Andrea Pisano (c. 1270 - 1348), also known as Andrea da Pontadera, was an Italian sculptor and architect. (Another source states that he was born circa 1290 and died in 1348 or 1349[1].) He first learned the trade of a goldsmith. Pisano then became a pupil of Mino di Giovanni, about 1300, and worked with him on the sculpture for S. Maria della Spina at Pisa and elsewhere. Andrea Pisano: Encyclopedia II - Santa Maria del Fiore - Interior

The cathedral is built as a basilica, with a nave and two aisles, forming a Roman cross. The nave and the aisles are divided by wide pointed arches with composite pilasters, dividing the nave into four square bays. Its dimensions are enormous: length 153 m (about 500 ft.), width 38 m (128 ft.), width at the crossing 90 m (almost 300 ft.). The height of the arches in the aisles is 23 m (75 ft.). The heigth from pavement to the opening of the lantern in the dome is also 90 m (300 ft). The Gothic interior is cavernous and gives an empty impression. The relative bareness of the church corresponds with the austerity of r ...

Andrea Pisano: Encyclopedia II - Pisa - History

Pisa - Ancient times. Pisa's origins are unknown. The city lies at the junction of two rivers, Arno and Auser (now disappeared) in the Tyrrhenian Sea forming a laguna area. The Pelasgi, the Greeks, the Etruscans and the Ligurians have variously been proposed as founders of the city. Archeological remains from the 5th century BC confirm the existence of a city at the sea, trading with Greeks and Gauls. The presence of an Etruscan necropolis was discovered during excavations in the Arena Garibaldi in 1991. A ...

Andrea Pisano: Encyclopedia II - Gothic art - Overview

Gothic art told a narrative story through pictures, both Christian and secular. The earliest Gothic art was Christian sculpture, born on the walls of Cathedrals and abbeys. Christian art was often typological in nature (see Medieval allegory), showing the stories of the New Testament and the Old Testament side by side. Saints' lives were often depicted. Images of the Virgin Mary changed from the Byzantine iconic form to a more human and affectionate mother, cuddling her infant, swaying from her hip, and showing the refined manners ...

Andrea Pisano: Encyclopedia II - Door - History

The earliest records are those represented in the paintings of the Egyptian tombs, in which they are shown as single or double doors, each in a single piece of wood. In Egypt, where the climate is intensely dry, there would be no fear of their warping, but in other countries it would be necessary to frame them, which according to Vitruvius (iv. 6.) was done with stiles (sea/si) and rails (impages): the spaces enclosed being filled with panels (tympana) let into grooves made in the stiles and rails. The stiles were the vertical boards, one of ...

Andrea Pisano: Encyclopedia II - Battistero di San Giovanni Florence - Baptistery doors

In 1329, Andrea Pisano, recommended by Giotto, was awarded the commission to design the first set of doors. The South Doors were originally installed on the east side, facing the Duomo, but transferred to their present location in 1452. The bronze casting and gilding was done the Venetian Leonardo d'Avanzano, widely recognized as one of the best bronze smiths in Europe. This took no less than six years and the doors were completed in 1336. These Proto-Renaissance doors consist of 28 quatrefoil panels, with the 20 top panels depicting ...

Andrea Pisano: Encyclopedia II - Giorgio Vasari - The Vite

As the first Italian art historian, he initiated the genre of an encyclopedia of artistic biographies that continues today. Vasari coined the term "Renaissance" (rinascita) in print, though an awareness of the ongoing "rebirth" in the arts had been in the air from the time of Alberti. Vasari's great work was first published in 1550, and dedicated to Grand Duke Cosimo I de' Medici; it included a valuable treatise on the technical methods employed in the arts. It was partly rewritten and enlarged in 1568 and provided with woodcut portraits of artists (some conjectural), entitled Delle Vite de' più ...

Andrea Pisano: Encyclopedia II - Battistero di San Giovanni Florence - Interior

The vast interior of the baptistery recalls the interior of the Pantheon in Rome. The interior is rather dark, light entering through the small windows in the ambulatory and through the lantern. The interior is divided in a lower part with columns and pilasters and an upper part with an ambulatory. The Florentines didn't spare any trouble or expense to decorate the baptistery. The interior walls are clad in black and white marble with inlaid geometrical patterns. The niches are separated by monolithic columns of Sardinian granite. The marble revestment of the interior was begun in the second half of the 11th cent ...

Andrea Pisano: Encyclopedia II - Door - Types of doors

A door may slide or rotate. Sliding is usually horizontal. In the case of rotation, the axis of rotation is usually vertical, but e.g. for garage doors often horizontal, above the door opening. Sometimes the axis of rotation is, with a special construction, not in the plane of the door, on the other side than that in which the door opens, to reduce the space required on the side to which the door opens. This is sometimes the case in a train, for ...

Andrea Pisano: Encyclopedia II - Giotto's Bell Tower - History

On the death in 1302 of Arnolfo di Cambio, the first Master of the Works of the Cathedral, and after an interruption of more than thirty years, the celebrated painter Giotto di Bondone was nominated as his successor in 1334. At that time he was 67 years old. Giotto concentrated his energy on the design and construction of a campanile (bell tower) for the cathedral. He had become an eminent architect, thanks to the growing autonomy of the architect-designer in relation to the craftsmen since the first half of the 13th century. The first stone ...

For long time, it was believed, that Roman temple dedicated to Mars, the tutelar god of the old Fiorentina. As founder of this legend, Dante is often mentioned, but this is wrong. The founder of this Legend, was Giovanni Villani in the 14th century. However excavations in the 20th century have shown that there was a first century Roman house (domus) at this site, since remains of a Roman construction have been found. Andrea Pisano: Encyclopedia II - Andrea - Andrea in popular culture

In America, the name Andrea has acquired an arguably unfair reputation of stereotypically belonging to someone older and more nerdy in recent years and anecdotal evidence points to the popularity of Beverly Hills 90210 and its fictional character of Andrea Zuckerman (played by Gabrielle Carteris), who was indeed a mousey nerdy type, being a major influence on this perception. Another prominent fictional Andrea (though played by a real Andrea, Andrea Byrne) was in the 1980s children's television programme You Ca ...

Andrea Pisano: Encyclopedia II - Battistero di San Giovanni Florence - Exterior

The baptistery has eight equal sides with a rectangular addition on the west side. This octogonal shape symbolizes the "eight day" (in Latin : octava dies). This is the time of the Risen Christ, a time beyond our own time measured in weeks of seven days. It was considered a symbol for the eternal life given through baptism, when one passes from life in sin to a new life in Christ. The sides, originally in sandstone, are clad in geometrically patterned coloured marble, white Carrara marble with green Prato marble inlay, rew ...
