Ashikaga (Japanese: 足利市, Ashikaga-shi) is a city located in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. As of 2003, the city has an estimated population of 161,259 and a density of 906.87 persons per km². Ashikaga Takauji (Japanese: 足利尊氏) (1305 – June 7, 1358) was the founder and first shogun of the Ashikaga shogunate. His rule began in 1338, beginning the Muromachi period of Japan, and ended with his death in 1358. Daitoku-ji (大徳寺) is a Rinzai Buddhist temple located in Kyoto, Japan. The temple complex has the mountain-name Ryuhozan (龍宝山), literally meaning "dragon treasure mountain."
