Afraid: Encyclopedia II - Abraham - Abraham and his descendants Biblical Perspective

For a full account of the historicity of Abrahamic stories in the book of Genesis, see Historicity of the Patriarchs. Biblical narratives represent Abraham as a wealthy, powerful and supremely virtuous man, but humanly flawed, and when afraid for himself, miscalculating, and a sometimes deceiver and an inconsiderate husband. But his central importance in the book of Genesis, and his portrait as a man favored by God, is unequivocal. Abraham's generations (Hebrew: toledoth, translated to Greek: "Genesis") are ...

Afraid: Encyclopedia II - Muslim League - Background

Muslim rule was established across northern India between the 7th and the 14th centuries. The Muslim Mughal Empire ruled most of India from Delhi from the early 16th century until its power was broken by the British in the 19th century. This left a disempowered and discontented Muslim minority, afraid of being swamped by the Hindu majority over whom they had previously ruled. Muslims were about 23% of the population of British India, and were the majority of the population in Baluchistan, Bengal, Kashmir, North-West Frontier Province, Punjab an ...

Afraid: Encyclopedia II - Velvet Revolution - Political situation prior to the revolution

Czechoslovakia was ruled by the Communist Party from February 25, 1948. There was no opposition. Dissidents (notably Charter 77) published home-made periodicals (samizdat), but they faced persecution from the secret police, and the general public was afraid to support them. A person could be dismissed from their job or school, or have their books or movies banned for having a "negative attitude to [the] socialist regime." This included: being a child of a former entrepreneur or non-Communist politician, having family members in exile, suppor ...

Afraid: Encyclopedia II - Gary Dotson - Recantation

In 1985, Cathleen Crowell Webb admitted that she had fabricated the rape allegation and self-inflicted the cuts on her stomach because she was afraid that she had become pregnant by her boyfriend. The fabrication was based on a scene from a 1974 novel, Sweet Savage Love. Her lawyer first contacted the Cook County State's Attorneys Office but found the prosecutors unresponsive. Her lawyer next contacted the media. The resulting public sympathy caused a judge to release Dotson on $100,000 bond pending a hearing one week later. At that hearing, ...

Afraid: Encyclopedia II - Drag queen - Opinions

Drag queens are often rejected by parts of the transgender community - especially, but not exclusively, by many transsexual women - because those people are afraid that they might also be stereotyped as drag queens, which they are not. (Canadian transgender activist Star Maris wrote a song entitled "I'm Not A Fucking Drag Queen" to express her feelings on the subject.) Some feminists believe that drag promotes harmful stereotypes of women. Most drag artists would respond that drag is a very specific aesthetic and is not meant to satirize women in general. Many gender theorists se ...

Afraid: Encyclopedia II - Lang Hancock - Politics

Although Lang Hancock never aspired to political office, he held strong political views and was not afraid to to use his position to attempt to influence his state and the nation. In addition to his activities in the 1950s, lobbying against government restrictions on iron ore, Hancock donated considerable sums of money to politicians of many political stripes. His political views aligned most closely with the Liberal and National Parties of Australia, and he was a good friend and strong supporter of Queensland Premier Joh Bjelke-Peter ...

Afraid: Encyclopedia II - Darrell Waltrip - Jaws

An early racer in Kentucky, Waltrip's success led to him moving to Nashville, Tennessee, to race at the Music City Motorplex at the Tennessee State Fairgrounds. There, he would aggressively promote the week's race when he appeared on a local television program promoting the speedway's races, and was not afraid to frequent the show when other competitors refused. Some of the notorious trash-talking on air included making fun of drivers such as Coo Coo Marlin (whose son Sterling, later raced at the circuit and is a two-time Daytona 500 winner) ...

Afraid: Encyclopedia II - Deep Springs College - History

Deep Springs was founded in 1917 by L. L. Nunn, an industrialist who made his fortune building alternating current power plants throughout the western United States. The plants required well-trained engineers who were not afraid of living under rough conditions. After failing to find many men with that combination of qualifications coming from eastern schools Nunn started his own educational program. Nunn later applied his knowledge in education to opening a liberal arts school that evolved into what is now Deep Springs. Nunn also founded the Telluride Association [1] in 1911. The current president ...

"Cardassians have never been afraid of war, in fact we've proven time and again over these past two years. 7 million of our brave soldiers have given their lives to fulfill our part of the agreement, and what has the Dominion done in return? Nothing. We've gained no new territories." "In fact, our influence throughout the Quadrant has diminished. And to make matters worse, we're no longer masters in our own home. Travel anywhere in Cardassia and what do you find? Jem'Hadar, Vorta, and now Breen. Instead of the invaders, we have become the invaded. Our allies have conquered us ...

Afraid: Encyclopedia II - Essays in London and Elsewhere - Critical evaluation

James' ability to understand and appreciate writers very different from himself shines through this book's essays on Ibsen and Loti. He brings to each a deep appreciation of their outlook on life and their harsh but effective techniques for presenting it. James is never afraid to point out what he considers faults or omissions in the writers he discusses. But his criticism is never captious, never a wish that a writer was somebody he is not. The essay on Ibsen has biographical relevance and even poignance for James, who would experien ...

Afraid: Encyclopedia II - Earthling album - Trivia

"I'm Afraid of Americans" first appeared in 1995 on the soundtrack for the movie Showgirls. That version is extremely rough compared to the remake on Earthling. Bowie asked Reeves Gabrels to play a guitar solo for "Looking For Satellites", though Gabrels didn't think it should have one. Bowie insisted, instructing Gabrels to divide the solo into four parts: the first only using the deep E string, the second only using the A string, the third only using the D string, and the fourth only using the G string — and it had to be in consta ...

Roberts is a power forward who plays a strong, physical game and is not afraid to use his body to the fullest. He is even known to drop his gloves from time to time. But his physical style of play caught up to him after several years as he started to experience severe neck pain and numbness in his arm. Chang Wufei is descended from a Chinese clan known as the Dragon Clan. The Dragon Clan was a violent clan that practiced heavily in the martial arts. The Dragon Clan was long ago banished into the rundown colony A0206 by their government, who was afraid of their power. Wufei is a loner and prefers to fight alone. Afraid: Mysticism Magick Dictionary on FAIRY

FAIRY

One of the reasons that "fairy" became a derogatory epithet for homosexual is that ordinary society pretends to pride itself on its own ordinariness and lack of originality and is afraid to confess any interest in the possibility of the extraordinary. Beyond that, the Celtic Irish believe(d) that the "little people" inhabit a beautiful land of "the ever young". These and similar notions led to the natural association of one with the other. Wm. Butler Yeats and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, however, claimed to have incontrovertible evidence in support of the existence of fairies. More recently, Jacques Vallée has advanced the idea that today's ufos are the descendents of yesterday's fairies.
