Arimaspi: Spiritual - Theosophy Dictionary on Arimaspi, Arimaspes, arimastioi

Arimaspi, Arimaspes arimastioi (Greek) In Greek mythology, a one-eyed people of the extreme northeast of Scythia, perhaps near the region of eastern Altai, mentioned by Aristeas of Proconnesus, from whom Herodotus derives his account.

They stole gold from the griffins who guarded it, and Apollo destroyed them with his shafts. The allegory, which is mixed up with history in Herodotus' account, refers to the supersession of a degraded remnant of third-eye people by the coming fifth root-race, as in the case of the Cyclopes.

Arimaspi: Encyclopedia - Arimaspi
The Arimaspi of northern Scythia, perhaps in the foothills of the Carpathians, were so utterly legendary to Greek writers that it was said they had a single eye in the center of their foreheads. They were said to steal gold from the griffins, causing battles between the two groups. All tales of their struggles with the gold-guarding griffins in the Hyperborean lands near the cave of Boreas, the North Wind (Geskleithron), had their origin in Arimaspea, the lost archaic poem of Aristeas of Proconnesus. Proconnesus is a sma ...

Arimaspi: Encyclopedia - Aristeas

Aristeas was a semi-legendary Greek poet and miracle-worker, a native of Proconnesus in Asia Minor, active ca. 7th century BC. In book IV of The History, Herodotus reports that Aristeas appeared to drop down dead in a shop, but before his relatives could collect the body, he had left on a seven-year long trip. Aristeas was supposed to have authored a poem called the Arimaspea, giving an account of travels in the far North. There he encountered a tribe called the Issedonians, who told him of still more fantastic and northerly peoples: the one-eyed Arimaspi who battle gold-guarding gryphons, and the Hyperbor ...

Arimaspi: Encyclopedia - Griffin

The griffin (also spelled gryphon, gryphen, griffon, griffen, or gryphin) is a legendary creature with the body of a lion and the head of an eagle with the addition of prominent ears, traditionally termed "ass's ears". The female has the wings of an eagle. The griffin is generally represented with four legs, wings and a beak, with eagle-like talons in place of a lion's forelegs and equine ears jutting from its skull. Some writers describe the tail as a serpent. See the entry European dragon for a 19th century painting of St George and the dragon, showing a dra ...

Arimaspi: Encyclopedia II - Griffin - Nature of griffins

Tales of griffins and the Arimaspi of distant Scythia near the cave of Boreas, the North Wind (Geskleithron) were elaborated in the lost archaic poem of Aristeas of Proconnesus, Arimaspea, and eagerly reported by Herodotus and in Pliny's Natural History. The griffin was said to build a nest, like an eagle. Instead of eggs, it lays agates. The animal was supposed to watch over gold mines and hidden treasures, and to be the enemy of the horse. The incredibly rare offspring of griffin and horse would be called hippogriff. Griffin ...

Arimaspi: Encyclopedia II - Griffin - Heraldic griffins

The griffin is often seen as a charge in heraldry. A heraldic griffin (or gryphon) has the hind parts (including legs and tail) of a lion, the upper parts (including feathered neck, wings, claws, and head with beak) of an eagle and also ears. It is the ears which distinguish the griffin's head from an eagle's head in heraldry, which is important because, as well as the full griffin, the griffin's head is also often found in heraldry and would oth ...

Arimaspi: Encyclopedia II - Issedones - Introduction

Issedones, an ancient people of Central Asia at the end of the trade route leading north-east from Scythia, described by Herodotus in Book Four of his History. Like the Massagetae to the west, the Issedones are described by Herodotus as similar to, yet distinct from, the Scythians. The exact location of their country is unknown; Herodotus (who allegedly got his information through both Greek and Scythian sources) describes them as living east of Scythia while the geographer Ptolemy appears to place them in the Tarym basin. They may have been identical with the ethnoi described in Chinese sources as < ...

Arimaspi: Encyclopedia II - Issedones - Controversy

The archeologists E. M. Murphy and J. P. Mallory of Queen's University, Belfast, have argued (in the June, 2001 issue of Antiquities) that Herodotus was mistaken in his interpretation of what he imagined to be cannibalism. Recently-excavated sites in southern Siberia, such as the large cemetery at Aymyrlyg containing more than 1,000 burials of the Scythian period, have revealed accumulations of bones often arranged in anatomical order, which indicate burials of semi-decomposed corpses or defleshed bodies sometimes associated with leat ...

Arimaspi: Encyclopedia II - Issedones - Description

Herodotus reported that a Greek, Aristeas son of Kaustrobios of Prokonnessos (or Cyzicus), had managed to penetrate the country of the Issedones and observe their customs first-hand. The Ptolemy relates a similar story about a Syrian merchant. According to Herodotus, the Issedones practiced euthanasia of their elderly males, followed by a ritual feast at which the deceased patriarch's family ate his flesh, gilded his skull, and placed it in a position of honor much like an idol. In addition, the Issedones were supposed to have kept th ...
