Addiction: Encyclopedia - Addiction

Addiction is a compulsion to repeat a behavior regardless of its consequences. A person who is addicted is sometimes called an addict. Many drugs (sometimes called hard drugs) or behaviors are seen to precipitate an addiction, or a chronic pattern of behaviour, which includes a craving for more of the drug, or of the initial behavior, increased physiological tolerance to exposure, and withdrawal symptoms in the absence of the stimulus. Most drugs and behaviors that directly provide either pleasure or relief from p ...

Addiction - Physical dependency. Physical dependency on a substance is defined by the appearance of characteristic withdrawal symptoms when the drug is suddenly discontinued. While opioids, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, alcohol and nicotine are all well known for their ability to induce physical dependence, other drugs share this property that are not considered addictive: cortisone, beta-blockers and most antidepressants are examples. So while physical dependency can be a major factor in the psychology of addiction, the primary attribute of an addictive dru ...

Addiction: Encyclopedia II - Methcathinone - Addiction

In preclinical studies, methcathinone hydrochloride produces an abuse potential similar to that of the amphetamines. Methcathinone can be highly psychologically addictive, and can produce methamphetamine-like withdrawals. It is highly unlikely for a methcathinone user to experience addiction on their first or even several subsequent administrations of the drug. In drug discrimination studies, methcathinone hydrochloride evokes responses similar to those induced by both (+)-amphetamine sulphate and cocaine hydrochloride. When ex ...

Addiction: Encyclopedia II - Methamphetamine - Addiction

Methamphetamine is an addictive drug. While withdrawal symptoms are less pronounced than those of alcohol or opiates (such as heroin), they are nonetheless physiological in nature and could include seizures, narcolepsy, and stroke. Furthermore, the mental and social consequences of quitting can be severe and extremely difficult for the addict. As with all addictions, relapse is common. In an article about his son's addiction to methamphetamine, a California writer who has also experimented with the drug put it this way: < ...

Addiction: Overcoming Addictions with Affirmations

Addictions are not formed overnight. An addiction connotes a mental habit of becoming attached to something on which you have become dependent. We commonly think of drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, coffee etc. to be objects of addiction.

However, a habit can be as addictive; be it playing cards, sex, watching TV, gossiping, or anything else that you cannot help but do. If for some reason you are unable to indulge in the habit or activity to which you are addicted, it leads to tremendous discomfort, frustration, anger, or even unbearable physical pain (as in drug addiction).

Addiction: Addictive Love Relationships

There are two fascinating qualities that can enter into our lives or the lives of those we care for at any moment: love and addiction. At first these two may appear to be strange bedfellows: love evokes pleasurable images of couples passionately embracing or tenderly gazing into each others' eyes, while addiction brings up a darker, grim, even desperate image of people struggling against a part of themselves that is out of control. Yet at their core, both have in common a profound spiritual yearning, the desire to transcend the self, to experience powerful states of bliss and ecstasy and to merge with and feel a part of something greater than oneself.

Addiction: Are You Or Your Partner Addicted To Drama?

We are all familiar with chemical addictions to intoxicating substances such as alcohol or cocaine. Sex, work and Internet use are also frequently mentioned as aspects of life that can be used addictively. The least recognized addiction in our society, however, may be the addiction to drama that manifests in so many relationships. While drama is a legitimate category of cinema and theater, as an addictive process in relationships it refers to an ongoing dysfunctional need to continually recreate unsafe and unhealthy emotional intensity in one's relationships.

Addiction: Encyclopedia II - Addiction - Terminology and usage

The medical now makes a careful theoretical distinction between physical dependence (characterized by symptoms of withdrawal) and psychological addiction (or simply addiction). Addiction is now narrowly defined as "uncontrolled, compulsive use despite harm"; if there is no harm being suffered by, or damage done to, the patient or another party, then clinically it may be considered compulsive, but within this narrow definition it is not categorized as "addiction". In practice, however, the two kinds of addiction are not always easy to distinguish. Addictions oft ...

