Abbess: Encyclopedia II - Hartlepool - History

Hartlepool was founded as a village in the 7th century AD, springing up around a convent founded in 640 on a headland overlooking a natural harbour. The convent became famous under St Hilda, who served as its abbess from 649-657, but it was destroyed by the Vikings in 800. During the Middle Ages the village grew into an important (though still small) town, gaining a market and walls, and its harbour was improved to serve as the official port of the County palatine of Durham. Its harbour made it a convenient outlet for the coalfields o ...

Abbess: Encyclopedia II - Marguerite De Launay Baronne Staal - Life

She was born in Paris. Her father was a painter named Cordier. He seems to have deserted her mother, who then resumed her maiden name, Delaunay, which was also adopted by her daughter. She was educated at a convent at Evreux, of which Mme de la Rochefoucauld, sister of François de la Rochefoucauld, author of the Maximes, was superior. Here she became attached to Mme de Grieu, who, being appointed abbess of ...

Abbess: Encyclopedia II - Much Wenlock Priory - Early History

Merewalh, King of the Magonsaete founded the original Anglo-Saxon monastery here circa 680 and Merewalh's daughter quickly became its abbess. She was later canonised. After her death circa 727 little is historically known of the monastry until the Norman Conquest. But the priory was inhabited by monks until after the Norman conquest. Following the reformation of the monastery, in the early fourteenth century, the priory church was lavishly and completely rebuilt. Considerable remains are left of the 350ft long church, ...

Abbess: Encyclopedia II - Hildegard of Bingen - Significance

Hildegard was a powerful woman for the Middle Ages. She communicated with Popes such as Eugenius III, Anastasius IV, statesmen such as Abbot Suger, German emperors such as Frederick I Barbarossa, and on one occasion with St. Bernard of Clairvaux who although he reportedly advanced her work at the Synod of Trier 1147/48, seemed to have little regard for her as evidenced from the one letter from him she received. Nevertheless many Abbots and Abbesses asked her for prayers and opinions on various matters. She traveled widely, givin ...

Abbess: Encyclopedia II - Melisende of Jerusalem - Patroness of the church and arts

Melisende enjoyed the support of the church throughout her lifetime; from her appointment as Baldwin II's successor, throughout the conflict with Fulk, and later when Baldwin III would come of age. In 1138 she founded the large convent of St. Lazarus in Bethany where her younger sister Ioveta would rule as abbess. In keeping with a royal abbey, Melisende granted the convent the fertile plains of Jericho. Additionally, the queen supplied rich furnishings and liturgical vessels, so that it would not be in any way inferior to religious houses f ...

Abbess: Encyclopedia II - Melisende of Jerusalem - Death

In 1161 Melisende had what appears to be a stroke. Her memory was severely impaired and she could no longer take part in state affairs. Her sisters, the countess of Tripoli and abbess of Bethany, came to nurse her before she died on September 11, 1161. Melisende was buried next to her mother Morphia in the shrine of Our Lady of Josaphat. Melisende, like her mother, bequeathed property to the Orthodox monastery of Saint S'eba. William of Tyre, writing on Melisende's 30-year reign, wrote that "she was a very wise woman, fully experience ...

Abbess: Encyclopedia II - Ng Mui - Ng Mui in the traditions of Wing Chun

According to the Wing Chun master Yip Man, Ng Mui was Abbess at the Henan Shaolin Monastery and managed to survive its destruction by Qing forces during the reign of the Kangxi Emperor (1662–1722). She fled to the White Crane Temple, which this account locates in the distant Daliang mountains on the border between Yunnan and Sichuan, where she met a girl of fifteen named Yim Wing-Chun whom a local bandit was trying to force into marriage. Abbess: Spiritual Theosophical Dictionary on Nuns

Nuns. There were nuns in ancient Egypt as well as in Peru and old Pagan Rome. They were the "virgin brides" of their respective (Solar) gods. Says Herodotus, "The brides of Ammon are excluded from all intercourse with men", they are "the brides of Heaven"; and virtually they became dead to the world, just as they are now. In Peru they were "Pure Virgins of the Sun", and the Pallakists of Ammon-Ra are referred to in some inscriptions as the "divine spouses". "The sister of Oun-nefer, the chief prophet of Osiris, during the reign of Rameses II.," is described as "Taia, Lady Abbess of Nuns" (Mariett e Bey).
