Agnosticism: Encyclopedia - Agnosticism

Agnosticism is the philosophical view that the truth values of certain claims—particularly theological claims regarding the existence of God, gods, or deities—are unknown, inherently unknowable, or incoherent, and therefore, (some agnostics may go as far to say) irrelevant to life. The term and the related agnostic were coined by Thomas Henry Huxley in 1869, and are also used to describe those who are unconvinced or noncommittal about the existence of deities as well as other matters of religion. The word agnostic comes fro ...

Agnosticism: Theosophy Dictionary on Agnosticism

Agnosticism (from Greek a not + gnostos known)

The mental attitude denying the possibility of the real knowledge of truth and hence of the ultimate or fundamental nature of the universe. The term was coined by T. H. Huxley to denote his own attitude, in contrast to Gnosticism which implies the possibility of knowing truth and the inner and invisible realities of the universe. It differs from atheism in not denying the existence of God or cosmic divinities.

Agnosticism: Scepticism in Ancient Vedic Literature

We want to believe in the existence of a higher agency but at the same time refuse to accept it.

We take pride in our scepticism. Scepticism is a philosophical conception. Consistent scepticism is close to agnosticism. As doctrine we find the resonance of scepticism even in Vedic literature. In Greece it emerged as a reaction to the preceding philosophical systems which had tried to explain the sensual world by means of contemplative arguments and in so doing had often displayed inherent contradictions.

Agnosticism: Encyclopedia - Weak agnosticism

Weak agnosticism, or empirical agnosticism (also negative agnosticism), is the belief that the existence or nonexistence of deities is currently unknown, but is not necessarily unknowable. Weak agnosticism is in contrast to strong agnosticism, in which the agnostic believes that the existence of any gods is not only unknown, but is also unknowable to humanity. Neither type of agnosticism is fully irreconcilable with theism (belief in a deity or deities) nor strong atheism. A weak agnostic who also considers themse ...

Agnosticism: Encyclopedia II - Agnosticism - Some philosophical opinions

Among the most famous agnostics (in the original sense) have been Robert G. Ingersoll, Thomas Henry Huxley, Charles Darwin, and Bertrand Russell. Some have argued from the works of David Hume, especially Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion, that he was an agnostic, but this remains subject to debate. Agnosticism - Thomas Henry Huxley. Agnostic views are as old as philosophical skepticism, but the terms agnostic and agnosticism were created by Huxley to sum up his thoughts on contemporary developme ...

Agnosticism: Encyclopedia - Apathetic agnosticism

Apathetic Agnosticism, in its most widely acknowledged form, is a theological position put forward by John Tyrrell in 1965. Apathetic Agnosticism differs from Ignosticism, in that while Ignostics are apathetic about the question of God, Apathetic Agnostics are apathetic about the answer, since there is no way to satisfactorily answer the question. The position follows that, regardless of whether or not a god or gods exist, it does not affect us, or the human conditio ...

Agnosticism: New Age Spirituality Dictionary on Agnosticism

Agnosticism

The claim that no one has knowledge of God or the origin of the universe. Some agnostics make the claim on a personal level, while allowing that such knowledge may exist but has never been known by themselves.

Others assert that such knowledge cannot be had by anyone. Agnostics avoid the charge of dogmatic atheism by acknowledging the theoretical possibility of GodÕs existence. Yet virtually all live as if the non-existence of God was an established fact, and are thus practical atheists.

Agnosticism: Encyclopedia - Universist movement

The Universist Movement refers to a worldwide religious movement of people who apply reason and experience to questions concerning human existence, derive inspiration from uncertainty in the human situation, and deny the validity of revelation, faith, and dogma. Agnosticism: Encyclopedia - Polytheism

Polytheism is belief in, or worship of, multiple gods or divinities. The word comes from the Greek words poly+theoi, literally "many gods." Most ancient religions were polytheistic, holding to pantheons of traditional deities, often accumulated over centuries of cultural interchange and experience. The belief in many gods does not preclude the belief in an all- powerful all-knowing supreme being. In polytheistic belief systems, gods are conceived as complex personages of greater or lesser status, with individual skills, ...

Agnosticism: Encyclopedia - Theism

Theism is the belief in one or more gods or goddesses. More specifically, it may also mean the belief in God, a god, or gods, who is/are actively involved in maintaining the Universe. This secondary meaning is shown in context to other beliefs concerning the divine below. The term is attested in English from 1678, and was probably coined to contrast with atheism attested from ca. 1587 (see t ...

Agnosticism: Encyclopedia - Deism

Historical and modern Deism is defined by the view that reason, rather than revelation or tradition, should be the basis of belief in God. Deists reject both organized and revealed religion and maintain that reason is the essential element in all knowledge. For a "rational basis for religion" they refer to the cosmological argument (first cause argument), the teleological argument (argument from design), and other aspects of what was called natural religion. Deism has become identified with the classical belief that God created ...

Agnosticism: Encyclopedia - Apatheism

Apatheism is a portmanteau (a haplology combining apathy with either atheist or theist) for the position that God may exist but is of no real importance to one's daily life. It was used by columnist Jonathan Rauch in The Atlantic Monthly in 2003. There is also a satiric web page with the title "The Church of Apatheism". There are also instances of the term being used on message boards and other Internet venues as early as July 2000. Apatheism is not precisely synonymous to atheism, but rather holds that the question of whether or not God exists may be meaningful ...

Agnosticism: Encyclopedia - Agnostic theism

Agnostic theism is the philosophy that encompasses both theism and agnosticism. An agnostic theist is one who disavows knowledge of God's existence but chooses to believe in God in spite of this. Agnostic theism - The position. The validity of the theist's position is debated because believers typically state "God exists" as a fact, implying knowledge of it on their behalf. The agnostic theist however does not state that. Rather he says that he doesn't know whether God exists or not but simply believes in G ...

Agnosticism: Encyclopedia - Agnostic atheism

Agnostic atheism is the philosophy that encompasses both atheism and agnosticism. Due to definitional variance, an agnostic atheist does not believe in God or gods and by extension holds true one or more of these statements: The existence and nonexistence of deities is currently unknown and maybe absolutely unknowable. Knowledge of the existence and nonexistence of deities is irrelevant or unimportant. Abstention from claims of knowledge of the e ...

Agnosticism: Encyclopedia - Gnosticism

Gnosticism is a blanket term for various mystical initiatory religions, sects and knowledge schools, which were most prominent in the first few centuries AD. It is also applied to modern revivals of these groups and, sometimes, by analogy to all religious movements based on secret knowledge gnosis, thus can lead to confusion. The occult nature of gnostic teaching (as seen from a modern viewpoint) and the fact that much of the material relating to the schools comprising Gnosticism has traditionally come from critiques by orthodo ...

Clarence Seward Darrow (April 18, 1857 in Kinsman, Ohio – March 13, 1938 in Chicago, Illinois) was an American lawyer, best known for having defended teenaged thrill killers Leopold and Loeb in their trial for murdering 14 year old Bobby Franks (1924) and defending John T. Agnosticism: Encyclopedia - Nihilism

Nihilism as a philosophical position is the view that the world, and especially human existence, is without meaning, purpose, comprehensible truth, or essential value. Some philosophers are considered nihilists if they hold the philosophical position that either (1) nothing exists (all there is is nothing), (2) the reality we humans experience does not exist at all as we see it, or (3) reality is unknowable, and thus the pursuit of objective understanding is pointless. It is more often a charge leveled against a particular idea ...
