Ali Khamenei: Encyclopedia II - Ruhollah Khomeini - Political thought and legacy

Throughout his many writings and speeches, Khomeini consistently promoted his vision of a theocratic Islamic society, guided by the morality and ethics of the clergy. He believed in a free market economy, with respect for private ownership, and that businesses and corporations should be encouraged to contribute to religious charitable foundations which would benefit the poor. He advised against allowing wealthy individuals to participate in the government, and that politicians should follow his example ...

Ali Khamenei: Encyclopedia II - East Azarbaijan Province - History and Culture

East Azarbaijan is one of the more archaic territories in Iran. It contains Anshan, the original capital of the Elamites, and the nucleus of Persian Empire. During the reign of Alexander of Macedon in Iran (331 BCE), a warrior known as Attorpat led a revolt in this area, then a territory of the Medes, and thereafter it was called Attorpatkan. Since then this vicinity has been known as Azarabadegan, Azarbadgan and Azarbayjan. Islamic researchers proclaim that the birth of the prophet Zoroaster was in this ar ...

Ali Khamenei: Encyclopedia II - Iran's nuclear program - Background

The foundations for Iran's nuclear program were laid in the 1960s under auspices of the U.S. within the framework of bilateral agreements between the two countries. In 1967 the Tehran Nuclear Research Center (TNRC) was built and run by the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI). The TNRC was equipped with a US supplied 5-megawatt nuclear research reactor. Iran signed and ratified the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in 1968. With the establishment of Iran's atomic agency and the NPT in place plans were drawn by Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi (Iran's monarch) to construct up to 23 nuclear power stations a ...

Ali Khamenei: Encyclopedia II - President of Iran - Role in the state

In contrast with most republics, the effective head of Iran's political establishment is not the president, but rather the Supreme Leader, who is a religious figure selected by an Assembly of Experts. For instance, Ruhollah Khomeini, who is perhaps the most famous Iranian leader in the West, was never president (incidentally, Ayatollah was not his first name, but a title of respect). Despite this, Iran's president fulfills many of the classical functions of a head of state, such as accepting the credentials of ambassadors. Sinc ...

Ali Khamenei: Encyclopedia II - Iran and weapons of mass destruction - Nuclear weapons

The Islamic Republic of Iran's nuclear program goes back several decades. However, in recent years, due to global political changes Iran is finding its program under severe scrutiny and even facing charges of developing a nuclear weapon capability. Iran had maintained that the purpose of its nuclear program was the generation of power; any other use being a violation of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, of which it is a signatory, as well as being against Iranian religious principles. The U.S. had insisted late in 2003 that Tehran ...
