Apology: Encyclopedia - A Mathematician's Apology

A Mathematician's Apology is a 1940 essay by British mathematician G. H. Hardy (ISBN 0521427061). It concerns the aesthetics of mathematics with some personal content, and gives the layman an excellent insight into the mind of a working mathematician. It is, however, a very individual view, and Hardy's opinions are not universally held by mathematicians. A Mathematician's Apology - Summary. In the book's title, Hardy uses the word "apology" in the sense of a formal justification or def ...

Apology: Encyclopedia II - A Mathematician's Apology - Summary
In the book's title, Hardy uses the word "apology" in the sense of a formal justification or defense (as in Plato's Apology of Socrates), not in the sense of a plea for forgiveness. There were two main reasons why Hardy felt the need to justify his life's work in mathematics at this time. Firstly, at the age of 62, Hardy felt the approach of old age (he had survived a heart attack in 1939) and the decline of his mathematical creativity. He wanted to explain his mathematical philosophy to the next generation of mathematicians. S ...

Apology: Harder than saying sorry

American Biswanath Halder had always nursed what he believed was a legitimate grudge against his old college. Three years ago he went berserk  which left Norman Wallace, a young student, dead.

While sentencing him to life imprisonment, the judge told a seemingly nonrepentant Halder that some of Wallace's relatives were in court and that he owed them an apology. Halder responded with: "It's a terrific tragedy and I'm exceptionally sorry." To this, one of the victim's brothers replied: "I do forgive you. I don't want to have that on me. I don't want to be like you."

Genuine apologies are, of course, very difficult and Halder's was nowhere near that.

Apology: Encyclopedia - Apology Plato

(The) Apology (of Socrates) is Plato's version of the speech given by Socrates as he defends himself against the charges of being a man "who corrupted the young, did not believe in the gods, and created new deities". "Apology" here has its earlier meaning (now usually expressed by the word "apologia") of a formal defence of a cause or of one's beliefs or actions (from the Latin apologia, from the Greek "apo" and "logos"). Apology: Encyclopedia - Apology of the Augsburg Confession

The Apology of the Augsburg Confession was formulated by Philip Melanchthon as the response to the Roman Confutation against the Augsburg Confession. Melanchthon was writing a defense of the original Confession, and a refutation of this Confutation that Emperor Charles V had commissioned. The second edition, published in September 1531 in Latin is the edition that is most widely recoginzed as the best and includes changes to the original that were suggested by Martin Luther. The Book of Concord includes it as a Lutheran confessiona ...

Apology: Encyclopedia - Apology Xenophon

Xenophon's Apology describes Socrates' state of mind at his trial and execution, and especially his view that it was better to die before senility set in than to escape execution by humbling himself before an unjust persecution. Specialists believe that Xenophon's interpretation of the trial was written in response to a widespread literary reaction following the trial, where Athenian public figures and authors used the theme of Socrates trial to state their views on his guilt. The main part of the text is a direct blow for blow ...

Apology: Encyclopedia - Cult apologist

A cult apologist is a term to describe a scholar of cults and/or new religious movements perceived as responding to the movements they study with advocacy instead of with neutral scholarship. In some scholarly literature (Zablocki and Robbins, 2001) the term is used neutrally to denote the pro-cult camp in the scholarly disputes about cult questions compared to cult bashers as term for the anti-cult camp. Other terms used are cult critics and cult sympathizers, "mental health coalition" and "religion coalition" (Bromley, 2005), pro-cultists and anti-cultists. When used by ...

Justin Martyr - Life. Most of what is known about the life of Justin Martyr comes from his own writings. He was born at Flavia Neapolis (in Old Testament times Shechem, now Nablus) in Palestine. Apology: Encyclopedia - Apologetics

Apologetics is the field of study concerned with the systematic defense of a position. Someone who engages in apologetics is called an apologist or an "apologete". The term comes from the Greek word apologia (απολογια), meaning defense of a position against an attack. When John Henry Newman entitled his spiritual autobiography Apologia Pro Vita Sua in 1864, he was playing upon both connotations. Early uses of the term include Plato's Apology (the defense speech of Socrates from his trial) and some works of ...

Apology: Encyclopedia - Augsburg Confession

The Augsburg Confession, in Latin Confessio Augustana, is the central document of the Lutheran reformation, which was a reaction against the Roman Catholic Church. It was originally written in both German and Latin, and was presented by the princes of Saxony at the Diet of Augsburg on June 25, 1530. The Holy Roman Emperor Charles V had called upon the Princes and Free Territories of Lutheran confession in Germany to explain their religious convictions in order to resolve the question of re ...

Apology: Encyclopedia - Forgiveness

Forgiveness is a choice the forgiver makes to let go of resentment held in the forgiver's mind of a perceived wrong or difference, either actual or imagined. As the choice of forgiveness is made in the mind of the forgiver, it can be made about any resentment, whether toward another, oneself, a group, a situation or even one's God. Forgiveness of another can be granted with or without the other asking for forgiveness. Some believe the choice of forgiveness is only properly exercised if forgiveness is requested. Another view is that fo ...

Apology: Encyclopedia II - All Apologies - Meaning

Like many Nirvana songs, "All Apologies" is defined not so much by a specific meaning as by the mood and atmosphere it communicates. The aforementioned January 1991 studio version features a decidedly upbeat arrangement and even a tambourine, suggesting that Cobain at first saw it as simply a catchy pop song, in the vein of perhaps an early Beatles single, or an R.E.M. song circa Green. By the time it was recorded for In Utero, however, the song had adopted a darker tone, giving a certain finality to lyrics such as the chorus r ...

Apology: Encyclopedia II - Apology Plato - Introduction

Socrates begins by saying he does not know if the men of Athens (his jury) have been persuaded by his accusers. This first sentence is crucial to the theme of the entire speech. Plato often begins his Socratic dialogues with words which indicate the overall idea of the dialogue; in this case, "I do not know". Indeed, in the Apology Socrates will suggest that philosophy consists entirely of a sincere and humble admission of ignorance, and that wisdom is really nothing m ...
