Alpha course: Encyclopedia II - Newfrontiers - History

Newfrontiers has its roots in the charismatic movement and was one of several groups that were influenced by a group of men gathered by Arthur Wallis. Newfrontiers itself began out of the ministry of leader Terry Virgo who had been somewhat disillusioned as a young Christian by his experiences of church. As a pastor of a church on an estate in Seaford in the UK, he spoke of building a church that was biblical both in its doctrine and in its experience. As friends and others began to ask for his help both in renewing existing churches and in starting new ones a family of churches began to gather into ever clos ...

Alpha course: Encyclopedia II - Holy Trinity Brompton Church - History

Prior to the construction of Holy Trinity Brompton, the present site was a part of the large parish of Kensington which was served only by the nearby St Mary Abbots church. In the early 1820's the area was in the midst of a substantial population increase so a decision was taken to purchase land and construct a new church. After three years of construction the church was consecrated on 6 June 1829 as Holy Trinity Brompton. The same building stands today, although having been considerably modified. At some point a portion of HTB's land ...

Alpha course: Encyclopedia II - Holy Trinity Brompton Church - Alpha and HTB

The Alpha course was founded by clergy at HTB who over a period of twenty years kept adapting the programme in accordance with feedback until in the early 1990s the Alpha course started gaining worldwide attention. As Alpha grew it became the main focus for HTB as it sought to support Alpha's spread and growth. Today this involves the production of advertising material and course material such as videos, books and tapes for each Alpha session and leader training material. Alpha is now run as a separate enterprise with separate fundraising an ...

Alpha course: Encyclopedia II - Holy Trinity Brompton Church - Pastoral Care

In order to address the problem of how to give pastoral care to such a large congregation as well as provide a means for new people to become a part of the church, HTB uses the Pastorate model. Pastorates consist of 20-50 people who, through meeting at least once a fortnight, can form strong friendships and support each other in care as well as developing individual gifts and ministries. HTB has quite a transient congregation caused in part by its location in London, a city which itself has quite a transient population, that HT ...

Alpha course: Encyclopedia II - Holy Trinity Brompton Church - Worship

HTB conducts five services on a Sunday: two as Communion family services; two being informal in nature centring on a long period of Worship in the form of singing, and a long talk; and one following a more traditional Church of England Liturgy. On average, attendance at the five Sunday services totals 3,100. HTB does not run any regular services on any other days, instead running various prayer meetings, ...

Alpha course: Encyclopedia II - Newfrontiers - Beliefs and distinctives

Newfrontiers today remains an evangelical group which largely teaches reformed theology but remains modern and informal in their worship style. Worship often takes the form of soft rock and even on occasion dance/drum and bass music. The group believes in the modern availability of spiritual gifts including apostolic ministry. This is why a Newfrontiers slogan is "Changing the expression of Christianity around the world". The Newfrontiers approach to church and the format of services has a reputation for being unconventional and infor ...

Alpha course: Encyclopedia II - Alpha course - Critics

The Alpha course has been criticised for a Charismatic emphasis. Some churches have chosen to teach a modified version which avoids the subject of the Holy Spirit. Some churches have found that the expectations of Alpha graduates caused friction with more established members of the congregation. More conservative critics (especially from a Reformed and Evangelical perspective) have complained that the course does not adequately define sin and therefore does not adequately explain the reason for Jesus' death and resurrection. The Christianity Explo ...

Alpha course: Encyclopedia II - Alpha course - History

Alpha began at Holy Trinity Brompton Church, an Anglican church in London. It started as a course for church members on the basics of the Christian faith, but then began to be used as an introduction for those interested in the faith. In 1990 Nicky Gumbel, at that time a curate (assistant minister) at Holy Trinity took over the running of the course and oversaw its expansion. In 2005, over 30,000 courses are offered in more than 152 countries, and in many Christian denominations. By 2005 it was reported that over 7 million people ...

Alpha course: Encyclopedia II - Alpha course - Praise

The Alpha course has attracted praise as a technique for spreading an understanding of the basics of the Christian faith. Although begun in the Anglican church, it has subsequently been used by a variety of denominations and groups. It operates through unpressurised (albeit directed) discussion in a non-threatening environment. Alpha is designed to provide an introduction to the Christian faith to those who may not k ...
