acolytes: Encyclopedia - Bene Gesserit

The Bene Gesserit (from Latin: see the origin of the name) are a key social, religious and political force in Frank Herbert's science fiction universe of Dune. They are a secretive sisterhood who train their bodies and minds through years of physical and mental conditioning, attaining powers and abilities that can seem almost magical. Due to their secretive nature and misunderstood abilities, outsiders often call them witches. Trained at the Mother School on Wallach IX, and later headquartered at the hidden world known a ...

acolytes: Encyclopedia - Alessandro Valignano

Alessandro Valignano, (Chinese: 范禮安 Fan Li'an) born in 1539 in Chieti, kingdom of Naples, was an Italian Jesuit missionary who helped supervise the introduction of Catholicism to the Far East, and especially to Japan. He joined the Society of Jesus in 1566 and was sent to the Far East in 1573. The nomination of an Italian to supervise Portugal-dominated Asia was at the time quite controversial, and his nationality, as well as his adaptationist and expansionist policies, led to many conflicts with mission personnel. acolytes: Encyclopedia - Catholic minister

Unlike in several Protestant churches, in the Roman Catholic Church the term minister is not commonly used to refer to a member of the clergy nor as a common term of address. In some parishes of the Catholic church in the United States there are ministers of hospitality, music ministers, etc. There are also lectors who read scriptural passages to the congregation, altar servers and acolytes who assist the clergy at the altar, cantors who lead the singing, and ushers who direct the seating and procession of ...

acolytes: Encyclopedia II - Sandworm Dune - Melange and sandworm exploitation by humans

Following its discovery, the cinnamon-scented melange became a commodity of central importance to the universe due to its rarity and numerous remarkable properties. The most common of these properties is that it serves as a geriatric narcotic — a drug capable of extending human life well beyond its natural limits. This comes at the cost of great addiction and the denial of spice to an addict can only result in death. Spice addicts are easy to spot by their blue-in-blue eyes a ...

acolytes: Encyclopedia II - Acolyte Protection Agency - The Acolyte Protection Agency

On January 31, 2000 the Mean Street Posse asked the Acolytes to protect them from The Radicalz, offering to pay them. This gave Bradshaw the idea of charging for protection, and the Agency was born. The A.P.A were nominally a face team, but would protect heels if the price was right. One one occasion Crash Holly paid the A.P.A to protect him while he slept; the A.P.A neglected their duties, and Gerald Brisco was able to pin Crash, winning the Hardcore Championship. The tag team were notable for their series of backstage vignettes, usu ...

acolytes: Encyclopedia II - First Council of Nicaea - The Nicene Creed symbol

By and large, many creeds were acceptable to the members of the council. From his perspective, even Arius could cite such a creed. For Bishop Alexander and others, however, greater clarity was required. Some distinctive elements in the Nicene Creed, perhaps from the hand of Hosius of Cordova, were added. Jesus Christ is described as "God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God." Jesus Christ is said to be "begotten, not made." Finally, he is said to be "from the substance of the Father." No follo ...

acolytes: Encyclopedia II - Padstow - Transport

Between 1899 and 1967 the Bodmin-Wadebridge railway extended to Padstow. The old railway line is now the Camel Trail [2], a footpath and cycle path popular due to its picturesque route beside the River Camel. On the other side of the river, a ferry runs between Padstow and Rock. During the mid-nineteenth century, ships carrying timber from Canada (particularly Quebec) would arrive at Padstow and offer cheap travel to passengers wishing to emigrate. Shipbuilders in the area would also benefit from the quality of their cargoes. Among the ships that sailed were the barques Clio, Belle [3] and Voluna; and the brig ...

acolytes: Encyclopedia II - Gallican rite - The Mass

The chief authorities for the Gallican Mass are the letters of St. Germanus of Paris (555-576); and by a comparison of these with the extant Sacramentaries, not only of Gaul but of the Celtic Rite, with the Irish tracts on the Mass, with the books of the still existing Mozarabic Rite, and with the descriptions of the Spanish Mass given by St. Isidore, one may arrive at a fairly clear general idea of the service, though there exists no Gallican Ordinary of the Mass and no Antiphoner. Mgr. Duchesne, in his "Origines du Cult chrétien", has giv ...

acolytes: Encyclopedia II - Alessandro Valignano - Valignano's methods in Japan

He made the first visit to Japan from 1579-82 and formed a basic strategy for Catholic proselytism in Japan, which is usually called adaptationism. He put the advance of Jesuits' influence above adherence to Christian principles. He attempted to avoid cultural frictions by making a compromise with Japanese customs that conflicted with Catholic values. His strategy was in contrast to those of mendicant orders including Franciscans and ...

The ceremonies begin when the Master of Ceremonies rings the bell. The porter opens the sacristy door and the servers and ministers leave the sacristy and enter the church in the following manner: first the thurifer carrying his thurible and boat (or the aspersorium is the Asperges is to be had); next come the acolytes carrying their candles (the custom in Northern European and English-speaking countries is to have a crucifer holding a processional cross walking between the acolytes); the Master of Ceremonies comes next, finally the three sa ...

acolytes: Encyclopedia II - Solemn Mass - Vestments

For a complete description, see the article entitled Vestments of the Mass. In the sacristy, before vesting, all three sacred ministers (priest celebrant, deacon, and subdeacon) wash their hands. The subdeacon and deacon arrive a bit earlier than the celebrant so that they may be vested and ready to help the celebrant when he arrives in the sacristy. While the deacon and sub-deacon vest, the first and second acolytes, respectively, help them. All the while, the sacred ministers recite certain prayers while they place on each new piece ...

The typical music of Solemn Mass is Gregorian chant, however, a wide variety of musical settings to the Ordinary of the Mass have been composed over the last six hundred years and any of them may be used in stead. acolytes: Encyclopedia II - Gallican rite - The Divine Office

There is curiously little information on this point, and it is not possible to reconstruct the Gallican Divine Office from the scanty allusions that exist. It seems probable that there was considerable diversity in various times and places, through councils, both in France and Spain, tried to bring about some uniformity. The principle authorities are the Councils of Agde (506) and Tours (567), and allusions in the writings of St. Gregory of Tours and St. Caesarius of Arles. These and other details have been gathered together by Mabillon in h ...

acolytes: Encyclopedia II - Solemn Mass - Definition

Solemn Mass is the term traditionally used in America for the form of the Tridentine Mass celebrated a priest with a deacon and a subdeacon. The roles of the latter two are often supplied by two priests. In the rest of the English-speaking world, the term used for this is High Mass. In Latin, the term corresponding to English High Mass is Missa solemnis. Accordingly, Solemn Mass, a literal translation of the Latin term, is used for it by those in the United States who apply the te ...

acolytes: Encyclopedia II - Sandworm Dune - Sandworms and the Spice Melange

As metabolic byproducts, sandworms produce three notable substances: oxygen, which is expelled from their trailing body, replacing the need for photosynthesizing plants on Arrakis; sand from the constant consumption and excretion of rock; and the extremely valuable spice melange, which is released along with water as a waste product of sandtrout. It is from the production of melange that sandworms receive their title of "Maker," but it is unclear whether or not sandworms actually generate the melange or if the process is limited to sandtrout ...
