Amalgam: Encyclopedia II - Amalgam - Mining

Mercury amalgams have been used in the gold and silver mining process due to the ease with which mercury will amalgamate with them. After all the usable metal had been extracted from the ore, mercury was poured down a long copper trough which formed a thin coating of mercury on the surface. The waste ore was then poured down the trough, and any gold in the waste amalgamated with the mercury. This coating was occasionally scraped off and distilled to remove the mercury, leaving behind fairly high purity gold. The Spanish Empire transported mercury from Almaden across the Atlantic to supply the silv ...

Amalgam: Encyclopedia - Amalgam Comics

Amalgam Comics was a (more-or-less fictional) American comic book publisher, a collaboration between Marvel Comics and DC Comics, in which the two comic book publishers merged their characters to create new ones (e.g. DC Comics' Batman and Marvel's Wolverine became the Amalgam character Dark Claw). These characters first appeared in a series of twelve comic books which were published in 1996, following the Marvel vs DC miniseries. A second set (of another twelve comic books) followed a year later. Amalgam Comics - ...

Amalgam: : Spiritual Health – Amalgam from an homeopathic view

There are 40 to 60 tons of amalgam in the teeth of Sweden's population. About 50 percent of this is mercury. Everyone agrees that mercury is not good for the environment or for health, but still a majority of people have amalgam in their teeths. The homeopath Lars Lonnerud knows what mercury does to us and how we can have it removed without getting sick.

Amalgam: Encyclopedia II - Dental fillings - Amalgam

Amalgam fillings are an alloy of mercury (from 43% to 54%) along with silver, tin, and copper. Mercury-based fillings were apparently first used by French dentists in the 1810s. They continue to be used in some countries because of their hardness and durability and because they are inexpensive. Mercury vapor is toxic, and the use of amalgam fillings is therefore controversial, as the fillings do emit mercury as a minute amount of vapor. Some government agencies, including the UN's World Health Organization and Centers for Disease Cont ...

Amalgam: Encyclopedia II - Amalgam - Dentistry

For centuries dentists have been cleaning out decay and creating dental fillings, using filling material such as stone chips, resin, cork, turpentine, gum, lead and gold leaf. The renowned physician Ambroise Paré (1510 – 1590) used lead or cork to fill teeth. Amalgams were the first true standard filling material. Mercury amalgams were used in dentistry because they were cheap, easy to use, durable, and are regarded as safe. They were made by mixing approximately equal measures of mercury and an alloy of ...

Amalgam: Encyclopedia II - Dental amalgam controversy - Amalgams and Alternative Medicine

Dental amalgams have been suspected by some medical practitioners, particularly of integrative or alternative medicine, of causing many physical and/or psychological problems. They reason that, since mercury is poisonous, so must be anything in the mouth which contains and releases mercury; hence, that amalgams in the mouth are poisonous. While amalgam fillings are universally regarded as hazardous waste outside the mouth, after removal, and as hazardous material before insertion into the mouth, the dispute rests o ...

Amalgam: Encyclopedia II - Dental amalgam controversy - Appearance

One obvious disadvantage of using amalgams for fillings is they look unattractive. The material is black (silver if an abrasive toothpaste is used) and can clearly be seen on, and sometimes behind, a tooth. For this reason alone, amalgam fillings are seldom used in the front teeth. There are, however, still dentists who use them in the back teeth, especially since dental amalgams are generally considered to be somewhat tougher wearing than most composite fillings. An advantage of amalgam fillings is the antiseptic properties inherent in them ...

Amalgam: Encyclopedia II - Dental amalgam controversy - Regulation

This change in the amalgam formula was introduced without having to undergo FDA approval because amalgams are classified as a device, not a substance. Device modification does not need FDA approval. As far as the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations is concerned amalgams are a prosthetic device. Amalgam Alloy, (a) Identification. An amalgam alloy is a device that consists of a metallic substance intended to be mixed with mercury to form filling material for treatment of dental caries. (b) Classification. Class II (21 CFR 872.3050 (2001)). This prevented amalgams from undergoing the testing which had ...

In 1895 the multitude of formulas for making amalgam were standardised: The gamma-2-phase amalgams contain approximately equal parts 50% of liquid mercury and 50% of an alloy powder containing: > 65% silver (Ag) < 29% tin (Sn) < 6% copper (Cu) < 2% zinc (Zn) < 3% mercury (Hg) Around 1970, the ingredients changed f ...

Amalgam: Encyclopedia II - Amalgam Comics - Fictional origin

The two comic universes came together when the incarnations of their respective universes (referred to as "the Brothers") became aware of each other after aeons of slumber. Amalgam: Encyclopedia II - Dental amalgam controversy - History of controversy

In 1840 the only official dentist organisation in existence, the American Society of Dental Surgeons, which had promoted mercury amalgams since its inception, had members sign a mandatory pledge promising not to use mercury fillings because of fear of mercury poisoning in patients and dentists. It must be noted that in 1840 dentists mixed the amalgam themselves in their office, making the office a source of poisonous levels of mercury. The American Society of Dental Surgeons however pointed out that amalgams are toxic in the mouth and ...

Amalgam: Encyclopedia II - Avro - Amalgamation

When the company was absorbed into Hawker Siddeley Aviation in July 1963 the Avro name seemed to have disappeared forever but the brand had such a strong heritage appeal that the marketing name "Avro RJ" (regional jet) was applied to the British Aerospace 146 from 1994 to 2001. The BAe ATP (Advanced Turbo Prop) design evolved from the Avro 748 and examples continue in use on shorter, mainly domestic, scheduled air services. A few Avro 504, Tutors, Ansons and Lancasters are lovingly maintained in flying condition as reminders of the he ...

Amalgam: Encyclopedia II - Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America - Founding

The Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America—also known as "ACWA" or simply "the Amalgamated"—formed in 1914 as a result of the revolt of the urban locals against the conservative AFL affiliate the United Garment Workers. The roots of this conflict date back to the general strike of Chicago, when a spontaneous strike by a handful of women workers led to a citywide strike of 45,000 garment workers in 1910, That strike was a bitter one and pitted the strikers against not only ...

Amalgam: Encyclopedia II - Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America - Growth

The Amalgamated solidified its gains and extended its power in Chicago through a series of strikes in the last half of the 1910s. The Amalgamated found it harder, on the other hand, to make gains in Baltimore, where it was able to sign an agreement with one of the largest manufacturers that, like HSM in Chicago, sought labor peace, it found itself at odds with an unusual alliance of UGW locals, the corrupt head of the Baltimore Federation of Labor, and the Industrial Workers of the World, who undermined the Amalgamated's strikes and attacked ...
