alternative lifestyle: Alternative Health Dictionary on Hippocrates health program

Hippocrates health program (Hippocrates program): Variation of Nature Cure developed by wholistic health educator Dr. Ann Wigmore (1904-1994), author of Be Your Own Doctor, The Healing Power Within, The Hippocrates Diet and Health Program, Hippocrates Live Food Program, Recipes for Longer Life, The Sprouting Book, The Wheatgrass Book, and Why Suffer?. Wigmore founded the Hippocrates Health Institute in 1957.

The Hippocrates program encompasses brushing the skin, deep breathing, enemas, food combining, the Hippocrates Diet (see Living Foods Lifestyle), and exercises such as squatting. According to its theory, integration of body/mind/spirit is central to health. In Belief: All There Is (1991), Brian R. Clement, codirector of the Hippocrates Health Institute, in West Palm Beach, Florida, asserted: [B]elief can bring you anything that you desire (p. 41). He further stated that death is a sham (p. 67).

alternative lifestyle: Encyclopedia II - Pro-ana - Overview

Pro-ana websites were first developed to counter the many support websites which encourage recovery from anorexia. Many anorexics believed that the desire to achieve a slim figure was not a mental illness, but an alternative lifestyle. Doctors who treat anorexia see pro-ana as a life-threatening danger to current and potential anorexics. A common assumption is that these sites are actively trying to recruit new anorexics, but this is almost never the case. Some pro-ana websites are fairly exclusive; others always welcome new members i ...

alternative lifestyle: Encyclopedia II - Water Opossum - Aquatic adaptations

The water opossum has several adaptations for its watery lifestyle. It has short, dense fur which is water-repellent. The broad hindfeet are webbed and are used for propulsion through water, moving with alternate strokes. They are symmetrical as well, which distributes force equally along both borders of the webbing; this increases the efficiency of the water opossum's movement through the water. The yapok's long tail aids its swimming as well. Being a marsupial and at the same time an aquatic animal, the water opossum has evolved a w ...

The city of Vancouver has developed a reputation as tolerant city that is open to social experimentation and alternative lifestyles as well as being willing to explore alternative drug policies. The city has adopted a Four Pillars Drug Strategy, which combines harm reduction (e.g. needle exchanges, supervised injection sites) with treatment, enforcement, and prevention. The strategy is largely a response to endemic HIV and hepatitis C among injection drug users in the city's Downtown Eastside neighbourhood. The area is characterized by entre ...

alternative lifestyle: Encyclopedia II - Army ant - Life-cycle

Eciton army ants have a bi-phasic lifestyle where they alternate between a nomadic phase and a stationary stage. In the stationary or statary phase ('statary' is an old English word meaning "to stand in place"), which lasts about three weeks, the ants remain in the same location every night. They make a nest out of their own bodies, protecting the queen and her eggs in the middle. This temporary home is known as a bivouac. In the nomadic phase the ants move their entire colony to a new loc ...

alternative lifestyle: Encyclopedia II - Zoophilia - Social community

Whether there is such a thing as a "zoophile community", in the same sense as the gay community or any other alternative lifestyle communities, is a controversial question. Some zoophiles point to the number and quality of computerized meeting-places in which zoophiles can meet and socialize, the manner in which this extends to offline social networks, and the trend of social and cultural evolution of community consensus over time, or use the term to imply "the community of zoophiles in general". Others point to the differing viewpoints and ...

alternative lifestyle: Encyclopedia II - Haight-Ashbury San Francisco California - Present-day Haight-Ashbury

Today the district has lost little of its status as a center of alternative lifestyles, though much has changed. The area still maintains a lot of its bohemian atmosphere, it has become a major tourist attraction and has experienced the effects of gentrification to some degree. Perhaps the best illustration of the district's slide into the mainstream is the presence of a Gap store, a major international retailer that (ironically) started in San Francisco in the late 60's, now fell to mixed reviews by the city's trendy inhabitants. Though the ...

alternative lifestyle: Encyclopedia II - Neoism - History

In 1979, Neoism grew out of the mail art network, particularly those parts of mail art that emphasized - rather than the exchange of artwork - alternative lifestyles, pranks, practical jokes, the use of pseudonyms and experimentation with identity. Centered around the idea of the "open pop star" or multiple persona Monty Cantsin in Montreal, Canada and Baltimore, USA, Neoism quickly spread to other places in America, Europe and Australia and involved up to two dozens of Neoists. Until the late 1980s and before the mass availability of ...

alternative lifestyle: Encyclopedia II - Implications of peak oil - Market solution

A market solution is based on the belief that the rise of oil prices due to scarcity would stimulate investment in oil replacement technologies and/or more efficient oil extraction technologies and/or an increase in productivity. The economic challenge within an environment of decreasing energy supplies is that research into alternative energy sources currently relies upon fossil fuels for development. Critics argue that if conventional oil and natural gas become more expensive, alternative energy source development and increased tech ...

alternative lifestyle: Alternative Health Dictionary III on Polarity Therapy

Polarity Therapy

Developed by Dr. Randolph Stone, DO, DC, ND (1890-1981), over the course of his career as an osteopathic physician, chiropractor, and naturopath.

