His work often depicts aspects of the supernatural world overlayed with aspects of the natural world. Some viewers report that elevated or spiritual states are induced while viewing - which, in the tradition, is the purpose of sacred art. His work has an eclecticism that often integrates auras, human anatomy, religious icons (sometimes reminiscent of thangkas), geometric shapes and tessellations (sometimes reminiscent of mandalas), ...

Ken Wilber - The neo-perennial philosophy.
The Croatian esoteric philosopher Arvan Harvat has argued that attempting to integrate a thoroughly nondual approach like Zen with an evolutionary view is ultimately impossible: if your model includes absolutely everything, how can it change? Wilber's response is that it is only Form that evolves; Emptiness remains unchanged. Trans-conceptually, one can embrace one's own transrational (and hence ultimately ineffable) experience-awareness, and this is what con ...

| | | | AQAL: Encyclopedia II - Sri Aurobindo - Aurobindo's evolutionary philosophyThese philosophical and cosmological themes are applied to Sri Aurobindo's vision of cosmic and human evolution. He argues that mankind as an entity is not the last rung in the evolutionary scale, but can evolve spiritually beyond its current limitations, moving out of an essential Ignorance born of creation, to a future state of Supramental existence. This would be a Divine Life on Earth characterised by knowledge, truth, substance and ene ...

Pierre Teilhard de Chardin - Early years.
Pierre Teilhard de Chardin was born in Orcines, close to Clermont-Ferrand, in France. He was the fourth child of a large family. His father, an amateur naturalist, collected stones, insects and plants, and promoted the observation of nature in the household. Teilhard's spirituality was awakened by his mother. When he was 11, he went to the Jesuit college of Mongré, in Villefranche-sur-Saône, until completing baccalaureates of philosophy and mathematics. Then, in 1899, he entered the Jesuit novitiate at Aix-en-Provence begi ...

| | | | | AQAL: Encyclopedia II - California Institute of Integral Studies - The nameThe "Integral" of the school's name has nothing to do with mathematical integrals, but translates a technical term from the writings of Sri Aurobindo, namely "Integral Yoga" (purnayoga). By this Aurobindo intends to harmonize the paths of karma-, jnana-, and bhakti-yoga as described in the Bhagavad-Gita--roughly speaking, body, mind, and spirit. In the CIIS context the term also suggests various other possible divisions to be integrated as well (e.g. East and West, masculin ...

| | | | | AQAL: Encyclopedia II - The aim of integral yogaMost yogas only develop a single aspect of the being, and have as their aim a state of liberation or transcendence. But the aim of integral yoga is the transformation of the entire being. Because of this, the various elements of one's make-up - Physical, Vital, Mental, Psychic, and Spiritual, and the means of their transformation, are described in great detail by Sri Aurobindo, who in this way formulates an entire integral psychology. The goal is then the transformation of the entire nature of one's being. Nothing is left behind.

| | | | | AQAL: Encyclopedia II - Sex Ecology Spirituality - ContentPublished in 1995, SES (as it is sometimes abbreviated) is the work in which Wilber grapples with modern philosophical naturalism, attempting to show its insufficiency as an explanation of being, evolution, and the meaning of life. He also describes an approach, called vision-logic, which he finds qualified to succeed modernism.
Wilber's project in this book requires nothing less than a complete re-visioning of the history of Eastern and Western thought. There are four philosophers that Wilber finds to be of the highest importa ...

| | | | AQAL: Encyclopedia II - Pierre Teilhard de Chardin - Controversy with Church officialsIn 1925, Teilhard was ordered by the Jesuit Superior General Vladimir Ledochowski to leave his teaching position in France and to sign a statement withdrawing his controversial statements regarding the doctrine of original sin. Rather than leave the Jesuit order, Teilhard signed the statement and left for China.
This was the first of a series of condemnations by certain church officials that would continue until long after Teilhard's death. The climax of these condemnations was a 1962 monitum of the Holy Office denouncing his works. F ...

| | | | AQAL: Encyclopedia II - Stuart Davis musician - Business and successWith the formation of Dharma Pop in 1998 (previously known as Post-Apocalyptic Records), Stuart created a new business model for artists. According to Davis' website, "Dharma Pop's purpose is to create music that amplifies awareness, and the formal elements of these songs (melodies, hooks, rhythms) are a Trojan Horse, sneaking mysticism into mainstream culture." Dharma Pop consists of volunteers, who manage Davis' products, websites and performances; "Punk Monks" who promote his shows; and investors. Thus Davis has succeeded in financing a profess ...

| | | | AQAL: Encyclopedia II - Stuart Davis musician - MiscellaneousDavis has created an original language, called "IS", which uses a script that Davis also created. Characters from this script can be seen on the cover of Davis' most recent album, Bell. Although Davis has declared his daughter to be the first native speaker (she was born in September of 2003), he says that he intends to record an entire album in the language at some point.
Davis has a tattoo on his wrist that says "Memento mori". This tattoo caused him to be detained at Canadian border. Davis has toured ...

For the next six and a half years this became the vehicle for most of his most important writings, which appeared in serialised form. These included The Life Divine, The Synthesis of Yoga, Essays on The Gita, The Secret of The Veda, Hymns to the Mystic Fire, The Upan ...

| | | | AQAL: Encyclopedia II - Sri Aurobindo - Aurobindo's integral yogaThe metaphysical teaching is balanced by a practical method, called Integral Yoga.
Integral Yoga is so-called because it involves the synthesis of the three yogas - bhakti, karma, and jnana - of the Bhagavad Gita. It is also called "Integral" because it embodies and integrates all aspects of life.
Of these three, bhakti is central, and in keeping with the Hindu tradition of the Divine Mother, Sri Aurobindo teaches devotion to the Mother (see his short devotional book The Mother), personified in his co-worker Mirra Ric ...
