Age: Encyclopedia II - Middle Ages - The Early Middle Ages

As the authority of the Roman Empire dwindled in Western Europe, its territories were entered and settled by succeeding waves of "barbarian" tribal confederations, some of whom distrusted and rejected the classical culture of Rome, while others, like the Goths admired it and considered themselves the legatees and heirs of Rome. Prominent among these peoples in the movement were the Huns and Avars and Magyars with t ...

Age: Encyclopedia II - Viking Age - Technology

The Vikings were equipped with the then technologically superior longships; for purposes of conducting trade, however, another type of ship, the knarr, wider and deeper in draught, were customarily used. The Vikings were competent sailors, adept in land warfare as well as at sea, and they often struck at accessible and poorly-defended targets, usually with near impunity. It is the effectiveness of these tactics that earned them their formidable reputation as raiders and pirates, and the chroniclers paid little attention to other aspects of m ...

Age: Encyclopedia II - New Age - Critiques of the New Age

Major critiques of the New Age have emerged from rational philosophical and scientific views that seek to understand the nature of New Age notions. These often highlight the discrepancies between New Age's seemingly irreconcilable mix of occultism and acceptance of the laws of physics. Rather more extreme views have emerged from evangelical Christians who reject all forms of occultism; from skeptics suspicious of paranormal claims and woolly beliefs in general; and from New Agers themselves. Some, including neo-pagans, who are frequently lab ...

Age: Encyclopedia II - Gilded Age - Immigration

During the Gilded Age millions of immigrants came to the United States for many reasons: religious persecution and bad economies are just examples. Between 1865 and 1890 about 10 million immigrants entered the United States from countries in northwestern Europe. Between 1890 an 1920 the pattern of immigration shifted and more people were coming from south and eastern Europe, about 16 million from these areas during this time. There were many port cities for immigrants to come through, Boston, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and New York. About 70 percent of ...

Age: Encyclopedia II - Age of Pericles - Institutions

Age of Pericles - The magistrates. The magistrates were people who occupied a public post and formed the administration of the Athenian state. They were submitted to a rigorous public control. The magistrates were chosen by lot, using fava beans. Some black and white beans were put in a box and depending on which color the person drew out they obtained the post or not. This was a way of eliminating all personal influence of rich people and possible intrigues and use of favors. There were only two categorie ...

Age: Encyclopedia II - Age of Pericles - Finances

The economical resources of the Athenian State were not excessive. All of the glory of Athens in the Age of Pericles, its constructions, public works, religious buildings, sculptures, etc. would not have been possible without the treasury of the Delian League. Other small incomes came from customs rights and fines. In times of war a special tax was added to the rich citizens. These citizens were also charged permanently with other taxes which benefited the city. This was called the system of liturgy. The taxes were used to maintain the triremes which gave Athens great naval power and also to pay and ma ...

Age of Aquarius - N

Astrologers believe that evolution goes through cycles corresponding to the signs of the zodiac, each lasting from 2,000 to 2,400 years. New Age advocates say we are now moving from the cycle associated with Pisces into the one associated with Aquarius. The Acquarian Age will supposedly be characterized by a heightened degree of spiritual or cosmic consciousness.
