Arrogance: Encyclopedia II - Richard Butler diplomat - Butler at UNSCOM

In 1997 Butler was appointed Chairman of the United Nations Special Commission (UNSCOM), the UN weapons inspection organisation in Iraq, in succession to Rolf Ekéus. In this role he antagonised both the Iraqi regime and the United States, and was frequently described as arrogant and aggressive. UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan rebuked him for using "undiplomatic" language about then Iraqi ruler Saddam Hussein. While at UNSCOM Butler frequently argued that Saddam had undisclosed weapons of mass destruction. In a 1999 speech he said:

Arrogance: Encyclopedia II - Revenge of the Nerds - Plot summary

The scene is set in Adams College where two nerds enroll on account of its acclaimed computer studies department. Unfortunately, the college also displays inappropriate favoritism towards their football team, the Atoms. This gives the coach (John Goodman), an arrogant bully, and his team, stocked mainly by the equally obnoxious jocks of the Alpha Beta fraternity, considerable power on campus. This power is shown when the Alpha Betas burn down their fraternity house. They pressure the Dean of the campus to let them use the freshman dor ...

Arrogance: Theosophy Dictionary on Abhimana

Abhimana (Sanskrit) (from abhi towards + the verbal root man to think)

Thinking towards oneself; pride, arrogance, hence delusion. Covetousness manifesting in acquisitiveness, bringing about longing for what is thought about, in its turn inducing conceit. In Sankhya philosophy, a high or egotistic conception of oneself (usually therefore erroneous). It springs into action in the human constitution when awakened by the propulsive or impulsive energy of kama. Ahamkara, the human ego-function, is the prime motivator of abhimana.

Arrogance: Encyclopedia II - Aspen - Cultural aspects

The aspen tree's quivering leaves are, in Christian lore, said to be the result of arrogance at the Crucifixion because the aspen did not tremble like other trees. A German version claims that the aspen was the only tree to refuse to acknowledge Jesus' divinity. The cross that Christ was crucified on is sometimes said to have been aspen wood. As aspens do not occur in Israel, this legend is improbable. It is also sometimes said that aspen leaves are made from female tongues, and their quivering is due to women's inability to stop talking. Basque sheepherders of the 19th and 20th century carved texts and figures on aspens of the Ameri ...

Arrogance: Encyclopedia II - Don Dixon - Biographical information

Don Dixon was born in Lancaster, South Carolina. He is considered to be one of the key producers of what is called the jangle pop movement of the early 1980s. He spent several years as a member of the little-known band Arrogance. Around 1983, Dixon attracted attention by co-producing with Mitch Easter, R.E.M.'s landmark debut LP Murmur. He then spent several years producing the work of varied artists including Chris Stamey (formerly of The dB's) and The Windbreakers. Arrogance: Encyclopedia II - Cool Runnings - Plot

Candy's character is co-opted into organising a Jamaican bobsled team by three sprinters (Leon, Yoba, and Lewis) who had lost their chance to go to the Summer Olympics and a fourth member, a largely ne'er-do-well known for driving a push cart (Doug). The first half of the movie centres on Jamaica and assembling and training the team. The second half of the movie is the drama of the Olympics, and the fish-out-of-water scenario of the laid-back tropical Reggae Jamaicans in both the arrogant European-dominated sport and the ...

Billick's background includes a stint as a public relations liaison for the San Francisco 49ers. He is known as being a player's coach, letting team leaders such as Ray Lewis have a lot of influence in the locker room. Billick also stands behind his team in times of crisis, such as Lewis's arrest in 2000 on murder charges that were later dismissed, and running back Jamal Lewis's federal investigation into drug trafficking. Arrogance: Encyclopedia II - British Airways ethnic liveries - Criticism

The adoption of this livery was seen as a move away from the traditional and strictly British image of the carrier. BA suggested that the previous "Landor" scheme carried an air of arrogance and detachment, and insisted that the new tailfins were very popular with international travellers. However they were never popular in the UK, despite nine of the designs being inspired by either England, Scotland or Wales (and one Irish scheme). Margaret Thatcher showed her displeasure at the designs by covering one of the new tailfins on a model 747 with a handkerchief. She ...

Arrogance: Encyclopedia II - Liam Gallagher - Public Persona

Oasis appeared on the music scene in 1994 and quickly made a public image for themselves. Whereas other Britpop bands such as Elastica and Manic Street Preachers chose not to play the media 'game', or if they did it was usually seen as un-inspiring, Oasis chose to portray themselves, arguably realistically, as loud mouthed, arrogant and aggressive. This caught the public's imagination. Though the other members of the band took this role lightly, Liam appears to have really taken it to heart, often verbally abusing photographers and members of the public in his Mancu ...

