Ashikaga Tochigi

Ashikaga (Japanese: 足利市, Ashikaga-shi) is a city located in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. As of 2003, the city has an estimated population of 161,259 and a density of 906.87 persons per km². The total area is 177.82 km². During the Heian Period, Ashikaga was developed by Minamoto no Yoshikuni, whose descendants later became the Ashikaga clan. The city was founded on January 1, 1921.
