Akutagawa Ryunosuke: Encyclopedia II - Kappa mythical creature - Behavior
Kappa are mischievous troublemakers. Their pranks range from the relatively innocent, such as loudly passing gas or looking up women's kimonos, to the more troublesome, such as stealing crops, kidnapping children, or raping women. In fact, small children comprise one of the gluttonous kappa's favorite meals, though they will eat adults as well. They feed on these hapless victims by sucking out the entrails (or blood, liver, or "life force", depending on the legend) through the anus. Even today, signs warning about kappa appear by bodies of w ...

The University of Tokyo (東京大学; Tōkyō Daigaku, abbreviated as 東大 Tōdai) is generally ranked as Japan's most prestigious university, as well as a leading university in Asia. Akutagawa Ryunosuke: Encyclopedia II - Osamu Dazai - Biography

Dazai was born Shuji Tsushima (津島修治), the eighth surviving child of a wealthy landowner in Tsugaru, a remote corner of Japan at the northern tip of Tōhoku. An excellent student at school and an able writer even then, his life only started to change when his idol writer Akutagawa Ryunosuke committed suicide in 1927. Shuji started to neglect his studies, spending his allowance on clothes, booze and geisha and dabbling with Marxism, at the time heavily suppressed by the government. On December 10, 1929, the night before year-end ...

Akutagawa Ryunosuke: Encyclopedia II - Japanese literature - History

Japanese Literature is generally divided into three main periods: Ancient, Medieval, and Modern. Japanese literature - Ancient Literature pre-8th Century. With the introduction of kanji (Chinese characters) from the Asian mainland, writing became possible. Before this there had been no native writing system. The only literary language was classical Chinese to begin with; later, Chinese characters were adapted to write Japanese, creating what is known as the man'yōgana, the earliest form of kana, or syllab ...

Akutagawa Ryunosuke: Encyclopedia II - Kappa mythical creature - Kappa in popular culture

Kappa are popular figures in Japanese animation, children's toys, and literature. Modern depictions make them much less monstrous, showing them instead as cute, cartoonish figures. A notable literary appearance is the short story "Kappa" by Akutagawa Ryunosuke. They appear in a more sinister form as the organization of INKlings in Haruki Murakami's Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World. One of comic artist Shigeru Mizuki's most popular characters is Sanpei, the Kappa (カッパの三平), who starred a long running co ...

Akutagawa Ryunosuke: Encyclopedia II - Osamu Dazai - Works

Among his most important works are No Longer Human, The Setting Sun, Blue Bamboo (Dazai's imaginative retelling of Chinese and Japanese folktales), Self-Portraits (a collection of short stories), Travels in Tsugaru, as well as Melos, Run! (走れメロス). Dazai's works are characterized by a profound pessimism, not surprising from an author who, after several unsuccessful attempts, eventually killed himself days before he turned 39. In his novels the main characters similarly consider suicid ...

Akutagawa Ryunosuke: Encyclopedia II - Kappa mythical creature - Appearance

Most depictions show kappa as child-sized humanoids, though their bodies are often more like those of monkeys or frogs than human beings. Some descriptions say their faces are apelike, while others show them with beaked visages more like those of tortoises or with duck beaks. Pictures usually show kappa with thick shells and scaly skin that ranges in color from green to yellow or blue. Kappa inhabit the ponds and rivers of Japan and have various features to aid them in this environment, such as webbed hands and feet. They are sometime ...
