The 1651 Act banned foreign ships from transporting goods from outside Europe to England, and banned ships from third countries from transporting goods from a country in Europe to England. Acts: Encyclopedia - Witchcraft Act

In England, a succession of Witchcraft Acts have governed witchcraft and provided penalties for its practice. To consider the changes in these laws is to make a chronicle of received ideas about the subject. The first act of Parliament directed specifically against witchcraft was the act De hæretico comburendo, passed at the instigation of Archbishop Thomas Arundel in 1401. It specifically named witchcraft — sortilegium — "sorcery", or "divination", as a species of heresy, and provided that unless the accused ...

Acts: Encyclopedia - Acts of Paul

The Acts of Paul is one of the major works from the New Testament apocrypha, and thought to have been written at the end of the second century. The Acts were considered orthodox by Hippolytus, but were eventually regarded as heretical when the Manichaeans started using the texts. The discovery of a Coptic version of the text, demonstrated that the Acts of Paul and Thecla, Epistle of the Corinthians to Paul, Third Epistle to the Corinthians, and story of the Martyrdom of Paul, are actually constituent parts ...

Acts: Encyclopedia - Black Act

The Black Act (9 Geo. 1 c. 22), was instituted in 1723 by King George I of Great Britain in response to the Waltham deer poachers. It made it a felony (that is, a hanging offence) to appear armed in a park or warren, or to hunt or steal deer, with the face blackened or disguised. The Act was later amended to deal with protestors outside the royal forests and chases, becoming a brutal adjunct to the Riot Act of 1715. The Black Act was repealed in 1827. Subsequent acts inflicting heavy penalties for malicious injuries to livestock ...

Acts: Encyclopedia - Act of Parliament

In Westminster System parliaments, an Act of Parliament is a part of the law passed by the Parliament. It can also be a private bill. It usually starts as a draft proposal, known as a White Paper. A Bill is then introduced into the House of Commons or House of Representatives or the House of Lords or Senate. By constitutional convention, Bills which contain significant provisions relating to taxation or public expenditure start in the House of Commons; in Canada and Ireland, this is the law. In the UK, Law Commission bills and consoli ...

Acts: Encyclopedia - Act of Proscription

On August 1, 1746 the Act of Proscription (19 Geo. 2, c. 39) came into effect in Scotland. This was part of a series of efforts to assimilate the unruly Scottish Highlands while ending their ability to revolt, and the first of the 'King's laws' which sought to crush the Clan system in the aftermath of the Jacobite Rising of 'Forty-Five. These laws were finally repealed in 1782. The British forces under the Duke of Cumberland had been brutal in putting down any hint of Jacobite resistance among Highlanders, and the Act can be seen as Parliament asserting the supremacy of ...

Acts: Encyclopedia - Acts of Thomas

The early 3rd century text called Acts of Thomas is arguably the most Gnostic of the New Testament apocrypha, portraying Christ as the "Heavenly Redeemer", independent of and beyond creation, who can free souls from the darkness of the world. References to the work by Epiphanius show that it was in circulation in the 4th century. The complete versions that survive are Syriac and Greek. There are many surviving fragments of the text. Scholars detect from the Greek that its original was written in Syriac, which places the Acts ...

Acts: Encyclopedia - Acts of Pilate

The Acts of Pilate (Latin Acta Pilati) which formed the nucleus of the medieval Gospel of Nicodemus, is a book of the New Testament apocrypha. The oldest sections of the book appear first in Greek. There are multiple parts to it, which are uneven in style and would seem to be by different hands, but the oldest section probably dates to the fourth century (see below). An appended text purports to be a written report made by Pontius Pilate to Claudius, containing a description of the crucifixion ...

Acts: Encyclopedia - Acts of Andrew

The Acts of Andrew (a New Testament apocrypha) in the surviving version is probably a 3rd century work, according to M.R. James (1924) and Jean-Marc Prieur in The Anchor Bible Dictionary (vol. 1, p. 246), but it shows signs of a mid-2nd century origin. Prieur stated that "The distinctive christology of the text", its silence concerning Jesus as a genuinely historical figure, and its lack of mention of church organisation, liturgy, and ecclesiastic ...

Acts: Encyclopedia - Acts of John

The Acts of John is a 2nd-century Christian collection of narratives and traditions, well described as a "library of materials" [1], inspired by the Gospel of John, long known in fragmentary form. The traditional author was said to be one Leucius Charinus, a companion of John, who was associated with several 2nd century Acts. As a description of acts attributed to one of the major apostles who had put their words down into the New Testament, together with the Acts of Paul it is considered one of the most significant of ...

Acts: Encyclopedia - Acts of Peter

One of the earliest of the apocryphal acts of the apostles, the Acts of Peter reports a miracle contest between Simon Magus and the apostle Peter in Rome. The majority of the text has survived only in the Latin translation of the Vercelli manuscript. The Acts of Peter was originally composed in Greek during the second half of the 2d century, probably in Asia Minor. Consensus amongst academics points to it being based on the Acts of John, and traditionally both that and this work were said to be written by Leucius Charinus, whom Ep ...

The Acts of the Apostles (Greek Praxeis Apostolon) is a book of the Bible, which now stands fifth in the New Testament. It is commonly referred to as simply Acts. Acts: Encyclopedia - Acts of Peter and Paul

The Acts of Peter and Paul is a late text from the New Testament apocrypha, thought to date from after the 4th century. An alternate version with variences in the introductory part of the text exists named the Passion of Peter and Paul. The text is framed as the tale of Paul's journey from the island of Guadomelete to Rome, assigning Peter as Paul's brother. It also describes the death of Paul by beheading, an early church tradition. The text also contains a letter purporting to be from Pilate. The work appears to have been based on the Acts of Peter, with the ...
