Anti-Semitism - Anti-Semitism in the Middle Ages: Encyclopedia - Anti-Semitism

Anti-Semitism (alternatively spelled antisemitism) is hostility toward or prejudice against Jews as a religious, ethnic, or racial group, which can range from individual hatred to institutionalized, violent persecution. The highly explicit ideology of Adolf Hitler's Nazism was the most extreme example of this phenomenon. Anti-Semitism has historically taken different forms: Religious anti-Semitism, or anti-Judaism. Before the 19th century, most anti-Semitism was primarily religious in nature, based on Christian or ...

Anti-Semitism - Anti-Semitism in the Middle Ages: Encyclopedia II - Anti-Semitism - Etymology and usage
The word antisemitic (antisemitisch in German) was probably first used in 1860 by the Jewish scholar Moritz Steinschneider in the phrase "antisemitic prejudices" (German: "antisemitische Vorurteile"). Steinschneider used this phrase to characterize Ernest Renan's ideas about how "Semitic races" were inferior to "Aryan races." These pseudo-scientific theories had become quite widespread in Europe in the second half of the 19th century, ...

Anti-Semitism - Anti-Semitism in the Middle Ages: Encyclopedia - Jew

Jew - Usage note. Some uses of the term "Jew" are tainted by historic anti-Jewish bigotry. The correct adjectival form is "Jewish"; the use of "Jew" as an adjective (as in "Jew lawyer" rather than "Jewish lawyer") is associated with bigotry. The use of "Jew" or "jew" as a verb (as in "to jew someone down": to bargain for a lower price) is generally seen as an extremely offensive expression based on stereotypes. Even when used in a grammatically correct manner as a noun, the term "Jew" can objectify a ...

Anti-Semitism - Anti-Semitism in the Middle Ages: Encyclopedia - Christianity and anti-Semitism

This article is about the history of Christianity and anti-Semitism. Anti-Jewish sentiment has been expressed by many Christians over the last 2000 years, but many other Christians, increasingly in recent years, have also condemned these sentiments. Christianity and anti-Semitism - Early origins. There have been philosophical differences between Christianity and Rabbinical Judaism since the outset. Debates between the early Christians - who at first were all Jews - and other Jews initially revolved around the ques ...

Anti-Semitism - Anti-Semitism in the Middle Ages: Encyclopedia - Arrow Cross

The Arrow Cross (Nyilaskereszt) originated in Hungary in the 1930s as the symbol of the leading Hungarian fascist political party, the Arrow Cross Party, led by Ferenc Szálasi, an ex-army major. Leaders of National Council of the Arrow Cross after Szálasi included Jeno Szollosi, Josef Gera and Ferenc Kassai-Schallmajer. In 1939 it numbered close to 500,000 members and won 31 seats in parliamentary elections. The Arrow Cross party lasted until the end of World War II in 1945. Subsequently, the symbol came to be used by other racist and anti-Semitic groups. From October 1944 - January 1945 the Arrow Cross sent 80 ...

Anti-Semitism - Anti-Semitism in the Middle Ages: Encyclopedia II - Christian opposition to anti-Semitism - Sicut Judaeis Non Bull

This "Constitution for the Jews" was the official position of the papacy regarding the Jews throughout the Middle Ages and later. Alexander III is the author of the oldest existing version of the bull. The bull was reaffirmed by many popes, even hundreds of years after Alexander III. Excerpts from the translation of the bull follows: "[The Jews] ought to suffer no prejudice. We, out of the meekness of Christian piety, and in keeping in the footprints or Our predecessors of happy memory, the Roman Pontiffs Calixtus, Eugene, Alexander, ...

Anti-Semitism - Anti-Semitism in the Middle Ages: Encyclopedia II - The Merchant of Venice - Shylock and the anti-Semitism debate

The play is frequently staged today, but is potentially troubling to modern audiences due to its central themes, which can easily appear anti-Semitic. Critics still argue over whether the play is itself anti-semitic, or that it is merely a play about anti-semitism. The Merchant of Venice - The anti-Semitic reading. English society in the 1600s was undeniably anti-Semitic. English Jews had been expelled in the Middle Ages and were not permitted to return until the rule of Oliver Cromwell. Jews were presente ...

Anti-Semitism - Anti-Semitism in the Middle Ages: Encyclopedia II - Persecution of Jews - Arab and Islamic

edit Main articles: Islam and Judaism; Islam and anti-Semitism Islam and Judaism have a complex relationship. Jews were allowed to live as dhimmis under Islam; yet the political conflict between Muhammad and the Jews of Medina in the 7th century left ample ideological fuel for Islam and anti-Semitism through the centuries. During the Middle Ages, Jews typically had a better status in the Muslim world than in Christendom, though still short of full equality with Muslims. As the Mu ...

Francophobia - World War II. The behaviour of the French before and during World War II is contested on several points. The French government (like the British) actively pursued the policy of appeasement and accepted Hitler's various violations of the Versailles treaty and his demands at Munich in 1938. The misguided policy of appeasement – which was wildly popular in much of Western Europe – should be understood however in the context of the massive losses of World War I, fought in large part on ...

Anti-Semitism - Anti-Semitism in the Middle Ages: Encyclopedia II - Jew - Historical background

At least for three thousand years, the Jewish people have lived in the Land of Israel, where they developed a monotheistic religion and enjoyed periods of self-determination. As a result of foreign conquests and expulsions, the Jewish diaspora has formed. Most of the Jews were expelled from their national homeland by the Romans in the year 135 and since then had a troubled existence surviving discrimination, oppression, poverty and even extermination (see article Anti-Semitism), but sometimes also ...

Anti-Semitism - Anti-Semitism in the Middle Ages: Encyclopedia II - Jewish history - 1800s

Though persecution still existed, emanicipation spread throughout Europe in the 1800s. Napoleon invited Jews to leave the Jewish ghettos in Europe and seek refuge in the newly created tolerant political regimes that offered equality under Napoleonic Law (see Napoleon and the Jews). By 1871, with Germany’s emancipation of Jews, every European country except Russia had emancipated its Jews. Despite increasing integration of the Jews with secular society, a new form of anti-Semitism emerged, based on the ideas of race and nationhood ra ...

Anti-Semitism - Anti-Semitism in the Middle Ages: Encyclopedia II - Francophobia - France as Imperial Power

France's colonial empire earned it many enemies, among rival colonial countries, especially Great Britain, but most of all among colonized people, especially following the exactions during the Algerian War of Independence. Most of that anger was against colonialism rather than the French, though. A more serious matter is hostility towards the French government because of its involvement in African affairs, which some qualify as neocolonialism.