Addiction: Encyclopedia - Computer addiction

Computer addiction is an obsessive addiction to computers. The term was used by M. Shotton in 1989 in her book Computer addiction. It is relatively recent academically, since widespread use of computers by the general public for non-professional purposes only began in the 1990s. However, there are examples of obsessive recreational users dating back to the first time-shared computer games, and many NetNews users were considered obsessive in the 1980s. An extension of this behavior is the theorized Internet addiction disorder, sympto ...

Addiction: Encyclopedia - Addictive 2002 song

"Addictive" is a 2002 single recorded by Truth Hurts for Dr. Dre's Aftermath label. One of the label's few R&B hits, "Addictive" features a guest rap from old school hip hop legend Rakim, and is based around a Hindi music sample, which eventually brought on a $500 million lawsuit against Aftermath. Steve "Static" Garrett wrote the song's lyrics, and the record was produced by DJ Quik. Quik sampled for its instrumental track a Hindi-song he heard on television early one morning. The sample turned out to be "Thoda Resham Lagt ...

Addiction: Encyclopedia - Chocoholic

A chocoholic is one who is or claims to be addicted to chocolate. Chocolate contains theobromines and it may be possible for the brain to become accustomed to chocolate at regular intervals. Etymologically, "chocoholic" derives directly from alcoholic; and while linguists may complain that the word, by construction, implies addiction to "chocohol" rather than "chocolate", suggesting that chocolatic would have made a more appropriate neologism instead, the w ...

Addiction: Encyclopedia - Conspicuous consumption

Conspicuous consumption is a term introduced by the American economist Thorstein Veblen, in The Theory of the Leisure Class (1899). The term is used to describe the consumption of expensive goods, commodities and services for the sake of displaying social status and wealth. The term is generally reserved for those forms of consumption that are motivated by societal factors and is not used to describe impulsive behaviours associated with personality disorders, such as as binge eating or compulsive spending. Addiction: Encyclopedia - Analgesic

An analgesic (colloquially known as painkiller) is any member of the diverse group of drugs used to relieve pain and to achieve analgesia. This derives from Greek an-, "without", and -algia, "pain". Analgesic drugs act in various ways on the peripheral and central nervous system; they include paracetamol (acetaminophen), the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as the salicylates, narcotic drugs such as morphine, synthetic drugs with narcotic properties such as tramadol, and various others. Addiction: Encyclopedia II - Pornography addiction - Overcoming addiction

According to the University of Texas at Dallas Student Counseling Center self-help library page on pornography addiction, "One of the great rewards of overcoming a pornography addiction is the ability to be fully committed to another person in a loving way, having nothing to hide and enjoying great sex" [1]. Many pornography addicts have recounted stories of trying to quit, and then, believing they had overcome the addiction, deciding to sample it one more time. For a true addict, one image can be enough to tri ...

Addiction: Encyclopedia II - Drug addiction - The basis for addiction

Scientists have long accepted that there is a biological basis for drug addiction, though the exact mechanisms responsible are only now being identified. It is believed that addictive substances create dependence in the user by changing the brain's reward functions, located in the mesolimbic dopamine system—the part of the brain that reinforces certain behaviors such as eating, sexual intercourse, exercise, and social interaction. Addictive substances, through various means and to different degrees, cause the synapses of this system to flood with excessive amounts of dopamine, creati ...

Addiction: Encyclopedia II - Pornography addiction - Online pornography addiction

Online pornography addiction is a type of pornography addiction in which the user obtains the pornography through the Internet. Those who believe in the concept of online pornography addiction argue that it is stronger, and more addictive, than ordinary pornography addiction because of the wide availability, increasingly hardcore nature of the content available, and the privacy that viewing online offers. ...

Addiction: Encyclopedia II - Pornography addiction - Diagnosis

Addiction involves aspects of compulsion or obsession: the addict 'cannot' stop (or cannot stay stopped), and suffers ill effects (social, economic, or other) traceable to the addiction. Such individuals do exist; on the other hand, not all users of pornography are addicts, any more than all users of alcohol are alcoholics. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders does not presently provide a formal definition for pornography addiction. Many informal "self-tests" have been written (for example, here), but do not app ...
