The Flying Tigers were integrated into the USAAF as the 23rd Fighter Group. The unit continued to fly P-40s (of newer models) until the end of the war, racking up a high kill-to-loss ratio.
The 57th Fighter Group, which also operated in the MTO, was equipped with the Curtiss fighter until early 1944, during which time they were credited with at least 140 air-to-air kills. It was the 57th that took part in the "Palm Sunday Massacre" which took place on April ...

Steamboy - Cat's Cradle.
There are elements that bear a certain similarity to Kurt Vonnegut's 1964 Cat's Cradle, such as a respected scientist who helps develop a new and potentially dangerous source of power, the transgenerational relay of techno-political responsibility, an artificial fuel which is an alternative structure of water (and which also catalyzes the molecules of liquid water into a solid ice), and a fictional island as a Deus ex machina.

| | | | alternative history: Encyclopedia II - Steamboy - Thematic StyleIn keeping with the Steampunk subgenre of science fiction, the film employs alternative history: it is set in a factual 19th-century context, yet it features several geopolitical and industrial circumstances that developed differently or at a different pace, sometimes as a result of advanced technological paradigms that were accomplished via the science already present in the given zeitgeist.
As evidenced by one of the early production sketches, Steamboy was envisioned as an amalgam between a Frank Reade Scientific Romance; a s ...

| | | | | | alternative history: Encyclopedia II - History - History and prehistoryTraditionally the study of history was limited to the written word. However with the rise of academic professionalism and the creation of new scientific fields in the 19th and 20th centuries came a flood of new information that challenged this notion — archaeology, anthropology and other social sciences were providing new information and even theories about human history. Some traditional historians questioned whether these new studies were really history, since they were not limited to the written word. A new term, prehistory, was coined, to encompass the results of these new fields where they yeilded information abou ...

It was also at this time that Edward became the first British monarch to fly in an aeroplane, when he flew from Sandringham to London for his Accession Council.
It was now becoming clear that the new King wished to marry Mrs Simpson, especially when divorc ...

| | | | alternative history: Encyclopedia II - Edward VIII of the United Kingdom - AbdicationOn November 16, 1936, Edward met with Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin at Fort Belvedere and expressed his desire to marry Wallis Simpson when she became free to do so. The Prime Minister responded by presenting the King with three choices: he could give up the idea of marriage; marry Wallis against his ministers' wishes; or abdicate. By marrying against the advice of his ministers, it was likely that he would cause the government to resign, prompting a constitutional crisis. The Pri ...
