DLM envisioned both these schools as parts of his dream to provide the best possible education for less privileged people. Indeed, even, in their infancy, DLM’s schools matriculated students whose parents were slaves, Native-Americans, and from outside the US -- something that was unimaginable in many elite private schools at that time. | | | | Ariel Sharon: Encyclopedia II - Yom Kippur War - Background
Yom Kippur War - Causes.
This war was part of the Arab-Israeli conflict, a conflict which has included many battles and wars since 1948. During the Six-Day War six years earlier, the Israelis had captured the Sinai clear to the Suez Canal, which had become the cease-fire line. The Israelis had also captured roughly half of the Golan Heights from Syria.
In the years following that war, Israel erected lines of fortification in both the Sinai and the Golan Heights. In 1971 Israel spent $500 million fortifying ...

David Elazar - Events leading up to the war.
On 1 October 1973 the armies of Egypt and Syria were placed on alert. Due to an erroneous intelligence assessment and poor decisions by the Israeli military, the IDF responded with only limited measures, few reserve units were called up, and it was determined that war was "unlikely." In the early hours of October 6 (on Yom Kippur, the holiest of the Jewish holidays), Elazar was finally convinced that war would break out that same day, even though the Chief of Military ...

| | | | | Ariel Sharon: Encyclopedia II - Israeli peace camp - CriticismThe Israeli peace camp is highly criticized for lacking realism given the absence of a corresponding movement on the Arab side of the conflict. It is also accused for being forgiving toward Palestinian terrorism and not being able to stand up for the rights of the Israelis and the vital interests of Israel. The Israeli peace camp has poor standings in the Israeli public, as regular surveys by the Tami Steinmetz Center for Peace Research show (for example: May 2004). The Tami Steinmetz Center for Peace Research is watching over the Israeli public opinion toward the peace pr ...

| | | | Ariel Sharon: Encyclopedia II - Israeli settlement - Tensions mistrust and accusationsThe settlements have on several occasions been a source of tension between Israel and the U.S. In 1991 there was a clash between the Bush administration and Israel, where the U.S. delayed a subsidized loan in order to pressure Israel not to proceed with the establishment of settlements for instance in the Jerusalem-Bethlehem corridor. Jimmy Carter has said that the settlements constitute a "major obstacle to peace". The current Bush administration, while generally supportive of Israel, has said that settlements are "unhelpful" to the peace p ...

Shinui - Religion and state.
Despite nearly 30 years of public support of Liberal-Capitalist economic and social policies, its best known platform plank is a call for separation of religion and state within the confines of Zionist ideology. It demands civil marriage (although it has opposed a bill to enact it in March 2004), the operation of public transportation, businesses, theaters, etc. on Saturdays (the Shabbat, Jewish Sabbath), removal of laws concerning selling and importing non-kosher food, drafting of Haredi Jews into the IDF, and a halt to p ...

| | | | Ariel Sharon: Encyclopedia II - Terrorism against Israel - Early historyThe roots of Jewish-Arab animosity go back to Ottoman times, when the Jewish community of Palestine was under the thumb of a few wealthy effendi (landlord) families. These families, most prominently the Husseinis and the Nashashibis, employed criminals to attack Jews who threatened rent prices by living outside the city walls. [citation needed]
