Hartlepool was founded as a village in the 7th century AD, springing up around a convent founded in 640 on a headland overlooking a natural harbour. The convent became famous under St Hilda, who served as its abbess from 649-657, but it was destroyed by the Vikings in 800. During the Middle Ages the village grew into an important (though still small) town, gaining a market and walls, and its harbour was improved to serve as the official port of the County palatine of Durham. Vaisakha (Sanskrit) "A celebrated female ascetic, born at Sravasti, and called sudatta, 'virtuous donor.' She was the mother-abbess of a Vihara, or convent of female Upasikas [students], and is known as the builder of a Vihara for Sakyamuni Buddha. She is regarded as the patroness of all the Buddhist female ascetics" (TG 359).

Nuns. There were nuns in ancient Egypt as well as in Peru and old Pagan Rome. They were the "virgin brides" of their respective (Solar) gods. Says Herodotus, "The brides of Ammon are excluded from all intercourse with men", they are "the brides of Heaven"; and virtually they became dead to the world, just as they are now. In Peru they were "Pure Virgins of the Sun", and the Pallakists of Ammon-Ra are referred to in some inscriptions as the "divine spouses". "The sister of Oun-nefer, the chief prophet of Osiris, during the reign of Rameses II.," is described as "Taia, Lady Abbess of Nuns" (Mariett e Bey).

Saint Brigid of Ireland (Bridget, Bridgit, Brigit, Bride) (451- 525) was born at Faughart near Dundalk, County Louth, Ireland. According to her hagiography, her parents were Dubhthach, pagan king of Leinster, and Brocca, a Christian Pictish slave who had been baptized by Saint Patrick.
