The film was based on Murray Burnett and Joan Alison's unproduced play Everybody Comes to Rick's. The story analyst at Warner Brothers who read the play called it (approvingly) "sophisticated hokum", and it was agreed to buy the rights for $20,000. The project was renamed Casablanca, apparently in imitation of the 1938 hit Algiers. Shooting began on May 25, 1942 and was completed on August 3. The entire film was shot in the studio, except for the sequence showing the arrival of Major Strasser (filmed at Van Nuys Airport) ...

Academy Award for Film Editing: Encyclopedia II - American Beauty 1999 film - Themes

People like Lester or people leading to his state can be seen all around and within us, at least in parts. When Lester says "I want a job with the least amount of responsibility", while applying for a counter job at a Burger joint, he epitomises a person who is thoroughly frustrated and not grown up enough to take advice regarding assuming ...

Academy Award for Film Editing: Encyclopedia II - The Bridge on the River Kwai - Fiction versus fact

Although the suffering caused by the building of the Burma Railway and its bridges is true, the incidents in the film are entirely fictional. The real senior Allied officer at the bridge was Lieutenant-Colonel Philip Toosey, who was a remarkable officer. The film is thought by many to be an insulting parody of a great man. Former prisoners have said that it is unlikely that a man like the fictional Nicholson could have risen to the rank of lieutenant-colonel. If he had, they said that he ...
