branches of BuddhismBuddhism Schools: The three main
branches of Buddhism
Buddhism has evolved into myriad schools
that can be roughly grouped into three types: Nikaya, Mahayana, and Vajrayana.
Of the Nikaya schools, only the Theravada survives. Each branch sees itself as
representing a true, original teachings of the Buddha, and some schools believe
that the dialectic nature of Buddhism allows its format, terminology, and
techniques to adapt over time in response to changing circumstances, thus
validating dharmic approaches different from their own.

The Buddhist canon of scripture is known in Sanskrit as the Tripitaka and in Pali as the Tipitaka. These terms literally mean "three baskets" and refers to the
three main divisions of the canon, which are:
1. The Vinaya Piaaka, containing disciplinary rules for the Sangha of Buddhist monks and nuns, as well as a range
of other texts which explain why and how rules were instituted, supporting
material, and doctrinal clarification.
2. The Sutta Pitaka (Pali; Sanskrit: Sutra Pitaka), containing discourses
of the Buddha.
3. The Abhidhamma or commentary Pitaka, containing a philosophical systematization of the
Buddha's teaching, including a detailed analysis of Buddhist psychology.

| | | | Accepted Dictionary: Reflections on
SpiritualityWhen I was growing up, I thought that
"spirituality" was the same thing as "religion," which was
something for which I had little respect. My early experiences with organized
religion left me convinced that the church was a body of contradictions, from
which you would never get a rational, straight answer. I was quite mystified
that so many people would go to church every Sunday to engage in something that
seemed so irrelevant.

Relating To Others: Mirror, Mirror on the WallThe
insights we attain come through the heart. Perhaps the intellect can be a
vehicle for enlightenment, but for me and millions of others, the pathway
through the heart is the most healing and beautiful way to learn and grow.
Relationships with friends and family are filled with learning opportunities.
They come in many forms, and could be intellectually discussed for many hours,
though there is only one true lesson to learn. We learn to give service
unselfishly to our partners or friends and others who may knock on our doors.

| | | | | | | Accepted Dictionary: Body-Mind Integration in the Personal Growth ProcessBody-Mind Integration in the Personal Growth Process
Does the matter mind? I mean, does the mind
matter? That is, what's the matter with the "mind over matter"
attitude, and what's the matter if matter (the body) doesn't mind? Okay, I'll
put the questions a little less pun-like and paradoxical. How often does it
seem that our body is just something for our mind to use to achieve certain
ends? And from the way the body minds at times, do we too often lack confidence
that it's really going to cooperate with our plans? Or, even though we may try
to "listen to our body," does it still surprise us when the massage
therapist finds knots, "rubber bands," and sticky layers of achiness
in areas we thought minded us the most?

| | | | Accepted Dictionary: Finding GodÓI knew I was being transformed
that morning to hear a new song, to listen to a new melody that could not be
heard with ears, but with the heart. Something about the air around me was
different than the air of the day before, as if the room itself had been
transported to a place in the heavens in a new world free from the limits of
our mortal minds. I was in a place where the soul was free to travel at will,
where thought was not bound with words or unknown feelings held captive by the
rigidity of a spoken language.Ó