In 88, Emperor Zhang died. Crown Prince Zhao succeeded to the throne as Emperor He, at age nine. Empress Dou, now empress dowager, served as regent. Her brothers Dou Xian, Dou Du, Dou Jing (竇景), and Dou Gui (竇瑰) all became powerful officials, even though they had relatively menial titles. Of her brothers, Dou Gui alone was humble and unassuming, but the other three, particularly Dou Xian, were arrogant, using their connection to ...

Arrogance: Encyclopedia II - Pumping Iron - Plot

The first part of the documentary features the Mr. Universe contenders and begins with a profile of Mike Katz who is intending to win the Mr. Universe. Competing against Katz is Ken Waller. The two are stark contrasts of each other: where Katz is humble and unassuming, Waller is arrogant and dirty (he deliberately hides Katz's belongings at the Mr. Universe to break his focus before going on stage). After a pose-down Waller, due to his superior definition and proportions, eventually wins the Mr. Universe with Katz coming a distant 4th place. ...

Arrogance: Encyclopedia II - Grandia Xtreme - Story

The world of Grandia Xtreme is populated by three distinct races: The militaristic and resourceful Humans, the magic-using and somewhat arrogant Arcadians (characterized by their teal or light green hair color, fair skin and pointed ears) and the tribal Demi-humans (characterized by dark skin, dark brown or red hair, and pointed ears). Although each of them has existed in an uneasy alliance for several years, a new epidemic known as the Elemental Disorder threatens to affect them all. Arrogance: Encyclopedia II - Bob Larson - John Safran's Exorcism

In 2003, Australian film maker John Safran came to do a story on Bob Larson for John Safran vs God, a documentary series on world religions. The final episode was devoted entirely to this encounter. It lacked all the arrogant flair of the previous 7 episodes, starting with a brief introduction to Bob. He talked about his past, and showed John a series of photographs of him with prominent political figures, including Margaret Thatcher, George Bush Senior, John Major and Colin Powell, saying; "No one im ...

Arrogance: Encyclopedia II - Gumby - Parodies

Eddie Murphy played a parody of Gumby in occasional sketches on Saturday Night Live. The first appearance of Murphy's Gumby aired during the show's eighth season on December 11, 1982 in a sketch titled "Merry Christmas, Dammit!" Wearing a foam costume, Murphy's Gumby was played as an older borscht belt comedian who smoked a cigar and depicted an arrogant celebrity indignant at his waning fame. As a sign of his frustration, Murphy's character was frequently heard to exclaim "I'm Gumby, dammit!" when he felt dis ...

Arrogance: Encyclopedia II - Hard code - Examples and utilities of hard code

Hard code - Product code. A program that has a unique product code always checks its maker's website to be sure that it hasn't been blacklisted as pirated. If the corporation changes its site layout or its domain name, or if it goes bankrupt and its site is pulled, the program will fail to work. Software developers doing this is considered as a serious mistake, since websites frequently disappear or get rearranged. However, these concerns may be ignored due to arrogance about the future existence of the website or company, or apathy abou ...

Arrogance: Encyclopedia II - Jeffrey Lundgren - Teenaged years

Lundgren was, by most accounts, an isolated person when he was in middle and high school. He was a kid with few friends, and a guy who spoke few words. Many of his peers thought of him as being arrogant and self-centered. According to one of his neighbors, Lundgren killed a rabbit when he was a teenager, apparently in a prelude of what would take place later on in life. Lundgren became an expert hunter when he began to hang out with his father as a teenager. The pair would go on hunting trips, and Lundgren became a gun ex ...

Arrogance: Encyclopedia II - Oberon's children - Titania

Lord Oberon can seem arrogant and cruel at times, so it must be pondered just how bad his young wife, the Lady Titania must have been for Oberon to levy and enforce a thousand-year banishment from Avalon upon her and every other member of their race in order to make her "grow up". Nevertheless the punishment seems to have worked, and Titania as she appears on the show is far more mature that her old self, appearing especially serene and mature when compared to her former husband. Oberon certainly seems to appreciate the change ...

At first the goals of this new, arrogant being seem unclear, but after a while they become quite certain. King desires to create a utopia in which robots will be able to live in peace and harmony. Arrogance: Encyclopedia II - Holi - Mythology

In Hindu mythology, Hiranyakashipu was the king of demons, and he had been granted a boon by Brahma, which made it almost impossible for him to be killed. The boon was due to his long penance, after which he had demanded that he not be killed 'during day or night; inside the home or outside; not on earth or on sky, neither by a man nor an animal'. Consequently, he grew arrogant, and attacked the Heavens and Earth. He demanded that people stop worshipping gods and start praying to him. But his own son, Prahlad, was a devotee of Lord Vishnu. I ...
