 | | | Addiction: Encyclopedia II - Methcathinone - AddictionIn preclinical studies, methcathinone hydrochloride produces an abuse potential similar to that of the amphetamines.
Methcathinone can be highly psychologically addictive, and can produce methamphetamine-like withdrawals. It is highly unlikely for a methcathinone user to experience addiction on their first or even several subsequent administrations of the drug.
In drug discrimination studies, methcathinone hydrochloride evokes responses similar to those induced by both (+)-amphetamine sulphate and cocaine hydrochloride. When ex ...

 | | | Addiction: Encyclopedia II - Methamphetamine - AddictionMethamphetamine is an addictive drug. While withdrawal symptoms are less pronounced than those of alcohol or opiates (such as heroin), they are nonetheless physiological in nature and could include seizures, narcolepsy, and stroke. Furthermore, the mental and social consequences of quitting can be severe and extremely difficult for the addict. As with all addictions, relapse is common.
In an article about his son's addiction to methamphetamine, a California writer who has also experimented with the drug put it this way:

 | | | Addiction: Overcoming Addictions with Affirmations Addictions are not formed overnight. An addiction connotes a mental habit of becoming attached to something on which you have become dependent. We commonly think of drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, coffee etc. to be objects of addiction. However, a habit can be as addictive; be it playing cards, sex, watching TV, gossiping, or anything else that you cannot help but do. If for some reason you are unable to indulge in the habit or activity to which you are addicted, it leads to tremendous discomfort, frustration, anger, or even unbearable physical pain (as in drug addiction). | | | Addiction: Addictive Love RelationshipsThere are two fascinating qualities that can enter into our lives or the lives of those we care for at any moment: love and addiction. At first these two may appear to be strange bedfellows: love evokes pleasurable images of couples passionately embracing or tenderly gazing into each others' eyes, while addiction brings up a darker, grim, even desperate image of people struggling against a part of themselves that is out of control. Yet at their core, both have in common a profound spiritual yearning, the desire to transcend the self, to experience powerful states of bliss and ecstasy and to merge with and feel a part of something greater than oneself. | | | Addiction: Are You Or Your Partner Addicted To Drama? We are all familiar with chemical addictions to intoxicating substances such as alcohol or cocaine. Sex, work and Internet use are also frequently mentioned as aspects of life that can be used addictively. The least recognized addiction in our society, however, may be the addiction to drama that manifests in so many relationships. While drama is a legitimate category of cinema and theater, as an addictive process in relationships it refers to an ongoing dysfunctional need to continually recreate unsafe and unhealthy emotional intensity in one's relationships. | | | Addiction: Encyclopedia II - Addiction - Terminology and usageThe medical now makes a careful theoretical distinction between physical dependence (characterized by symptoms of withdrawal) and psychological addiction (or simply addiction). Addiction is now narrowly defined as "uncontrolled, compulsive use despite harm"; if there is no harm being suffered by, or damage done to, the patient or another party, then clinically it may be considered compulsive, but within this narrow definition it is not categorized as "addiction". In practice, however, the two kinds of addiction are not always easy to distinguish. Addictions oft ...

 | | | Addiction: Encyclopedia II - Pornography addiction - Overcoming addictionAccording to the University of Texas at Dallas Student Counseling Center self-help library page on pornography addiction, "One of the great rewards of overcoming a pornography addiction is the ability to be fully committed to another person in a loving way, having nothing to hide and enjoying great sex" [1]. Many pornography addicts have recounted stories of trying to quit, and then, believing they had overcome the addiction, deciding to sample it one more time. For a true addict, one image can be enough to tri ...

 | | | Addiction: Encyclopedia II - Drug addiction - The basis for addictionScientists have long accepted that there is a biological basis for drug addiction, though the exact mechanisms responsible are only now being identified. It is believed that addictive substances create dependence in the user by changing the brain's reward functions, located in the mesolimbic dopamine system—the part of the brain that reinforces certain behaviors such as eating, sexual intercourse, exercise, and social interaction. Addictive substances, through various means and to different degrees, cause the synapses of this system to flood with excessive amounts of dopamine, creati ...

 | | | Addiction: Encyclopedia II - Pornography addiction - DiagnosisAddiction involves aspects of compulsion or obsession: the addict 'cannot' stop (or cannot stay stopped), and suffers ill effects (social, economic, or other) traceable to the addiction. Such individuals do exist; on the other hand, not all users of pornography are addicts, any more than all users of alcohol are alcoholics.
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders does not presently provide a formal definition for pornography addiction. Many informal "self-tests" have been written (for example, here), but do not app ...
