Anthroposophical medicine: Encyclopedia II - New Age - Language

Many adherents of belief systems characterised as New Age rely heavily on the use of metaphors to describe experiences deemed to be beyond the empirical. Consciously or unconsciously, New Agers tend to redefine vocabulary borrowed from various belief systems, which can cause some confusion as well as increase opposition from skeptics and the traditional religions. In particular, the adoption of terms from the language of science such as "energy", "energy fields", and various terms borrowed from quantum physics and psychology but not then app ...

Anthroposophical medicine: Encyclopedia II - Rosicrucian - History

It is on the foundation of these teachings that Rosenkreuz conceived the plan for simultaneous and universal religious, philosophic, scientific, political, and artistic reform. For the realization of this plan, he united with several disciples (seven at first, according to Fama Fraternitatis), to whom he gave the name of Rose-Croix. The founder of the Order of the Rose-Croix belonged, as affirmed by historians, to a noble family, but there is no document that allows us to affirm this peremptorily. However, it is certain that he w ...

Anthroposophical medicine: Encyclopedia II - Rosicrucian - Origins

According to a legend published in the 17th century Rosicrucian manifestos, the Rosicrucian Order was founded in 1407 (the early 15th century) by a German pilgrim named Christian Rosenkreuz (1378 - 1484), who studied in the Middle East under various occult masters. During his lifetime, the Order was alleged to be small, consisting of no more than eight members. When Rosenkreuz died in 1484, the Order disappeared, only to be "reborn" in the early 17th century. Most modern Rosicrucianists accept this legend to varying degrees. Some accept it a ...

Anthroposophical medicine: Encyclopedia II - Rosicrucian - Rose Cross: Alchemy and Divine Sciences of Healing & of the Stars

The alchemy in the laboratory (the ancestor of modern chemistry), where the ultimate goal was understanding of the laws of Nature in order to aid the individual's quest for perfection, recalls another type of alchemy, the one called spiritual. The true alchemists, or philosophers of the fire, often make reference in their works to the blowers, meaning all those who were just interested the creation of gold and the material aspects of alchemy. In his laboratory, the alchemist works on the materia prima and surrounds himsel ...

Anthroposophical medicine: Encyclopedia II - Rudolf Steiner - Steiner the activist and the threefold nature of social life

For a period after World War I, Steiner was extremely active and well-known in Germany in part because in many places he gave lectures on social questions. A petition expressing his basic social ideas (signed by Herman Hesse, among others) was very widely circulated. His main book on social questions, Die Kernpunkte der Sozialen Frage (available in English today as Toward Social Renewal) sold tens of thousands of copies. Today around the world there are a number of innovative banks, companies, charitable institutions, and schoo ...

Anthroposophical medicine: Encyclopedia II - Homeopathy - The scientific validity of homeopathy

The following are the main scientific issues that arise in the ongoing debate between skeptics and proponents of homeopathy: Most scientists consider homeopathy to be lacking any plausible mechanism. They often view homeopathy as a pseudoscientific remnant from the age of alchemy, when important concepts such as molecules and germs were understood poorly or not at all. In the view of modern scientists, the basic interactions of molecules are sufficient to explain all known chemical and biological phenomena, even if many proces ...

Anthroposophical medicine: Encyclopedia II - Homeopathy - Basic principles

Homeopathy - Theory of disease. The conventional theory of disease in Hahnemann's time was based on the four humours. Mainstream medicine focused on restoring the balance in the humours, either by attempting to remove an excess of a humour (by such methods as bloodletting and purging, the use of laxatives, enemas and nauseous substances that made patients vomit) or by suppressing symptoms associated with the humours causing trouble, such as giving feverish (and so hot and wet) pa ...
