When the United States joined the First World War in 1917, Seldes was sent to France where he worked as the war correspondent for the Marshall Syndicate. At end of the war he obtained an exclusive interview with Paul von Hindenburg, the supreme commander of the German Army. but the article was suppressed and never appeared in the American press.

One of the first articles published in the newsletter concerned the link between cigarette smoking and cancer.
