Arc Lamp: Encyclopedia - LampA lamp in general is any device that produces light. Originally, this meant a source of light from an open flame. The word now commonly refers to an electric lamp that sits on a table, desk, or on the floor. It refers specifically to the light bulb (or tube) itself, hence "relamping" refers to the replacement of only the light source in a light fixture. For communication between ships, a signal lamp was commonly used. See lighting and light fixture for more information.
