Dhatu (Sanskrit) Constituent part, ingredient; an equivalent to mahabhuta (element), the range or plane of primeval matter, five usually being reckoned: kha or akasa (ether); anila (wind); tejas (fire); jala (water); bhu (earth); but esoterically there are seven.
 
"As there are seven Dhatu (principal substances in the human body) so there are seven Forces in Man and in all Nature" (SD 1:290).
 
In Southern Buddhism, the word also means residue, relics (that which remains after the body has been cremated), and applied especially to the relics of the Buddha''s body alleged to have been collected after its cremation.
