The novel is depicted in eight parts. Part 1 introduces the character Prince Stepan Arkadyevitch Oblonsky ("Stiva"), a civil servant who has been unfaithful to his wife Darya Alexandrovna ("Dolly"). Stiva's affair shows an amorous personality which he cannot seem to suppress.
