Al Spalding: Encyclopedia - Baseball object

A baseball is a ball used primarily in the sport of the same name, baseball. It is generally approximately 9 inches (23 cm) nor more than 9 1/4 inches in circumference, and 5 ounces (142 g) in weight, sometimes balls may be used in children's leagues. Construction varies. Generally the core of the ball is cork, rubber, or a mixture of the two, and is sometimes layered. Around that are various linear materials including yarn and twine, sometimes wool is used. A leather cover is put on, in two pieces, and stitched together using 108 sti ...

Robert Lee Caruthers (nickname Parisian Bob) (born January 5, 1864 in Memphis, Tennessee - died August 5, 1911 in Peoria, Illinois) was a pitcher who had a nine year career. He played for the St. Louis Browns and the Brooklyn Bridegrooms & Grooms. Caruthers is perhaps one of the most deserving people who should be in the HOF but isn't. He has 218 wins and 98 losses making his winning percentage 5th all time behind HOFs Al Spalding and Whitey Ford and players Spud Chandler and Dave Foutz]]. He led the American Association in wins i

Al Spalding: Encyclopedia II - Origins of baseball - Did Abner Doubleday invent baseball?

Contrary to a once-widely promoted theory that Abner Doubleday invented baseball (presumably in 1839), there is no evidence that he did other than the testimony of one man decades after the fact. Doubleday, in fact, never claimed that he did. The legend of Doubleday’s invention was itself an invention of Al Spalding, a former star pitcher who had become a sporting goods manufacturer. Throughout the second half of the 19th century, debates raged over the origins of baseball. To end the arguments and speculation, Spalding organized a panel i ...

Al Spalding: Encyclopedia II - Chicago Cubs - Franchise History

Chicago Cubs - White Stockings. The success and fame of the Cincinnati Red Stockings of 1869, baseball's first openly professional team, led to a minor explosion of openly professional teams in 1870, each with the singular goal of defeating the Red Stockings. A number of them adopted variants on the name and colors, and it happens that the Chicagos adopted white as their primary color. After a summer of individually arranged contests among the various teams, the time was right for the organization of the first profe ...

Al Spalding: Encyclopedia II - Origins of baseball - Before 1845

The evolution of the game which became modern baseball prior to 1845 is unclear. The Knickerbocker Rules describe a game that people had been playing for some time. But exactly how long is uncertain, as is the question of how that game developed. Early theorists tended to fall into two camps. One group, mostly English, asserted that baseball evolved from a game of English origin (probably rounders), while the other group, almost entirely American, argued that baseball was an American invention (perhaps derived from the game of one ol' ...

Al Spalding: Encyclopedia II - Origins of baseball - After 1845

In 1857, 25 Northeastern clubs sent delegates and standardized the rules. In 1858, they formed the first baseball league, the National Association of Base Ball Players. The league started giving games to the public and charged an admission. During the American Civil War, soldiers from the Northeast, where baseball was flourishing, spread the game all over the country. After the war ended, baseball had more than 100 clubs. In 1869, the world's first openly professional baseball team formed. All previous players were at least theoretically amateur and unpaid. The Cincinnati Red Stockings recruited the best pl ...
