Adam—אָדָם in Standard Hebrew, ʾĀḏām in Tiberian Hebrew, آدم (ʾĀdam) in Arabic, አዳም ('Adam) in Geez (Ethiopic), and Adamus in Latin — translates literally as red earth. In the ancient cultures of the fertile crescent, people were thought to have been created from the earth itself, and so the term red earth was used to refer to mankind generally. Indeed Adam, in the Kazakh language means human, and Adamshylyk is mankind, and in most other Turkic lang ...

Adamic Earth: Encyclopedia II - Adam-God theory - Contemporary Interpretations

Adam-God theory - Evidence For Adam is God Interpretation. During the life of Brigham Young, however, and for some time later, many devout Latter-day Saints believed and taught that Adam was the father of Jesus Christ. Heber C. Kimball, a member of the First Presidency under Brigham Young, stated that "there is but one God that pertains to this people, and he is the God that pertains to this earth — the first man. That first man sent his own Son to redeem the world..." (4 J.D., p.1). George Q. Cannon, another m ...

Adamic Earth: Encyclopedia II - Adam and Eve - The life of Adam and Eve

Adam and Eve - Adam's creation. Adam is said, in the torah, to have been created from the dust of the earth, and in the Talmud (Tractate Sanhedrin 38b) is, more specifically, described as having initially been a golem (a bit like a zombie slave) kneaded together from mud. The important early Islamic commentator Tabari adds a number of details, based on claimed hadith as well as Jewish traditions (so-called isra'iliyyat). Tabari records that when it came time to create Adam, God sent Gabriel, then Michael, ...

Adamic Earth: Encyclopedia II - Adam Sedgwick - Flawed opinions

Sedgwick's own geological views were generally catastrophic -- he believed that the history of the Earth had been marked by a series of cataclysmic events which had destroyed much of the Earth's life. In this belief he followed Cuvier, and he was opposed to Charles Lyell's models of slow, gradual geological change and a more or less steady-state Earth. However, Sedgwick was interested in the possibility that at least some of the "catastrophic" changes implied by the rock record might be shown to be gradual. He originally followed his colleag ...

Adamic Earth: Encyclopedia II - Young Earth creationism - Young Earth creationism and the Omphalos hypothesis

Young Earth Creationists usually distinguish their own hypotheses from the Omphalos hypothesis put forth by the science writer Philip Henry Gosse (omphalos is Greek for navel). Gosse's hypothesis was an unsuccessful mid-19th century attempt to reconcile creationism with geology. He proposed that just as Adam had a navel, evidence of a gestation he never experienced, so also the Earth was created ex nihilo complete with evidence of a prehistoric past that never actually occurred. Gosse's hypothesis allows for a young Earth witho ...

Adamic Earth: Encyclopedia II - Bible - The canonization of Scripture

In Judaism it is commonly thought that the canonical status of some books was discussed between 200 BC and AD 100, though it is unclear at what point during this period the Jewish canon was decided. Protestants cite the Old Testament canon defined by the Council of Jamnia in AD 90 as their basis for not including the Deuterocanonical books, where Roman Catholics assert that Jewish council was convened in reaction to the ri ...

Adamic Earth: Encyclopedia II - Bible - The Introduction of chapters and verses

; see Tanakh for the Jewish textual tradition. The Hebrew Masoretic text contains verse endings as an important feature. According to the Talmudic tradition, the verse endings are of ancient origin. The Masoretic textual tradition also contains section endings called parashiyot, which are indicated by a space within a line (a "closed" section") or a new line beginning (an "open" section). The division of the text reflected in the parashiyot ...

Adamic Earth: Encyclopedia II - Bible - Bible versions and translations

In scholarly writing, ancient translations are frequently referred to as "versions", with the term "translation" being reserved for medieval or modern translations. Information about Bible versions is given below, while Bible translations can be found on a separate page. The original texts of the Tanakh were in Hebrew, although some portions were in Aramaic. In addition to the authoritative Masoretic Text, Jews still refer to the Septuagint, the translation of much of the Bible into Greek, ...

Adamic Earth: Encyclopedia II - Gap Creationism - Varieties

Many Gap Creationists postulate that this gap occurs between the seventh day, the one of rest, and the account of the Fall of Adam and Eve and hence that of Mankind though the agency of the temptation of Satan in the form of a snake. According to this theory, this amount of time would be sufficient for all of the geologic events which have happened to make the appearance of the Earth to be quite old. Another popular approach is to assume that the gap occurs between Gen 1:1 and Gen 1:2. This postulates that the earth was initially crea ...

Adamic Earth: Encyclopedia II - Mostly Harmless - Title

The title comes from a joke early in the series, when Arthur Dent discovers that the entry for Earth in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy consists, in its entirety, of the single word "Harmless". His friend Ford Prefect, a contributor to the Guide, assures him that the next edition will contain the article on Earth that Ford has spent the last few years researching—somewhat cut due to space restrictions, but still an improvement. The revised article, he eventually ad ...

Adamic Earth: Encyclopedia II - H2G2 - History

h2g2 was founded in April 1999 as the Earth edition of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by the author of the series, Douglas Adams, and his friends and colleagues at The Digital Village. "h2g2" serves as a handy abbreviation for that rather lengthy title, with the advantage that most people are able to spell it. Like many other dot-com companies, Adams's company TDV ran into financial difficulties towards the end of 2000 and eventually ceased operations. In January 2001, the management of the site was taken over by the BBC, ...

Adamic Earth: Encyclopedia II - Carl Everett - Controversies

Everett is an outspoken man, and his remarks have proven controversial on several occasions. Perhaps the best-known of these was his denial of the existence of dinosaurs. He was quoted as saying, "God created the sun, the stars, the heavens and the earth, and then made Adam and Eve. The Bible never says anything about dinosaurs. You can't say there were dinosaurs when you never saw them. Someone actually saw Adam and Eve. No one ever saw a Tyrannosaurus rex." He also derided fossils of dinosaur bones as man-made fakes.
