A Shot in the Dark: Encyclopedia II - A Shot in the Dark - Characters

Inspector Jacques Clouseau (Peter Sellers) Clouseau is the bumbling detective of the Pink Panther films, with a stereotypical French accent and an incredibly clumsy manner. Clouseau constantly causes his bosses pain, and in one case, drives one particular superior insane several times throughout the course of the films. Commissioner Charles Dreyfus (Herbert Lom) Dreyfus is Clouseau's boss, first seen in A Shot in the Dark. He slowly goes mad throughout the film, leading to the end, where he repeatedly attem ...

A Shot in the Dark: Encyclopedia II - Trail of the Pink Panther - Plot

The story involves Clouseau being called in to investigate the latest theft of the Pink Panther diamond. Sellers' appearances in the first half of the film seem mostly to be taken from deleted scenes shot for The Pink Panther Strikes Again. In one scene Clouseau is heavily bandaged, making it impossible to tell if he is actually played by Sellers, while some other scenes include dialogue that is clearly dubbed (badly) by another actor. En route Clouseau disappears, and Marie Jouvet (Joanna Lumley), a journalist investigating hi ...

A Shot in the Dark: Encyclopedia II - George Sanders actor - Film

He made his British film debut in 1934 and after a series of British films made his American debut in 1936 with a role in Lloyd's of London. His British accent and sensibilities, combined with his suave, snobbish and somewhat menacing air was utilised in American films during the next decade. He played memorable supporting roles in prestige productions such as Rebecca, in which he goaded the sinister Judith Anderson as Mrs Danvers, in her persecution against Joan Fontaine and he played leading roles in lesser pictures such as Rage in Heaven. During this time he was also the lead in both The ...

A Shot in the Dark: Encyclopedia II - Pink Panther - Films

The films initially starred Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau and were directed by Blake Edwards. The popular theme music is by Henry Mancini. The Pink Panther of the title is a diamond supposedly containing a flaw which forms the image of a pink panther. The plot of the first film centers around its theft. There is a persistent rumor that his birth name was Matuschanskayasky [1], which is false, as are the rumors that his name was Matashansky or Matansky, or any of the other reported names. In truth– as reported by the authors of Matthau: A Life, Rob Edelman and Audrey Kupferberg–along with Walter's son, Charles Matthau–Walter was a teller of tall tales. In his youth, he found the joy of embellishment lifted a story (and the listener) to such enjoyable heights, that he could not resist trying to pass off the most bogus of information, just t ...

A Shot in the Dark: Encyclopedia II - Peter Sellers - Biography

Sellers was born in Southsea, Hampshire, England, to a family of entertainers. He attended a Catholic school, although his father was Protestant and his mother was Jewish. Probably following his family in the variety circuit, Sellers learnt this popular yet difficult art and the immediate instinct of the "gag". He was an incredibly versatile artist: an excellent dancer, a drummer good enough to tour with several jazz bands, and a skillful player of the ukulele and banjo (family legend has it that Seller's father actually taught George Formby to play the ukelele). He is known ...

A Shot in the Dark: Encyclopedia II - Peter Sellers - Premature death and legacy

Sellers died in London from a heart attack on July 24, 1980, aged 54. He was survived by his fourth wife, the English actress Lynne Frederick. He had already suffered a near-fatal heart attack in 1964 at the age of 39. At the time of his death, he was due to undergo heart surgery. He was cremated. His premature death was perhaps hastened by his belief in "alternative medicine," including psychic surgery. In his will, Sellers explicitly requested that Glenn Miller's song In The Mood be played for his funeral. The request is considered his last ...
