Banu Hashim (Arabic: بنو هاشم) is a clan in the Quraish tribe. Muhammad was a member of this clan; his great-grandfather was Hashim for whom the clan is named. Members of this clan are also called Hashemites. The Banu Hashim were one of the most important clans in the Quraish tribe at the time of Muhammad's birth, but it was not one of the richest. Aminah bint Wahab: Encyclopedia - Shaiba ibn Hashim

His name was Shaiba ibn Hashim, but he became known as Abd-al-Muttalib ibn Hashim. His father was Hashim ibn Abd al-Manaf and his mother was Salma bint Amr of the tribe of an-Najjar. When his father died, his uncle Muttalib ibn Abd al-Manaf succeeded his father. When Muttalib died, Shaiba succeeded him as the chief of the Banu Hashim clan.     Shia view of the Sahaba - Ahl al-Bayt. While Sunni accept the testimony of all Sahaba as a authenticated part of the chain of narrators in a hadith, without scrutinizing them, Shia do that only for the Ahl al-Bayt. This is due to that Shia believes them to be thoroughly cleansed from all sin, as described in hadith of the Cloak. Others are scrutinizied for reliability.