Polarity Therapy has been defined as a natural health care system based upon universal principles of energy. It assumes that illness is caused by an imbalance or block in the bipolar energy field. The interrelation of the three principles of attraction, repulsion, and neutrality are viewed as the basis for every aspect and phenomena of life, including one's experience of health, wellness, and disease.

The application of Polarity Therapy attempts to realign balance and recharge the overall level of energy through energetic touch, energetic diet, energetic exercise, and lifestyle education.

alternative lifestyle: Parapsychology Dictionary on Age of Aquarius

Age of Aquarius:

The alleged two-thousand year long period in human history marked by enlightenment, love, and profound peace heralded by the ascension of the constellation of Aquarius into 'the house of the Sun' in "astrology".

Astrologers through out history have disputed the time frame in which this period of universal enlightenment is set to begin, with most estimates falling between 1904 and 2160 AD. The term received its greatest popularity during the 1960s when spiritual exploration and alternative lifestyles became fashionable in society because of the political and social unrest of the time. Many people with a New Age perspective also adopt complementary and alternative medicine. Some rely on New Age related treatments exclusively, while others use them in combination with conventional medicine. Some techniques worthy of mention are herbal medicine, Ayurveda, acupuncture, homeopathy, iridology, auras and the ...

alternative lifestyle: Encyclopedia II - Hermann Göring - In fiction

In Philip José Farmer's Riverworld, a reincarnated Göring becomes a missionary for the Church of the Second Chance, a pacifist religion. Philip K Dick's 1962 science-fiction alternate history novel The Man in the High Castle mentions Göring, who, by 1962 is aging, morbidly obese, and the subject of much rumor and speculation regarding his indulgent lifestyle (which is seen by some as akin to that of a corrupt Roman emperor). alternative lifestyle: Encyclopedia II - Pedophile activism - Brief history of modern pedophile activism

There have been varying degrees of pedophile activism since the 1970s that can be traced to the social changes that occurred during both the 1960s and 70s. Encouraged by the increased tolerance for minorities and alternative lifestyles, underground pedophile groups began to go public in an effort to garner greater social acceptance (Schuijer, 1990). In the 1970s, most organized pedophile activity was centered in the Netherlands and to a lesser degree in Western Europe. [citation needed]Here, a number of researchers, ...

alternative lifestyle: Natural Health Dictionary II on Naturopathy

Naturopathy:

Naturopathy is a system of healing, originating from Europe, that views disease as a manifestation of alterations in the processes by which the body naturally heals itself. It emphasizes health restoration as well as disease treatment.

The term “naturopathy” literally translates as “nature disease.” Today naturopathy, or naturopathic medicine, is practiced throughout Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and the United States. There are six principles that form the basis of naturopathic practice in North America (not all are unique to naturopathy):

1. The healing power of nature

2. Identification and treatment of the cause of disease

3. The concept of “first do no harm”

4. The doctor as teacher

5. Treatment of the whole person

6. Prevention

The core modalities supporting these principles include diet modification and nutritional supplements, herbal medicine, acupuncture and Chinese medicine, hydrotherapy, massage and joint manipulation, and lifestyle counseling. Treatment protocols combine what the practitioner deems to be the most suitable therapies for the individual patient.

alternative lifestyle: Ayurveda Ayurvedic Dictionary on Know yourself

Your personal constitution, which is your individual metabolic make-up, helps determine how your mind and body will instinctively react when confronted with and how much effect any stimulus, as a specific taste or emotion, will have on you. This inborn metabolic pattern is called Prakriti. The personality traits most prized or the qualities disliked all equally arise from these tendencies inherent in your prakriti.

Determined by the doshic state of your parents at the time of your conception, your constitution is influenced by your parents' genetics also. And once set along with the tendencies, it cannot be altered. However, one can learn to adjust so as to reduce distortions, prevent imbalances and treat them when necessary. Also learn the whys and hows of dealing with others. Knowing your own constitution thus allows you to understand the workings of your mind and body better, thereby allowing greater control over the traits through planned and adequate changes incorporated into your lifestyle.
