Abraham Pais: Encyclopedia - Abraham Pais

Abraham Pais (May 19, 1918 - August 4, 2000) was a Dutch-born physicist. In 1946, Pais served as a personal assistant to Niels Bohr at the Bohr's country home in Tisvilde. In 1956, he became a naturalized citizen of the United States. His autobiography A Tale of Two Continents (Princeton, 1997) refers to the 'esemplastic power of the imagination'. Pais was perhaps best known for his biography of Albert Einstein, Subtle is the Lord (Oxford, ...

Abraham Pais: Encyclopedia - Maslow's hierarchy of needs

Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a theory in psychology that Abraham Maslow proposed in his 1943 paper A Theory of Human Motivation, which he subsequently extended. His theory contends that as humans meet 'basic needs', they seek to satisfy successively 'higher needs' that occupy a set hierarchy. Maslow studied exemplary people such as Albert Einstein, Jane Addams, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Frederick Douglass rather than mentally ill or neurotic people, writing that "the study of crippled, stunted, immature, and unhealthy specimens can yield only a cripple psychology an ...

Abraham Pais: Encyclopedia - Perception

In psychology and the cognitive sciences, perception is the process of acquiring, interpreting, selecting, and organizing sensory information. Methods of studying perception range from essentially biological or physiological approaches, through psychological approaches to the often abstract 'thought-experiments' of mental philosophy. Perception - History of the study of perception. Perception is one of the oldest fields within scientific psychology, and there are correspondingly many t ...

Abraham Pais: Encyclopedia II - Kaon - CP violation in neutral meson oscillations

Initially it was thought that although parity was violated, CP symmetry was conserved (by kaons and everything else). In order to understand the discovery of CP violation, it is necessary to understand the mixing of neutral kaons; this phenomenon does not require CP violation, but it is the context in which CP violation was first observed. Kaon - Neutral kaon mixing. Since neutral kaons carry strangeness, they cannot be their own antiparticles. There must be then two different neutral kaons, differing by t ...

Abraham Pais: Encyclopedia II - Historiography of science - The Hessen thesis and the birth of externalism

Just as the 1930s were a seminal decade for the development of our modern understanding of science, they were a seminal decade for the history and historiography of science as well. While Sarton taught the first American doctoral students in the discipline, in Europe some of the most influential historians and philosophers of science were first coming into the picture, and the setting of the philosophical battle which is now known as "the Science Wars" was being set. In 1931, the Second International Congress of the History of Science ...

Abraham Pais: Encyclopedia II - Maslow's hierarchy of needs - Being needs

Though the deficiency needs may be seen as "basic", and can be met and neutralized (i.e. they stop being motivators in one's life), self-actualization and transcendence are "being" or "growth needs" (also termed "B-needs"), i.e. they are enduring motivations or drivers of behaviour. Self-actualization (a term originated by Kurt Goldstein) is the instinctual need of a human to make the most of their unique abilities. Maslow described it as follows: Self Actualization is the intrinsic growth of what is alread ...

Abraham Pais: Encyclopedia II - Perception - Perception and reality

Many cognitive psychologists hold that, as we move about in the world, we create a model of how the world works. That is, we sense the objective world, but our sensations map to percepts, and these percepts are provisional, in the same sense that scientific hypotheses are provisional (cf. in the scientific method). As we acquire new information, our percepts shift. Abraham Pais' biography refers to the 'esemplastic' nature of imagination. In the case of visual perception, some people can actually see the percept shift in their mind's eye. Ot ...

Abraham Pais: Encyclopedia II - Niels Bohr - Relationship with Heisenberg

Werner Heisenberg claimed in an interview after the war, when the author Robert Jungk was working on the book Brighter Than a Thousand Suns, that he had tried to establish a pact with Bohr such that scientists on neither side should help develop the atomic bomb. He also said that the German attempts were entirely focused on energy production, and that his circle of colleagues tried to keep it that way. Heisenberg nuanced his claims, though, and avoided implication that he and his colleagues had purposely sabotaged the bomb effort. How ...

Abraham Pais: Encyclopedia II - Niels Bohr - Trivia

On The Simpsons episode "Angry Dad," when "When Dinosaurs Get Drunk" was cancelled, it was replaced by "The Boring World of Niels Bohr" much to Homer's discontent. Bohr is often referred to in American pop culture amongst young physics students as "The Jewish Lucullus" the origins of which are not understood. This is not considered to be any kind of slur against his ethnicity or religion but is understood as a type of rallying cry which is often condoned. It is thought that he is considered amongst some as a man "Who faced God" referring both to his spars with Einstein and hi ...

The discovery of hadrons with the internal quantum number "strangeness" marks the beginning of a most exciting epoch in particle physics that even now, fifty years later, has not yet found its conclusion ... by and large experiments have driven the development, and that major discoveries came unexpectedly or even against expectations expressed by theorists.  —  I.I.
