoshi - Rise to power

Toyotomi Hideyoshi was born in what is now Nakamura-ku, Nagoya in the Owari province, the home of the Oda clan. He was born with no traceable samurai lineage and hence without a surname: his childhood given name was Hiyoshimaru (日吉丸), although variations exist. According to Maeda Toshiie and a European missionary named Luis Frois, he was polydactyl - he had two thumbs on his right hand, and he didn't cut his extra thumb as other Japanese in his period would do. As a youth, he first joined the Imagawa clan as a servant of local ruler Matsushita, u ...

Ashikaga Yoshiaki: Encyclopedia II - Muromachi period - Ashikaga Bakufu

The ensuing period of Ashikaga rule (1336–1573) was called Muromachi for the district in which its headquarters were in Kyōto after the third shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu established his residence in 1378. What distinguished the Ashikaga bakufu from that of Kamakura was that, whereas Kamakura had existed in equilibrium with the Kyōto court, Ashikaga took over the remnants of the imperial government. Nevertheless, the Ashikaga bakufu was not as strong as the Kamakura had been and was greatly preoccupied by the civil war. Not until the rule of Ashikaga Yoshimitsu (as third shogun, 1368–94, and chanc ...

Ashikaga Yoshiaki: Encyclopedia II - History of Japan - Wars with China and Russia

Japanese intellectuals of the late-Meiji period espoused the concept of a "line of advantage," an idea that would help to justify Japanese foreign policy at the turn of the century. According to this principle, embodied in the slogan fukoku kyōhei (富国強兵), Japan would be vulnerable to aggressive Western imperialism unless it extended a line of advantage beyond its borders which would help to repel foreign incursions and strengthen the Japanese economy. Emphasis was especially placed on Japan's "preeminent interests" in the Kor ...
