archery: Encyclopedia - Yabusame

Yabusame (流鏑馬) is a type of Japanese archery, one that is performed while riding a horse. The archer shoots a special "turnip-headed" arrow at a wooden target. This style of archery has its origins at the beginning of the Kamakura period. Minamoto no Yoritomo became alarmed at the lack of archery skills his samurai had. He organized yabusame as a form of practice. Nowadays, yabusame is performed at the Tsurugaoka Hachiman Shrine in Kamakura. It is also performed in Samukawa and on the beach at Zushi, as well as o ...

archery: Encyclopedia - Arrow

An arrow is a pointed projectile that is shot with a bow. It predates recorded history and is common to most cultures. An arrow consists of a long and thin shaft made formerly of wood and now also from aluminium or carbon fiber composite. It is pointed or armed with an arrowhead at one end and with a nock or notch in the other. Arrowheads fit hunting and military purpose better than a mere point, which is mostly useful for target-shooting. Near the notch end are vanes which keep the arrow pointed in the direction of trav ...

There is much controversy over hunting with a bow, also known as bowhunting. Many people believe that bows are an acceptable if not preferred way to take game, while others, such as animal rights activists, find the practice objectionable. In North America, bow hunting is regulated much as rifle hunting. Regulations address issues of where and which animals may be hunted with a bow, as well as technical specifications for "tackle" such as minimum draw weight, arrow weight and arrowhead design. A much more lethal, unbarbed "broa ...

There is much controversy over hunting with a bow. This practice is known as bowhunting. Many people believe that bows are an acceptable if not preferred way to take game, while others, mostly radical animal lovers, find the practice objectionable. In North America, bow hunting is usually legal and often encouraged over rifle hunting. Many American hunters prefer using a bow because of the added challenge. While a rifle hunter may take a shot at any distance under 200 yards (180 m), archers must get within 30 yards (27 m). Some locali ...

After boycotting the 1980 Summer Olympics, the United States returned to archery in 1984 and edged out the newly powerful Korean team. Korea, which had not competed in Olympic archery since 1972, also grabbed two medals. The medals, one gold and one bronze, both came from the women's competit ...

In the autumn of 1905, Dod and her brothers sold "Edgeworth" and moved to a new home near Newbury, Berkshire. Yabusame was designed as a way to please and entertain the myriad of gods that watch over Japan, thus encouraging their blessings for the prosperity of the land, the people, and the harvest. A yabusame archer gallops down a 255-meter-long track at high speed. The archer mainly controls his horse with his knees, as he needs both hands to draw and shoot his bow.
