Ancient Healing: Health and Healing Dictionary on Ayurveda

Ayurveda: (ancient Indian medicine, Vedic medicine): Ancient Hindu medical-metaphysical healing science based on the harmony of body, mind and universe through diet, exercise, herbs, and purification procedures. It emphasizes the capability of the individual for self-healing using natural remedies to restore balance.

Allegedly, the most complete system of natural medicine and the mother of all healing arts. Ayurvedic theory includes a subtle anatomy that includes: nadis, canals that carry prana (cosmic energy) throughout the body; chakras, "centers of consciousness" that connect body and soul; and marmas, points on the body beneath which vital structures (physical and/or subtle) intersect. Ayurvedic diagnosis involves examination of the eyes, face, lips, tongue, nails, and pulse. The pulse is important because of the belief that the heart is the seat of the underlying intelligence of nature ie human consciousness.

Ancient Healing: Holistic Health Dictionary I on TONING

TONING

All of creation is energy, which vibrates according to varying frequencies. Our physical bodies are no exception, and which also responds to the appropriate sounds that can help you to regain balance, good health and emotional stability.

The ancients knew of this and we can see from the chanting of Sama Veda from India, the Tibetan Chants, Gregorian Chants, and many more instances of the healing virtues of sound. Toning by musical instruments, such as the drum, as is used by the Native Americans and Africans, exemplifies the tradition and value of music and /or individualized musical notes.

The human voice has a tremendous range and capability as illustrated by the “Overtones” of the Tibetan monks. The appropriate tone allows the mind, body and spirit to harmonize and be in balance.

Ancient Healing: Holistic Health Dictionary I on REIKI

REIKI

Means "Universal Life-Force Energy," and was created by Dr. Mikao Usui of Japan, about 150 years ago. Hi was disillusioned with the standard medical procedures of his time, and set out on a journey to find something, that to him was on a higher level of healing. His travels took him to Tibet, where he found ancient texts of healing, with symbols of an extremely spiritual method of healing.

It is told that while descending a mountain in Tibet, he twisted his ankle, and prompted by what he had learned, applied this ancient method and healed his ankle. Upon returning to Japan, he formulated this modality into a method that he called “Reiki.” The “Rei” means universal, and “ki” means energy. It is understood that all of creation is energy, and when in particular the body is manifesting symptoms of disease, dis-ease, or is injured in any way, the universal energy flow is impeded, and the body is not able to maintain its natural state of optimum good health.

The Reiki practitioner places the hands directly on the recipient, or a few inches above the recipient’s body, without physical contact. In fact Reiki can be sent over great distances by thought and intent. Such is the nature of Universal Healing Energy.

The Reiki practitioner acts as a “bridge” to enable the transference of universal energy from source to reach the recipient, which them helps and stimulates the ability of the recipient to complete their own healing. We are, after all, part of universal energy, and are able to heal ourselves, but in many cases we require the assistance of others to help us bypass our own energy blocks. Reiki can be very effective for just about any and every ailment and disorder. It is a marvelous method to maintain the balance of the emotions, and the body. Anyone can learn this technique, by finding a Reiki Master Teacher, and receiving the attunements, while learning the modality. It is also effective to apply this healing modality to oneself.

Ancient Healing: Massage Bodywork Dictionary on HOLOTROPIC BREATHWORK

HOLOTROPIC BREATHWORK

Developed by Dr. Stanislov Grof, a psychiatrist working with people in non-ordinary states of consciousness, and by Christina Grof, a transpersonal teacher, this is a simple, yet powerful technique for self-exploration and healing based on combined insights from modern consciousness research, depth psychology, and perennial spiritual practices.

The method activates non-ordinary states of consciousness which mobilize the spontaneous healing potential of the psyche. Sustained effective breathing, evocative music, focused energy work, and mandala drawing are components of this subjective journey.

Holotropic literally means moving toward wholeness. Virtually all ancient and native traditions recognize the psychological and spiritual healing potential of states of consciousness that differ from what we call ordinary.

Holotropic Breathwork is a powerful method of self-exploration and healing. This work can be useful for artists wishing to facilitate their creativity, persons seeking a deep level of healing, those seeking to explore their inner self and/or the transpersonal dimensions, and it can lead to a spiritual opening and transformation.
