News presenter - Newsreader. A newsreader is a presenter whose role it is to read the news. In modern times, technology enables journalists to broadcast from relevant locations, reducing the role of the central presenter to that of a newsreader. The term is the most common one for a news presenter outside of the United States and Canada. Since the 1980s some broadcasters have moved away from using newsreaders, many of whom were simply actors who delivered a script written by others and who played no part in news gathering. Stations such as ...

Many of the on-air personalities of Count on 2 have been fixtures in the Charleston-area market for many years. Chief Meteorologist Rob Fowler has been with the station for more than 18 years becoming Chief Meteorologist in 1987, and the longest-serving meterologist in the market with the same station. Warren Peper, one of the most widely-known faces in Charleston television, joined Count on 2 in late 2005 after a one-year noncompete agreement expired between him and Jefferson Pilot Communications (which owned rival WCSC). WCBS was the highest-rated news operation in New York for most of the time from the mid-1960s until the early 1980s. Broadcasting pioneer Robert Trout did double duty as a CBS correspondent and as WCBS' main anchor for many years. In 1965, he left for a new assignment in Europe and was succeeded by Jim Jensen. Jensen had only come to WCBS a year earlier, but was already well-known for his coverage of Robert F. Kennedy's campaign for Senate a year earlier. His gravelly voice and demeanor were very similar to that of Walter Cronkite, and he wa ...

anchors: Encyclopedia II - WABC-TV - News operations

WABC-TV is best known for popularizing the Eyewitness News format, in which reporters present their stories directly to the viewers. News director Al Primo brought the format to WABC-TV from KYW-TV in Philadelphia, but added a twist--chatter among the anchors, known as "happy talk." For a theme, Primo used the "Tar Sequence" cue from the musical score from the 1967 hit movie Cool Hand Luke. Written by Lalo Schifrin, it included a telegraphic-like melody appropriate for a newscast. It was quickly adopted by ABC's other large market owned-and-operated stations, WLS-TV in Chicago, KABC-TV ...

The National - 1970s - 1982. WNBC was the first commercially licensed television station in the United States, starting broadcasting on Channel 1 as WNBT (for NBC Television) on July 1, 1941 at 1:29 p.m. and was most likely the only television station to have a news special report about the Pearl Harbor attack on December 7 of that year. However, it traces its history to experimental station W2XBS, founded in 1928. In 1946, the station changed its frequency from Channel 1 to Channel 4 after VHF channel 1 was removed from use for television br ...

On May 4, 2004, while covering a breaking news of a shooting in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn, the WNBC news helicopter "Chopper4" (a Eurocopter AS350BA, registered N4NY) suddenly fell out of the sky and crashed onto a Brooklyn apartment building rooftop. The pilot and two passengers miraculously didn't receive serious injuries. Rival TV station WABC-TV's news helicopter was covering the same news story when they saw the WNBC helicopter in trouble. They called for help and also got exclusive footage of the actual crash, ...

The original WABC-TV offices were located at 77 West 66th Street with studios at 7 West 66th Street. There was an underground tunnel that links ABC Studios at 7 West 66th Street to the lobby of the Hotel des Artistes a block north on West 67th Street. There was another studio inside the Hotel des Artistes that was used for Eyewitness News Conference. In a part of ABC's expansion program initiated in 1977, ABC built Seven Lincoln Square on the corner of 67th Street and Columbus Avenue on a site of an old six story brownstone . At about ...

WABC-TV also produces the successful syndicated morning talk show Live with Regis and Kelly, which originates in the same studio as Eyewitness News. This forces the local updates during Good Morning America to be produced from the WABC newsroom, and also limits the size of the Eyewitness News set; (while WNBC and WCBS-TV have comparatively large sets). The show began as a local morning show in 1983, aptly titled "The Morning Show" (using the circle-7 logo in the actual text), and was originally hosted by Re ...

The station first went on the air on September 17, 1948 as WENR-TV. It was named after WENR-AM, ABC's Chicago radio affiliate. In 1953, ABC merged with United Paramount Theatres, the former theater division of Paramount Pictures. UPT owned CBS affiliate WBKB-TV, but the new ABC could not keep both. As a result, WBKB was sold to CBS and renamed WBBM-TV, while WENR was renamed WBKB-TV. The old WBKB's talent stayed at WBBM, while the old WBKB's management moved to channel 7. The station became WLS-TV in 1968, after WLS-A ...

WLS, like the other ABC owned-and-operated stations, adopted the Eyewitness News format in the late 1960s after it became a hit at flagship WABC-TV in New York. Fahey Flynn, a local broadcaster known for his bow ties, and Joel Daly served as the anchormen of the newscasts from the late 1960s until the early 1980s. For much of the 1970s and 1980s, it waged a spirited battle for second place in the Chicago news ratings with WMAQ-TV. In 1983, two big changes came to WLS. First, it commissioned Frank Gari to write an updated version of th ...

The Chicago–Joliet–Naperville–Gary, Indiana–Kenosha, Wisconsin Consolidated Metropolitan Statistical Area had 9,157,540 inhabitants during the 2000 census. The publisher of the Chicago Tribune, Colonel Robert R. McCormick, was an inveterate civic booster. In his view, Chicagoland was the vast region in the center of the country, with Chicago as its economic and cultural capital. In many ways, what McCormick envisioned as Chicagoland is now described by the term flyover country. The term is often used by advertisers ("See your Chicagoland Ford dealer") or by weathercasters ("A major snowstorm is expected in the Chicagoland area"). It would rarely be used outside the area, ho ...

WBBM traces its history to 1940, when Balaban & Katz, a subsidiary of Paramount Pictures, opened experimental station W9XBK. Balaban & Katz was already well known for owning several theaters in Chicago. In 1943, it received a commercial license as WBKB-TV (meaning Balaban and Katz Broadcasting) on channel 4, the first commercial station outside the Eastern Time Zone. Six years later, it became Chicago's CBS affiliate. Balaban & Katz was renamed United Paramount Theatres (UPT) in 1950 after ...

As WBKB, it played an indirect role in the demise of the DuMont Television Network. Paramount owned a stake in DuMont, and the FCC considered WBKB a DuMont owned and operated station even though WGN-TV was Chicago's DuMont affiliate. Paramount also owned KTLA in Los Angeles. As DuMont already owned WABD (now WNYW-TV) in New York, WTTG in Washington and WDTV in Pittsburgh, the FCC's decision meant DuMont couldn't acquire any more stations. Ironically, due to a series of mergers over the years, the former WDTV, now KDKA-TV, is also a CBS O&O. In 1960, WBBM was the site of the first televised presidential debate ...
