Deus ex machina - Literature and comics.
In Shakespeare's Hamlet, the kidnapping of Hamlet, alone, by pirates in order to escape his orchestrated death in England is in large part an example of deus ex machina, only toward the climax of the play.
Shakespeare's As You Like It also has an example of deux ex machina when Hymen comes to the mass wedding to sort out the problems of Rosalind's stay and disguise in the Forest of Arden.
A Series of Unfortunate Events, ...

| | | | antimatter: Encyclopedia II - Multiverse DC Comics - Contact between universesMost inhabitants of the Multiverse are completely unaware of the other universes. The first character to cross the gap between them was Barry Allen, the Flash of Earth-One, who accidentally vibrated at just the right speed to appear on Earth-Two, where he met Jay Garrick, his Earth-Two counterpart.
Other characters with super-speed powers have been able to duplicate the trick, but it has not been done routinely. Magic and technological devices have done the job as well. The Justice League of America's "transmatter" device (ordinarily ...

Crisis was used by DC as an opportunity to wipe much of its slate clean and make major changes to many of their major revenue-generating comic book series. Frank Miller's revamp of Batman with Batman: Year One, George Perez's relaunching of Wonder Woman, and John Byrne's reboot of Superman (see The Man of Steel) all took place shortly following Crisis on Infinite Earths, ...

Livewires - Backstory.
Project Livewire was founded by S.H.I.E.L.D. as a means of testing the next generation S.H.I.E.L.D. android. These androids are based on the long standing S.H.I.E.L.D. android the Life Model Decoy, and the LMD successor the Mannite. The androids of Project Livewire combine the super-human abilities of the Mannites with the human appearance of the Life Model Decoys. Most of the work for Project Livewire was done by David Jenkins, the assistant chief designer of the project.
In total ten androids were created for Project Livewire. By the beginning of the limited ser ...

The particle ion source comes in various forms such as cold cathode, hot cathode, photocathode, or RF ion sources. If heavier particles are to be accelerated, (e.g. protons) an appropriate source of ions is a hot cathode. However, a heated electrode, called a filament is more common.
A high voltage source for the initial injection of particles.
A hollow pipe vacuum chamber. The length will vary with the application. If the device is used f ...

Eye of Harmony - First appearances.
The Eye was originally mentioned in the Fourth Doctor serial The Deadly Assassin (1976), where it was revealed as the source of power that sustained Gallifrey. According to the ancient records, the Eye was the nucleus of a black hole, which the legendary Time Lord figure Rassilon captured and placed beneath the citadel of the Time Lords on Gallifrey (known as the Panopticon). He placed it in a perfectly "balanced" condition, so that as long as the Eye existed, the power ...

Gravitational interaction of antimatter - Supernova 1987A.
Many scientists consider the best experimental evidence in favor of normal gravity to come from the observations of neutrinos from Supernova 1987A. In this landmark experiment, three neutrino detectors around the world simultaneously observed a cascade of neutrinos eminating from a supernova in a nearby galaxy. Although the supernova happened about 164,000 light years away, both neutrinos and antineutrinos may have been detected virtually simultaneously. ...

Although it is true that the neutron has zero net charge, it is nonetheless composed of electrically charged quarks, in the same way that a neutral atom is nonetheless composed of protons and electrons. As such, the neutron experiences the electromagnetic interaction. The net charge is zero, so if you are far enough away from the neutron that it a ...
