Mahabharata sometimes figures the Uttarakuru as a fairy land. It is stated to be the ultimate abode of the blessed souls. The souls of the blessed ones and the Kshatriyas go to Uttarakuru after death (MBH 9/5/36-37; MBH 13/54). Puranic cosmography divides our earth into seven concentric islands, viz.
